Children and adults scavenge for recyclables and other usable items at the Trutier dump on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.

Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti two years ago that killed an estimated 316,000 people and left even more people homeless, the number of scavengers at the Trutier landfill outside Port-au-Prince, Haiti has grown from about 200 to an estimated 2,000.

Much of Haiti is still in a crisis situation with tens of thousands living in tent camps in and around Port-au-Prince. A growing concern in the international community continues to be the potential flare-up between ex-members of Haiti's armed forces and the current Haitian President Michel Martelly.

Thank you roc1960 and and the other posters who comment how lucky we are. I thought I was going to see the "why can't they help themselves" comments. These pictures depict the answer to the question perfectly.

    God Bless

Money sent overseas's that is sent with no assurance of oversight quickly vanishes, and never makes it to the people it was intended to help. This is why you can't languidly sit back and write a check to "feel good" about helping others. It requires getting out there in person and sacrificing of your time and sweat to make the situation better. Throwing money at disasters has never worked and never will.

God blessed us all with some intelligence lets use it to help one another, not take from one another. America has many resources lets teach these people to grow their own food and to drill wells to get fresh water isn't that what these charities are supposed to be doing. Someone needs to monitor these people to make sure they are doing what they say with our money that's probably whywe all still have this poverty. We are all Gods people ACT LIKE IT.

I have the answer: move all the folks to Israel. Let the island go back to nature. In a few centuries all will be well on the island. Jews are always going on about the rights of poor folk. I say they should put their money where their mouths are.
