what? you mean this happened with 90 weapons per every 100 civilans in the united states? impossible! you mean any person has the potential to do this? impossible. you mean this happens all the time in other parts of the world but because the victims are not white/christian/capitalistic consumers we dont care about them? NO WAY!!!!!!!!

Look, this kid decided to shoot. The gun didn't make that choice. Let's find out the facts before we start blaming the weapon. If we start doing that, we won't help the person that needs to make the choice not to fire, the shooter, I'm sure he had reasons for what happened and we need to address that.

SamWil - while I agree there should be no rush to judgment on this, I have to add that the easy availability and relatively non-existent controls of handguns has a lot to do with the obscene rate of shootings in this country. While it's true that "guns don't kill people," the proliferation of weapons vendors in America definitely make it a hell of a lot easier for people to kill people.

Witness the much lower gun-related crime rates in Europe, Australia, Asia and even South America compared with documented shootings in the U.S.A., with the only difference in the cultures being the availability of weapons.

Interestingly, the gun lobby and NRA have never taken up this particular issue, preferring to hide behind the 2nd Amendment (which, BTW, was never designed to allow unregulated gun ownership for the general population).

Maybe it's not the guns, Pardners. Maybe it's their national values. Maybe they don't raise snot-nosed kids who are given everything but love, guidance and discipline. Maybe they care less about themselves and how much they have than we do. Maybe they don't bellyache every time something doesn't go their way. Maybe their priorities as a people are in the right place. Maybe they're a little further up the food chain than we are.

I'm a "borderline" liberal and can without reservation say quit blaming the guns for the actions of people. Your blame is misdirected.

@ Acoustictherapy Are you F*cking KIDDING ME? To use you're own argument against you it is a FACT that Australia and Great Britain's crime has RISEN since they outlawed handguns.

Here is just one example of many if you google it

    ()

Please Please stop spouting your liberal nonsense as fact. You can not legislate stupid. You can't legislate criminal actions they will get weapons even if they're outlawed. Those who don't respect laws will do whatever they want whenever they want! It is those of us law abiding citizens that are penalized by your stupid needless laws which result in the endangerment and the wussification of America.

People like you would have us be defenseless against them. People like you think that the no gun sticker on a door will stop a crazy a$$hole from robbing. All those do is keep honest people honest.Which is the type of person who wouldn't f*cking harm a hair on your head and you shouldn't worry about to begin with!

Do you think the Chardon shooter paid attention to the no gun sticker on the door of his High School? OBVIOUSLY NOT.

I hope someday that you never find yourself in a situation where a firearm could save your life.

Also you need to back up your claim on the second amendment as well.

In 2008 and 2010, the Supreme Court issued two Second Amendment decisions. "In District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), the Court ruled that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm, unconnected to service in a militia and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home."

Just like a liberal to blame it all on guns - as if the killer would have never murdered if he didn't have one. Lane probably woke up this morning wondering "what's the use of going to school if all that I get from it is a beating and rejection?" School for him was probably torture day in and day out, but killing his bullies went a little too far. I sure hope that no innocent people got shot.

Why is it easier to walk into a school in America with a loaded gun than it is to walk onto an airplane with a plastic bottle of Coke?

There's something VERY wrong with this picture!!!

a shooting at a school does not crater the economy and one airplane holds ten times at least the number of victims a school shooter is likely to hit; magnitude of harm vs risk of it happening vs cost of preventing it

My heart goes out to all the victims. As someone who currently has kids in the school system, it doesn't matter whether it is in Elementary, Jr. High, H.S., or college,.............. the worry and concern is there in the back of your mind, because it can happen anywhere,...... metal detectors or not.

Some schools have them and some don't - metal detectors at the doors with security. A school that size with 1200 students/possible staff of 75 should.

Just because people think its a safe town and peaceful doesn't mean it can't happen a problem like today at their school.

Forget the backpacks, ipads and cell phones they aren't needed to learn in a school, they weren't needed in past why now.

Sure. Deal with the outcome (kids with guns and a desire to kill) instead of the root causes as to why this is the way it is today. All we do is put band-aids on a gaping chest wound, instead of open-heart surgery when it's really needed. Yeah, more band-aids...that'll fix it.

Sickening. Another kid with a gun. Great, here come all the gun nuts defending their stupid hardware.

I wish all these gun loving a$$hats would spend sometime trying to explain their stance to the victims parents. They make me sick.

You're the first person to bring up gun control so far here.

          Here's a stance for you: 2nd Amendment

Here's another: the suspect is a Junior, which means likely under 18, which means that possessing the handgun in the first place was illegal.

Why do white kids decide to shoot up the entire school, as oppose to shooting the person that p*ssed them off. I don't get it!

If we don't need gun legislation then we don't need abortion / personhood / contraceptive legislation!

What we do need are loving families and a loving community that teaches respect and love for one another. Where emotions are held in check and allowed to be expressed without violent intent. If we can't do this, having guns or not having guns will never solve this problem.

Please stop talking about how low gun crime is in Europe and other areas where guns are either outlawed or strictly regulated. They end up having problems with people using other weapons. Japan has problems with people running around with baseball bats, and England has problems with knives. While I agree something needs to be done about the way we handle guns in America, straight out outlawing them isn't going to work.

My heart goes out to the kids and their families. I don't know what happened to trigger this, but the outcome was very unnecessary.

Sir, I believe that you are mistaken. The alleged gunman, Thomas "TJ" Lane III, is not some 'snot-nosed kid', but rather one whose father is a violent individual charged with attempted murder.

Alleged Chardon High School gunman grew up in troubled family hit by divorce, violence

              by Ron Regan

Not that this gives the younger Lane any excuse for the atrocity that he is alleged to have committed. But his problems appeared to have stemmed from violence, not from from some corrupted 'national values'.

And how did his father get the way he was? Good nurturing, guidance and well-metered discipline, I suppose.

In the 21st century, it is long over due to require electronics in every gun sold to the public that allow only designated individuals the ability to discharge the weapon. If we can make iPads and smart phones, we can certainly only sell smart guns. This is an already developed technology that of course the NRA squashed. Time to grow up people and take responsibility to stop unauthorized children from firing guns.

It is the "adults" in this community - and across this emotionally-insecure/"conservative" nation - who provided the opportunity for this juvenile to have access to a weapon.
T.J. Lane is going to jail in-defense-of an old-fashioned "right" to the - in this case, inappropriate - access of militia<as per, the Constitution]-weaponry. This lad will now wilt his life in prison so that irresponsible "adults" can sit back and "feel safe" that their vote-with-no-oversight has created a more chaotic-world, in which they are "free to project fear."
I hope someone in that insecure-community will take charge of correcting their conservative-error; for the victim here is a boy that his community bullied into the need for adult attention.

"Don't blame the gun," they chirp. Yet, it is in areas where guns are ENCOURAGED that these things occur.
