Miguel Paludo of Brazil, goes airborne after a crash during the NASCAR Camping World Truck series 250 auto race on Friday night.

AP reports: Paludo was running third when he just lost control of his truck. He turned left and slammed into the inside retaining wall head on — a violent crash that caused his truck to spin like an out-of-control helicopter. All four tires left the ground and the engine caught fire before Paludo eventually came to a stop.

He climbed out a few seconds later and was unharmed.

"It was a hard hit for sure," Paludo said. "I lost my breath."

SB Nation reports:

NASCAR drivers have now gone headfirst into the inside retaining wall at Daytona International Speedway on consecutive days.

Fortunately, thanks entirely to the innovative SAFER barrier, both Danica Patrick on Thursday and Miguel Paludo in tonight's Camping World Truck Series race walked away unhurt.

lol, Danica Patrick. Surprised you folks still have the gumption to put her in a racecar. She is an F1 legend.... NASCAR, not so much. Yeah I'm drunk, sue me. Took me like 30 minutes to type this crap correctly.

Danica has never set foot or butt in a F-1 car, she drive in the INDYCAR Series, which has NOTHING to do with that Bernie Eccelstones private circus known as F-1 .

But I'll give you a break because your hammered & it IS friday night after all !!

Sounds to me like there are too many yuppie snobs commenting here. Danica will do great in NASCAR! I am glad to see another brave woman challenge the macho men. I hope they enjoy eating crow! Maybe with a little ketchup to help the crow go down. No, I would rather have them choke! Go Danica!

How many dozens of lives has Tony George's "Safer Barrier" saved since it was mandated ?

Of al the safety features instigated in the last 50 years of motorsports this one has done the most .

BTW- Thanks Mister Fids for the mention of all the innovations that USAC/CART/IRL/INDYCAR and the Hulman/George family have brought to racing over the years.

Funny but maybe it's time SMASHCAR drivers learn how to drive. Maybe if they made them drive with a weed-eater motor in their cars/trucks they could keep it on the track. Naaaaaaa!!!

Or maybe better yet old Jimmy Snotjob shuts his stupid mouth about other racing "INDYCAR" and talk about WHY SMASHCAR can't seem to get through a race without destroying 15-20 cars.

Or maybe better yet they should mandate SMASHCAR only be able to run road courses since the cars and drivers can't handle driving on high banked ovals. Thank goodness they can't go over 200mph or it would be mayhem, death and destruction at every track every week.

      What do you think Jimmy?

      cmp,

Totally obvious you bring some sort of ignorant anti-NASCAR agenda to your comment. Why in just the one race last Saturday, Kyle Busch demonstrated better driving techniques than any Indy-car driver ever has, including Danny Sullivan's "spin and win" back in '85.

Oh, and which series is, and has been these past 20 years, the most viable?

Do we detect a tad bit of jealousy?

      bp,

Sorry to bust your bubble but the Indy 500's been around longer than SMASHCAR could ever hope to be. Those old timer NASCAR drivers were still running shine back in 1909. Maybe you should look it up? I'll save you the trouble, NASCAR was founded on Feb. 21, 1948.

And when Kyle can spin his car in a 360 and go on to win, without getting a "Luckydog" wave around, then you can talk your trash.

BTW- How many cars were left running in today's race??? I'll bet they would have had a green/white/checkered flag finish...if there were any cars left running to take the green.LOL

Just change the series name to SMASHCAR and get it over with already.

OnStar and Garmin have the same directions for NASCAR: drive one quarter mile, turn left; drive one quarter mile, turn left, drive one quarter mile turn left . . . .

The hands device is really the one required feature that has saved so many drivers today. Think about it. You can't drive without your hands. Without the hands device, we would have so many NASCAR drivers with just stumps. They would all be called stumpy. Instead we can call them Jeff, Tony, and Junior. The hands device will go down in history as the one safety feature that has really helped NASCAR. It's time for auto makers to install the hands device on all factory produced cars. We need to protect the hands of all Americans.

Probably the same way you can have a "massive heart attack". It's not the number involved, but the magnitude.

I suppose if I was driving, any crash that lifted all 4 wheels off the ground and spun me around like a helicopter, I would consider that massive. But that's just me.

There you go, Rick. If you want to start splitting hairs along the periphery of things and start nit-picking irrelevant items instead of sticking to the main topic, there will be plenty of other readers happy to indulge you, taking you to the cleaners AND school in the process. So just kick back, relax, keep an open mind and learn a little something.

I don't think so. There are lots of innovations that helped to save the driver of which the safety is a part of. If he didn't have the seat belt harness, helmet or the HANS device it probably wouldn't have turned out so well either. Then you can add on the structure of the truck etc..

I think they call it "bump drafting" and not rear ending the car in front of you. As long as rednecks run the racing, other rednecks will continue to get hurt. In a sport that has much decreased audience a little wreck is a a good thing. Any mishap can be explained away as, "that's racing" Then spit the tobacco.

Were you as knowledgeable as a pumpkin, you'd know that the driver was Brazilian. Also in the race was Nelson Piquet Jr, another Brazilian born in West Germany.

Maybe if you got over your prejudices, you would also know that 1/3 of the series' races are held OUTSIDE the old "redneck" southern stomping ground.

Wanna compare sponsor dollars, crowd numbers and percent capacity between NASCAR and ANY other American racing series?

Nascar and Danica Patrick will be responsible for many crashes in their search for more fans to watch a deteriating fan base. She has no place in this experiment and will cause more friction and accidents due to the other drivers changing their performance to accommodate her and NASCARS attempt to get more customers to their events. Someone is going to get hurt trying to change their style or give her a break that other men drivers will not get. This experiment isn't going to work very well or very long.

Stupid comments here about Danica Patrick. Most probably did not actually see the crash she was invovled in. she was driving fine. It was an idiot male driver who drove into her on a straightaway and forced her into a spin to hit the wall. I love it when people who don't hjave a clue about NASCAR make their idiotic comments--just shows their stupidity.

Actually I would muich prefer sitting for 3 hours watching guys stand around until amaybe a little white ball comes to them that they can't catch, or playing with a funny shped brown ball beating the living $hit out of each other to provide tehy are "men"/ Yeah, that's a reallll sport!!!!!!

Just kick back, relax, keep an open mind and you'll learn quite a bit in addition to the fact that it's a waste of time to stand along the sidelines and make petty comments about irrelevant issues. By the way, that WAS a massive crash. A crash much less spectacular that that one killed Dale Earnhardt back in 2001.

Yes, F-1 is a farce and INDYCAR is different of course, and Danica qualifies just about anywhere...as well as most others in the car sports.

You have to be a gearhead and understand just what the cars are doing as well as the drivers. NASCAR is the rock in auto racings' rock & roll.

if these drivers were half as good at driving as they think they are , there would be a lot more cars actually completing the race. i believe it is a redneck mentality makes these people watch just for the crashes ,
