Early St. Pat’s Day? No, a chemical spill

Strollers look at the green colored Grone creek near Goettingen, central Germany, on March 2. After a fire in a storage building in Goettingen's industrial district, chemicals were released and arrived at the creek together with the fire fighting water.

A young man stands between two streams in Goettingen, central Germany, on March 2. On the right is a green colored stream which is the result of released chemicals due to a fire at a storage facility nearby and flushed into the stream by water used to extinguish the fire. According to police, the chemicals were harmless.

While the German police claim the chemicals that seeped into the Grone creek are harmless, the neon green water makes me think of ooze that could be capable of turning turtles into crime-fighting ninjas.

Hopefully, the authorities are correct and no animals will face karate-chopping futures.

I'm no expert but, I can assume that it must take thousands and thousands of gallons of anything to turn that much water, that green! Again, no expert, but how can that possibly be harmless??

That's right ... you are no expert. The article didn't even mention what the "chemical" is. Claiming it is "harmful" with that serious omission would be extremely ignorant.

Storage building? What storage facility? What KIND of storage? Who OWNS the facility? Who RUNS the facility?

Police claim the water is harmless? (Sure, and color-safe bleach is kool-aid.) Which officer made this statement? Who made the report? A quote, citation, name, and/or a source please.

Firefighters have very detailed procedures for handling fires at chemical facilities. The same is true for Germany. Has the fire department issued some kind of public statement? Considering the very public nature of the fallout, I'm sure a public statement should be in order.

Honestly, if this report is legitimate, and is not simply meant to irate the ecology-conscious, then details should be given. It's been several hours since this report was posted, and even more hours since the supposed incident occurred.

      More facts please.

This is a photo blog. If you want news maybe you should try a german newspaper, perhaps they night report more on the specifics than the photo blog. That is about photos. photo. blog. u. dumb.

I'm actually glad that it was both harmless and bright green. It will hopefully help to show how much runoff is mixed into streams and rivers.

Screw MSN and these stories. Bunch of @!$%#s! Intentional debate starters. Flame bait articles like this with no facts are coming every single day from these guys. Resist the temptation to enter into a discussion where you have zero to go on but speculation. All you're doing is helping them rack up visits to the ads on these pages so they can get money. This is all intentional. MSN doles out EXTREMELY LOW QUALITY MEDIA! All their reporters are total hacks and super incompetent

I agree. There is something missing from the comments though. Some idiot always has to claim that the photo is a fake. I feel inclined to take on that role today. The photo is a fake!

Love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reference, though I hope the river will return to normal.
