NYPD forces Occupy protesters out of Union Square

NYPD officers confront Occupy Wall Street protesters who are camping in Union Square in New York in the early hours of March 21, 2012.

Police confronted Occupy Wall Street protesters in New York's Union Square just after midnight on Wednesday morning, forcing them to vacate their newly-established camp in the park.

Officers, who cited a usually unenforced rule that the park be closed overnight, made one arrest, according to a report in The New York Post.

On Saturday, police detained 73 people after hundreds of Occupy supporters gathered in Zuccotti Park to mark six months since the start of the movement.

"What's the long-term plan here, NYPD? To close every park in NYC to the entire public forever? That'll go over well," tweeted activist Carrie M.

I find it really offensive that the NYPD will eject protesters from Union Square, but do nothing about the junkies that have invaded the park in recent years. I work one block away and used to eat lunch in the park, but can't anymore due to the drug addicts from nearby clinics who nod off on the benches and harass people for money to get their next fix.

      bho...

Not on my behalf either and I wish the campers would stop saying they represent me or you or anyone I know. They do not represent anything other than making a mess that others pay to have cleaned. The City of New Haven, CT has spent $85,000 in four plus months and says it'll take $20,000 to clean up the remaining mess and bring the color "green" park to the city park the campers ruined.

Oh yeah...I hope the city has the $20,000 left after the woman raped and beaten last week in one of the tents sues the city for failing to protect her on public property. At least in the Hartford tarpland last fall, some occupiers stopped a sexual assault in process...and then kicked the guy out of the camp so he could take his business elsewhere in town. I guess they didn't want the negative publicity that aggravated sexual assault can put on a shantytown. And why care about the safety of women in town who weren't hanging out on the public square holding a goofy sign.

Sad..... Most don't realize protesting the United Corporations of America along with the Three Branches of Oligarchy will be considered terrorism soon. In the coming months ahead many will realize America is lost to corruption, greed and hypocrisy pertaining to the Three Branches of Oligarchy's continued efforts to secure wealth for the United Corporations of America as well as themselves.

My what rant!!! Unfortunately we have heard it before .............

"We are socialists, we are enemies of today’s capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are determined to destroy this system under all conditions". Adolf Hitler

Fortunately things have not gotten quite bad enough just yet to fall for the childish Utopian rant.

it doesn't matter where your politics lie; if you claim to represent 99% of the People you have fascist tendencies. no one group represents 99% of anybody; no church; no political body and certainly not these people

I'm starting to believe that OWS people think anyone who works for a living and pays taxes is part of the 1%. If not please don't put me in with your 99% figure. I work 1 full time job and 2 part time jobs, pay taxes, have a 1 bedroom apt and i drive a subaru. I do not expect anyone to give me anything for free. I do not expect people to do anything for me. If i want something i work my butt off to get it. The OWS doesn't even have a true goal theres like 40 different goals, for crying out loud can one of you pick one and stick with it. Keep beating your drums for your going nowhere protest that at this point i'm not even sure what your protesting today.

The word is out that the guys running Ben & Jerry's ice cream are taking donations and building a fund to write PAYCHECKS for occupiers...so they will stick things out waiting for pay. In Connecticut during Hartford's occupy mess, there were help wanted ads in the paper looking for "Activists"...at $440 weekly.

Neither 'Ben' nor 'Jerry' or any of their products will find their way into my house or stomach in the future.

                  WRONG ! ! !

I'm a 99%er, an Occupy Wallstreet Protester, and you are COMPLETELY WRONG.

We want only a few, simple solutions:

                  1. Shut down all Oil Companies

                  2. Pay my Student Loans

                  3. Pay of the $674,000 mortgage payment for a 1 bedroom apartment my brother bought. I make $320 a week, and the place is worth $98,000.

                  4. Jail all Educated White Males (from age 35-50)

                  5. Close Exxon/Mobil

                  6. Raise taxes on rich to 55%

                  7. Give FREE Healthcare to ALL.

                  8. Re-elect Obama for a 2nd, 3rd, & 4th term

                  9. Make Marijuana not only legal, but mandatory

                  10. Raise Welfare Benefits 300%

These are some simple, easy first steps. After that we can work on the Republicans.

(classic logic by a typical Occupier: Stupidity in speech is their motto)

                  Allergic...

You're missing a few...last week the New Haven, CT occupiers said they would not leave their camel herder tarp city because their demands were not met...including "expanded library hours" and an increase in the number of government "UNION" jobs. They also demanded that the mayor of New Haven's salary be cut by $90,000...to the average of the average city worker's paycheck.

Almost forgot...another demand...banks should no longer be entitled to repossess a house they were financing whether mortage payments are being made or not.

                  Yup...great plan !

I just finnished watching a report on the 17 year old that was Shot in Orlando. Here is a synopsis of their 6 minute report:

                    1. Afroamerican Woman giving her biased opinion, she was NOT at the scene.

                    2. MSNBC Reporter asking biased & leading questions.

                    3. Afroamerican Woman from a local NAACP Charter, asking for protests..."Borderlining insighting violence"

                    4. MSNBC Reporter asking biased & leading questions.

                    5. National NAACP Spokeswoman, quoting false facts.

                    - Where was the Police Department Spokesman...?

                    - Where are ANY LATINO OPINIONS, as the Shooter was Hispanic.

Let me say this again: a few days ago on another article on this newsvine, people were asking why there weren't protests about the shameful condition this country is in, why Americans weren't taking to the streets. I also saw a lot of comments sympathetic to the people overseas who were not permitted to protest, who were being beaten down by their government. Now we have many of the same people, saying "get a job" and "go back to your parents' basement." Obviously, we are schizophrenic.

The anti-OWS sentiment is typified by the necessity for the 1% to run their lives. It is not the OWS that requires a government babysitter/handout it is the people against the OWS that suck up to the 1%. It is the 1% that owns the government. if you want to deny that you are blind as well as ignorant.

If you low life, lazy people cannot get your butts off the couch to try affecting change in this corrupt system you should at least be proud of the people who do have the grit and gumption to get out there and push back.

I'll bet all these pro-OWSers will find a way to defend this vandalism and health hazard.

How do these morons expect to be taken seriously when they have no unified cause, feel entitled to trespass anywhere and anytime at will, feel they don't have to pay back any of their debts, and literally $h*t everywhere??
