msnbc.com staff and news services report — Floods across eastern Australia forced more than 13,000 people to evacuate their homes on Tuesday after record-high summer rains drenched three states over the past week, swelling rivers and forcing dams to overflow.
In the worst-hit state of New South Wales, authorities ordered 8,000 people to leave their homes in the inland city of Wagga Wagga, where flood waters were expected to breach an 11-meter levee and swamp houses and the main business district.
Thousands of people in Wagga Wagga moved to shelter at local schools, while the center of the town, home to around 60,000 people, was deserted on Tuesday. Continue reading.

Fire, Flood, Pestilence. What next?
Global warming maybe...?
Wow, with a city name like Waga Waga, I'd run like hell from the waga waga water...where are the Kangaroos, I heard those folks couldnt swim...
This could be good though. Doesn't Australia need the rain?
@ alan-static
I hope this was a bad joke...one I personally did not find funny!
Too bad... ! poor Aussies ! but they'll get on over all these natural disasters. Anyhow, Australia needs water badly.
The whole country is a dry sponge that the heaviest of heaviest rains wont do much to the land. In the early 70s when I was there we have never witnessed any floods this much. A Kiwi friend of mine, Ted (a geologist) once said that if Australia doesnt get any rain in future, this land would become a desert and could resemble one day like the Sahara or the Gobi Desert in northwestern China. So, what's happening today (floods, tornadoes etc.) means that our planet has become mad.. are we on the way to disappearance ?
In '99 when I was there last, my Uncle & my brother-in-law had put huge, corrugated rain barrels outside their back yards to catch any rain that fell. The weather has apparently changed as they had truly bad flooding last yr. @ Brisbane, Qld., & now this in N.S.W. But at least the rain avoids the fires that kill the animal life esp. the Koalas. They were so desperate for water ( they normally get their fluid from the eucalyptuses leaves they eat ), that they came down from the trees & were actually taking water from kind-hearted humans who gave it to them. Horrible!
My husband is from Wagga Wagga, his family is there(we are in the US). They are ok, but it is still crazy to see the town covered in water. Not to mention, in the international news. This amount of water is never good. Please stay safe!!!
Shona1; I hope all is well with you and yours, and those you may know in this area. Sounds to be not as bad as other natural disasters Australia's been through in the past several years, but my understanding is that this area has been dry for some time; what I'm wondering about is how the run-off and flood waters will affect other areas as well. Take care and be safe!
Didn't the northern part of Australia experience flooding last year? Jus another symptom of climate change that isn't happening according to the wealthy republicrats and the uneducated that follow their calls as though they will become multimillionaires (like they did when they played monopoly as a child).
I am reading the above letters and I marvel at the ignorance being spouted by the writers, either they are hoping to be picked up by David Lettermann or they are so naive as to the happenings throughout Australia.
I lived in Australia in my youth and my parents age 89 and 90 are still in Australia and this is a serious situation they are facing with the floods. The Aussies are very strong stoic people and face the adversities with untold strength but any suport from fellow man is always welcome..... my prayers are with them.
Talking to them on the phone tonight, people are facing a very difficult and life threatening, to say the least, days ahead and I for one hope that they are able to overcome the devastation they face.
I think there were some very bad floods there (NSW) in the early '50's, maybe the Murray River then as well; if this is the Murray. I have lived in Australia '71-'73, '81-'95, without checking a map I think the Murray, one of the most(the most) important rivers in Australia, esp. New South Wales, has flooded many times. I don't recall a spider episode like this however. There may well be another mouse plague after this wet weather. Don't worry that Australians can't handle this; they can and will. Australia is the best kept secret on the planet, I'd go back in a flash and NEVER leave again.
