The Week in Pictures: Feb. 2 - 9

Protest fire in Cairo, a "Soul Train" salute in New York, a  tie-and-jacket tussle in Turkey, a police strike in northeastern Brazil and more.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady leaves the field after their loss to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis, Ind. on Feb. 5, 2012.

There were a lot of “almost in” pictures during this week's edit. An “almost in” is a picture that an editor sort of likes, but isn’t passionate about or can’t convince the other editors of its worthiness.

My “almost-in” this week is the picture of Tom Brady leaving the field after his team’s Super Bowl loss. The picture is well composed, and I like the way Gary Hershorn captured Brady turning away from the celebration. It’s a story-telling picture.

TGIF Everyone at MSNBCnews.com. Which means time for TWIP.

Since I cannot vote for who wins The Oscar's, The Emmy's, The Golden Globe's, Screen Actor'ss Guild, or The Pulitzer, but I can vote on TWIP, I have cast my ballot for the winner of this weeks installment of outstanding photos.

I went for The Hunkered Down Russian lady who looks to be weary of wearing about 50 pounds of clothing while hawking cigarettes. I chose her, because of the inescapable weather. So far reaching, and powerful that no one can prevent it. The weather simply happens. In this case many people died due to the sub-zero temps. One can avoid a riot, perhaps ride out an earthquake, get missed by a tornado, but a huge freezing air mass is hard to get away from for most ordinary people. And it continues, on and on, and on.

She is so weary, I hope she makes it through and frames the photo. Ribbit.
