A Japanese fishing boat that was lost at sea after the 2011 tsunami has been found off the coast of B.C.
Vancouver Sun reports: VANCOUVER -- After being flushed out to sea by last year’s massive tsunami and earthquake, a Japanese squid-fishing boat has drifted across the Pacific Ocean and was about 120 nautical miles off British Columbia’s north coast Friday evening. The 150-foot ship was found drifting right-side-up about 140 nautical miles (260 km) from Cape Saint James, on the southern tip of Haida Gwaii.
“It’s been drifting across the Pacific for a year, so it’s pretty beat up,” said marine search coordinator Jeff Olsson of Victoria’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.
A ship unmoored by the 2011 tsunami has arrived near British Columbia's north coast. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Huh. I guess this also explains some "ghost ship" sightings in the past as well.
Canada does have an Air Force (I would assume with armament)....since no one in Canada has a gun or projectile weapon. The Air Force most likely needs practice.........so start a new reef!
How can you be so so ignorant and / or sarcastic about your northern neighbor...we fought alongside of you in every war and conflict in the last 100 years . Our Air Force is one of the best in the world...and as far as owning guns...we simply have a better way to keep them off the streets...READ...less homocides.
No one in Canada has a gun? That is far far far from the truth. They just have responsible gun laws that stop people from running around with guns like cowboys/thugs and shooting other people and themselves.
right, and that 2 billion Canadian dollar boondoggle to register all long guns sure stopped crime, didn't it.Now your Parliament is getting rid of that ridiculous law.Welcome to the 21st Century.
At least Canada doesn't cave in to those Thug NRA, Koch Brother, Christian Right-Wing, Tea-Party LUNATICS where they feel every American should own a gun, Shoot 1st, and don't worry about the consequences LAW all while maintaining a low crime rate!! So much for that theory regarding the 2nd Amendment!!!
Also seems to me that their citizens don't go Bankrupt when a family member has a major illness b/c Health Care is covered and did I happen to mention that they're not blaming our Black President for high fuel costs because they know it's a market driven commodity.
Give me a break, Canada has not had a real air force in 40 years. They gave up on their national defense along with the rest of the free world and dumped it on the U.S. If you don't believe me how long do you think the canadian air force would last againt a real air force like the chinese or russians have without the U.S.
Scopata /KingofZed - Please understand that some of us Americans actually do appreciate Canada. Unfortunately, some people's view of what the 21st Century should be isn't much different than the 19th.
canada doesn't border mexico kingzofed. the huge masses of illegals from the south forming gangs such as ms13 and the multitude of others doesn't help our illegal gun , drug and crime problem. we have gun laws , its just we have a doj and ag that let guns get into the cartels hands through innocent retailers to kill americans and mexican citizens.don't mean to be off subject , just food for thought.
KINGOFZED........if the USA had identical gun laws as Canada there would still be gun crime. I don't believe Canada has the inner city garbage this country is cursed with...........
Dale
"Inner city garbage" we know what you mean. And you're wrong. Canada is very multi-ethnic.
Canada has 1/10 of the population and their health care is breaking the government 75% of all tax dollars go to healthcare. Ontario legalized brothels and pimps have a retirement now, no no garbage in canada... LOL you wanna be frenchys make me laugh!
Please, don't believe that educated Americans make excuses for our problems or that we think Canada is anything but a great friend to us. The US-Canadian border is the longest undefended border in the world. Long may it remain so.
Many of these remarks are made by juvenile idiots who paid no attention in history class. Some of them have yet to take a history class.
Hey...Yoyobunch...boy are you misinformed or...plain ignorant...Canada HAS a real Air Force and we DID NOT give up our national defence to ANYBODY period. OH !...and how long would you last if the rest of the free world would not come to your aid if the Russians & Chinese dicide to try and take you out...
Getting back on subject, I wonder if there are any bodies still on board that ship? If there are I bet their families woudl appreciate being able to give them a proper burial.
One of the best Air Forces in the world huh? Well if were going off of a scale like that... The United States has one of the best educational systems in the world!
Drastically smaller population accounts for that.
Fewer homos = fewer homocides.
Hey Honorably Discharched...read Peridod 1693859
Lol, Markutk. You get the funniest comment award!
Markutk...You should also read Period 1693859...
Hey Jerome, I spent over twenty years flying fighters in the Marines, that's how ignorant I am. I know more about your so called air force than you do.
It's amazing how little of history some American's actually know.
Canada was one of the countries that participated in D-Day. It was Canadian forces that stormed Juno Beach. They have also been along side of America in every conflict since, including Afghanistan and Iraq.
As an additional note, the distance world record for a confirmed sniper kill was done by a Canadian soldier.
I love my Canadian neighbors and consider them part of our North American family. Not so much on my southern neighbors.
Hey Canada...these right wingers are something else..they cant sday a word or reply back anything positive without stepping on everyone else in a negative way..we civilized educated people down here have to live with these past loving primative people..at least they dont really affect you guys up there like they do us here. Anything to spin negative are the republictards..Please forgive them as they dont believe in school nor higher education...just their guns and bibles is all they need..
ManFromNantucket - I was thinking the same thing. And, how many other vessels are out there with the missing on them? A more horrific thought is how many people were washed out to sea on one of these ships and survived the initial event only to starve to death later?
Im amazed how the republictards can take a story way out of context..its about a drifting ship at sea and they manage to insult our neighbors in the process..Im sure CANADA will sdink it into a reef if it poses a hazard...some down south dont mind junk in their shores, backyards or houses. I guess a person gets use to junk when thats all they have...
pretty pathetic that a blog about a ghost ship starts with comments for and against gun ownership and who has the best Air force. When neither has anything to do with the story
I wonder if these ships really are haunted? maybe not if it had no passengers on it or if none died on it. It may be the next haunted ship movie in the making? Those fish will love it when it finally rests at the bottom of the ocean.
Ferrosynthesis..........what does Canda being very multi-ethnic have to do with our inner city garbage? Come on down and take a walk in Detroit and just maybe you'll understand. I'd make out my will first though.
What amazes me Bob is how a liberatard such as yourself cannot even comment on the wrong direction of a comment vine without bringing insults into it as to somehow make yourself superior to all others who do not believe in your way of life
That is one well built ship....
Is anyone else embarrased by the ignorant right wing and their endless barrage of comments of hatred and stupidity on these sites?
scopata - Canada actually has lots of firearms owned by civilians, including some that can't be owned by Americans. For example, HK makes a semi-auto version of the MP7, but you can't own them in the USA thanks to our ridiculous 922r regulation.
i like that ship maybe it can be restored...might be a good deal for somebody...hate to see it go to waste...
yoyobunch...I have the highest respect for the US Armed Forces and what they do to keep us free. But for you to say that we gave up our our national defense is plain ignorant on your part... especially. as you say, having been part of the US Marine Air Force. We have 1/10th your population and as I write this ...Canada has an ongoing order for 86 of your new fighters that are still on the drawing board. So I consider your statement as an insult to all Canadians...period.
Some of the best troops that I have ever served with were Canadian. Their snipers are the best in the world. Their troops are "strack" and very professional. I'd fight along side of them again, any day!
BTW, bob, I'm a conservative. This isn't political though, so hush.
Canada had a fanstastic plane called the "Arrow"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CF-105_Arrow
http://www.avro-arrow.org/Arrow/avrostory.html
This comment really is to Jerome Lavoie. I laugh at people/Canadians that make statements like these: "we fought beside you in every war and conflict over the last 100 years. We have one of the best airforces in the world" Ok does Canada have a super flighter? Does it have a Euro Fighter? A new SU series of fighter, or an F22Rapotor/or F35 next Stealth Fighter, a stealth bomober, global strike capabilities? No. The United States, UK, France, Germany, Italy, China and Russia do. So by one of the best Air Forces in the world are you comparing it to third world countries? The US spent 8 Billion dollars on video games last year. Thats more then Canada spent on DEFENSE last year. Why does Canada spend so little on defense. Because the United States is your neighbor that spends hundreds of billions of dollars on defense per year. Think of what the US Econmy could be if we didn't have that on our backs. So you can be proud of your country, Canada is a great country. However Canadians seem to forget the blanket of peace they sleep under at night is on the shoulders of the American people, not Monty's.
If the arrow was so fantastic why didn't it make it? The Arrow was a mach 2 fighter with a ceiling of 50 thousand feet. It was not gound breaking. It was devolped in the late 50's would have hit production in the early 60's. The US had the SR-71 Blackbird operational in the early 60's now that was ground breaking technology. There are many concept plans that are designed, built, and test flown and never make it for budget concerns etc. We aren't talking about should have, would have beens. We are talking about what do you REALLY HAVE. You can't fight wars with pretend aircrafts. Thats my point. So can the talk about the Arrow (a craft that MIGHT have been good in combat, but we will never know) please stop. If that what you point to as a major achievement in fighter aircraft well that just proves my point.
To be honest I'm more embarrassed by the entitlement attitude of the feel sorry for me left wing.
Don't let these Canadians fool you... Vancouver has some serious gun crime. All the Asian and East Indian gangs are shooting it up on a regular basis. Don't forget the Hells Angels either. Lots of Angels in B.C. One of the Asian gangs shot a Hells Angel member up in front of a Casino last summer. Lot's of people in Canada DO have weapons.
FEDUP - Canada did not participate in Iraq. You must have us confused with the British. We hate that.
@Mike Thompson - wow - those are some cooooool sounding names - oh yea America's economy is build on this military industrial complex (i suggest you read a little more)
Nancy's Red Diaper Doper Baby
To be honest I'm more embarrassed by the entitlement attitude of the feel sorry for me left wing.
More ignorance and stupidity from the uneducated reich / right wing. Sorry Nancy, a little education can go a long way. Maybe you should look into who the welfare and entitlement states really are, but then again, your ilk hate facts and reality and would rather bask in ignorance, hatred, and racism.
How far can we go off target. Check to see if the ship has fuel on board remove if it does so we don't screw up the ocean more than we already have. Than it is up to Canada to do with it as it may. Could even be salvaged. By the way there are more boats on there way. Think before we react. that is why most of you shouldn't have guns. The rest of us who think before we react can.
Easy everyone, easy. Hey, no hard feelings to the Canadians. As a token of our friendship, we're giving you Sarah Palin.
@kamanda fluery LOL!!! Do you know what it cost to operate just one carrier group for one day? With pay, food, supplies? Our economy is BUILT on it....AHAHAHAHAH. O thats good. No, our econmy is actually built on gold and back door deals. I am a Stock Broker I know! =) I am a realist. I have nothing against Canada. The US isn't perfect...far from it. I just have a problem when Canadians pound on there chest about there military might. I know you have a complex about it. If my neighbor every morning woke and said Im the greatest in the world, it annoy me too! However Canada is LUCKY to have us as a neighbor. There is a reason why every major country in the world has its gold reserves under lock down in NYC at the Federal Reserve Bank of NY. Read a little more, o god thanks, I needed that laugh. Now the immediate Washington DC area does thrive on defense contracts. But the NATIONAL Econmy, o god thats good one!
Maybe Canada has 1/10th the crime as the United States because it has 1/10th the people?
The saddest thing is the US is full of Right Wing Cowboy Wannabees with extreme cases of paranoia. In Canada they have cowboys, but they actually ride horses and chases cows etc. IN the US the wannabes just buy guns and hate anyone who is not like them.
We try to keep them in Texas but one gets out from time to time and they have scattered their minions into a number of Southern and Midwest States.
By the way to the IDIOT who said Canada has less murders than the US because it has less people The murder rate is given by "Per 100,000 of Population" and the rate in the US is TRIPLE the rate in Canada and it has been such for the last 12 years, though the murder rate in the US was about 10% higher than when Bush was sitting in the White House...Uh Correct hat...Sitting at his Ranch. And the only major country with a higher rate is Russia, but their rate has dropped by 50% over the last decade. Turkey, Cambodia, Libya, Iran are among the countries with rates at least 30% lower than the US.
Hey, you know what Canadiens call Americans dontcha?-------Upper Mexicans------ROFLMAO
don'tdrinkthewater SAID
Sorry I don't think Canada will accept our toxic waste.

It's amazing how little of history some American's actually know.
Canada was one of the countries that participated in D-Day. It was Canadian forces that stormed Juno Beach.)
It's amazing how little history Canadians know. England was being attacked by Germany, so it was expected Canada and Australia would go and protect their mother country...
Drastically smaller population accounts for that.
Fewer homos = fewer homocides.
lern2spell. Your argument might be taken more seriously.
Frankly True - If you are referring to me I think I said 1/10th the crime, not 1/10th the murder rate. I think Canada is a fine place, my son and I go to Whistler every winter snowboarding. The few snide remarks on here don't mean nothin'. Canada has a well qualified Navy, I have operated with them in the Pacific many times and visited them in Vancouver also. I don't see how an atricle about a salvagable drifting derilect off the coast of Canada can turn into bashing each other about who's best and who isn't. I'm glad Canadians have National Pride but, eh...How about respecting your neighbor to the south?
Wow, a lot of "fluff" on this one!!! Most of it has nothing to do with the article!!!!
Looks like most people commenting on this article are nothing more than ANGRY TROLLS!!!!
Relax guys, its an article about a Japanese fishing boat!!!

I wonder what shape the engines are in? Someone must have boarded her by now, maybe it can be preserved as a memorial on our continent.
Bob,
Repubs just need their Guns and Bibles, un-Educated. You need to take a history lesson in the Civil War and see what the South was mainly comprised of and still is, good ol'boy Dems carrying Bibles and Guns. Most of the free citizens in the United States, own and keep guns and Bibles, this covers people in all the political brackets. You just got to get all of them to tell the truth about it.
You can tell who has never served in the military, and uses uninformed drivel about America being the savior and protector of Canada pretty easily. Canadian troops are highly skilled and relatively well-equipped compared to most of the world.
Do they make war, death and imperialism their top priority? No. They tend to favor spending money on the health and welfare of their citizens.
Also, Canada is ethnically diverse, including very large Muslim populations in certain areas. But yet still does not have the violence or terrorism concerns associated with America. To state something like, "the ghetto trash is responsible for America's violence" is just asinine pin-headed rhetoric. In truth, whites set the stage for a violent America when they conducted full-scale exterminations of Native Americans and raping, murdering and enslaving Africans. Blacks have a LONG LONG LONG road to go to ever hope to catch up to the evil and carnage done by white Americans.
Canada was in WWII 2 years before US was in it. Shall we cite laziness there.... fear on the US's part? Canada is always first to stand behind us in any shoot happy stupidity we dive into now in current times just because they are faithful allies. Shall I post the wild meat my relatives bring home and utilize unlike the factory hormone fed crap you eat daily?
I could only hope that one day they would show us all their guns and save us from the ignorant conservative minions like you.
You are so correct John. The divide is slowly closing but there will never be equality in my lifetime.
I this article was about a ship off the coast of Canada?
I seriously doubt if there is anyone left aboard alive or dead but I'm sure there is an insurance company somewhere "Lloyds of London" maybe that would be interested in recovering the boat.
(Born American in 1985). See the previous comments on this page. Has absolutly nothing to do with a ship offshore of Canada. Matter of fact.. look at any other blog page on any other random information and you will see the same.. Comments never have anything to do with the story. Ignorant people just randomly blurt out stupid comments and people throw out the words.. liberal, republican, democrat, right wing, tea party, gun control, .... You people are all pathetic. And as educated as you try to make yourselves sound on a comment page.. you all sound like idiots.. and your just leaving a bad example and print for the future of our country. It makes me feel sorry for my country. And now, I understand why everyone hates us. Its the ignorant and stupid people like you that cause so much hate for our America. And by you, I mean 90% of the American commenters on this page, and any other page for that fact.
- Now for all the ignorant idiots out there.. Its your time to shine.. Go ahead and lash out at my spelling, my grammer, my age, my ideas.. take a guess at my religion and my political status, make assumpsions about my ethnicity and what state or part of the country im from.. mention something about my educational background, guess bout my thoughts on the 2nd ammendment.. Say what you want, for the rest to see.. Because I will not return to see your comments, and I will not to reply. And the reason: Because I dont want to be another dumb, ignorant and stupid American like the rest of you.. - Take a moment to think about yourself.. Have a nice day.
Jeff
I thought this article was about a lost ship that had been found?? Guess I missed that part where it was about whether or not canada was as good as the united states=/
RegularJoe - Canada gained the authority to declare war independently in 1931 under the Statute of Westminister. The UK declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939, but Canada did not until 10 September 1939.
You Liberal Leeches:
I would stack my education up against yours anytime. I have on last count, 3 science college degrees, 30 odd guns only one or two of which are on the Federal books. I don't have any bibles, qurans or any other fantasy books unless they were written by CS Lewis or RE Howard.
Our self administering colony to the north, has more of a security force than a real military. Their training is good, but considering the poplulaton of Canada and its tax base, it cannot afford a large standing army. In the past it just provided cannon fodder for the Brits, as part of the common wealth. i am not knocking their fighting ability, they were better than the average Brit, for the same reasons Americans from the west were, they grew up hunting and shooting, and possessed inate skills learned as a child. Canucks made great snipers and were considered by all accounts in WWI, shock troops, feared way more by the Germans than the Brits, as were the Americans. This carried over to WWII as well
Most while most of you Canucks will rebel at being labeled a colony, you have to admit that most of you live within 300 miles of the Canadian border and your population is only about the size of Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico combined. I've worked in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and I know the people there have more in common with us Americans that they do with Ontario or British Columbia. They feel like the resource colonies for the other provinces, and given half a chance would probably volunarily become part of the US and would be welcome too.
The fact is, if Canada had to foot the bill for its own defense, instead of cowering under the American nuclear umbrella, they wouldn't have enough money to waste on such wrong headed programs as national health insurance. Their navy couldn't even provide the ships necessary for defense of a single carrier group much less a task force of any kind. Escort duty maybe. The mothballed air fleet at Davis Montham AFB in Arizona is several times larger than the Canadian air force, which has at last count....2 aerial tankers...imagine that! And they are all second hand commercial planes! They have one UAV...! They have 5 40 year old C-130 Hercules transports..They have about 90 odd F-18s that are approaching 30 years old...and a bunch of other fixed and rotor wing aircraft in various stages of decrepitude. Most of their weapons have made in USA tags on them, all their bombs and missles are US exports, except two, one a machine gun made in Europe and a rocket made by Bristol Aerospace. Their military sounds like what the Brits used to call a Provincial or Colonial Militia to me. We provide the weapons and the colony provides the manpower. Sad but true. So it is obvious, that Canada cannot provide for their own defense AND free healthcare, so you could say the US already pays for Socialized Healthcare...in Canada. The American tax payer says you are welcome for underwriting your freebie.
You will never get a liberal to admit that these programs amount to picking someone's pocket to pay give the money to someone else. If they came up to you on the street at gun point and took money from your wallet, you might not like it. But they do the same thing every payday to pay for someone elses medical bills. I rarely go to the doctor, when I do, I pay for it out of pocket, or with insurance I pay for monthly. I watch what I eat, work out regularly and am in excellent health. Why on earth should I pay for smokers, obese couch potatos and general dead beats? Why I ask you. I could give a @!$%# about them. I don't need that charitable benevolence to feel good about myself or my life. I think that is what drives most liberals, they either have so much money they won't miss it, or have their hand out, or are so miserable in their small empty cat filled lives that they need someting to make them feel good about themselves, to feel superior it you will, so they attempt to capture the moral high ground by champion the have-nots under the umbrella of equality. Piss on it and them. I worked for what i have and am doing right by my kids. I don't want to spend my retirement watching TV and living from governement check to government check, like most liberals undoubtably do.
Newsvine posters LMAO - some of you would get riled up about the shape of a potato - seek mental help!
testing one two three
As an American, I'm ashamed at the anti-Canadian comments here. Same old hateful right-wing thug types flaunting their ignorance to yet another group of people they have no respect for.
The Canadian comments I see are absolutely correct. Their country isn't perfect but they've solved a lot of problems that we haven't. I wonder how many of you righteous USA-USA-USA types have ever even been to Canada?
Hint: They have less nut-job right-wingers and more nice, respectful, thoughtful people. I've done business with them for many years.
SorryforAmerica, what does your comment have to due with a ship at sea. Will you stay on point and save your commentary for the philosophy section of the Vine. Maybe you should go jump in the sea so you don't have a complete melt-down. This is the MSNBC not a MEMSA symposium. You don't like the thread, ignore it.
yak, see post 1.35
Agreed Mike. I've seen some documentaries about Canadians (and Canadian snipers) in Afghanistan. They fight hard.
However, I don't see many liberals lining up to ignorantly bash Canada. You're a rarity and I respect you for that.
Ok, so after reading these comments here is what i have learnt
1) Both Dems and Republicans are the same. Both know how to get off topic and in some way, shape or form want the same thing. Both actually dont know what they want though.
2) NOBODY KNOWS HOW TO STAY ON TOPIC
3)Americans are just as confused as Canadians when it comes to HISTORY, GUN LAWS and MILITARY. (not stranded ships on the coast that have nothing to do with HISTORY, GUN LAWS and MILITARY)
4) People are ignorant
5)Lefty and Righty?!? I was tought by the age of two what that difference is, maybe people need to learn their directions before talking politics (its a joke)
6) Japan had an Earthquake last year?!? Where was I? (again a joke)
The Blame Canada song is just too damn catchy. But seriously the guy spouting off about Canada should read up on the 1812 war. Canada purchased 65 F-35's in 2010. They also fly F-18 Hornets.
dear mudrake, im happy there are people like you in America. you are surely contributing to the downfall of american society. YOur thoughtless and careless behavior and attitude is what is wrong with our country. we all should care about our fellow man to a certain extent, you are nothing but an animal driven on impulse to insure the survival of your own offspring. congrats for being a part of the "American Pig" demographic of America. you are truly a caveman
God damn my finger is bleeding from clicking the "no value" option.
Anyone know what marine law applies to lost ships.
@ashp Well said my man
BAH-HAHAHAHA! Greatest. Thread. Ever. This thread has made my day, NIGH!, my week and it's only Tuesday! I shall chuckle all week long at the very irrelevant to this story, but hilarious, "Who's Appendage is Bigger" argument and revel in the fact that feeling's of inadequacy are worldwide...
You're welcome, "Just a Squirrel!"
Wow! How did an article about a derilect ship turn into a GOP platform? My personal apologies to any Canadians offended by the childish remarks of the Trolls that inhabit the web. May Canada always be the shining light of reason that it is today. I served with many Canadians and your armed forces are professional and impressive. Thank you for serving alongside of us in many conflicts.
Thank you Navy Patriot and to those other supportive and friendly Americans.. Seems to be a lot of pent up feelings in the US. Luckily those Trolls aren't what makes America great.
How weird, it travelled the same way all the radiation did
No Yak, all you see lining up to bash the Canadians are trolls. The nature of the beast is actually apolitical; they get off on stirring s**t because they are basement dwelling children with no self-esteem who gratify themselves by attacking others in a way that they feel is safe for them. I don't believe they have any firm political, social, spiritual, moral, or ethical beliefs. I see you mean well; please don't let them lead you, it only
"feeds" them.
Amazing that it's still floating considering the buldge pumps have not been running for a year. Rain water, condensation, leaking, etc.....Amazing!!
That has to be one well built ship!!!
The bilge pumps could be running. Another story about this ship says the owners were contacted and said the ship was sitting dockside when the tsunami hit. No crew were on board when it washed out to sea. The generators may have been left running when the crew evacuated. With full fuel tanks and the engines not being used the generators could be powering the bilge pumps when needed. The generators would have to be spectacular to have run continuously for a year though.
In another note: squid are pleased!
I'm trying to sort out how no one spotted a 150 ft ship in all this time. I'm sure there were rescue helicopters throughout that area, why didn't someone document an intact ship in the area at the time?
It is just a planned sneak attack by those tricky Japanese Navy folks. They are still attacking from WW II. It has to be true because I saw an episode like that on Gilligans Isle. ....Hold on, my tinfoil hat needs adjusting.

Bill-894863
The bilge pumps could (have been) be running. Another story about this ship says the owners were contacted and said the ship was sitting dockside when the tsunami hit.
JACK Colton:

---------------------------------------------------------------
Wow, you guys know yer bilge pumps. Let me take the middle ground. If those pumps were running, Bill-894863, I think they would not still be running this many months later. Since I'm no expert, let me ask do they run on diesel?
For JACK Colton: You say there should have been rescue helicopters. Copters would have been hours arriving and would have been focused on rescue of people on land. Months later nobody is thinking "where's my boat." More like 'where's my family and house, and how close am I nuke contamination.' To me it seems a huge problem that survivors get ignored while the focus is on the NUKE plant farther south.
As long as the hatches are locked down and water tight doors closed this ship will float until it rusts holes in the hull.
Made in Japan. Now lets sink it. Join venture for the US Navy and the Canadian Fishing Fleet, they can use harpoons.
I'm sure it has feet of water in it, those pumps stopped long ago. After the fule ran out it would have ran on batteries for maybe a week at best. I am suprised no one has offered to go get it for the scrap value? It must be sealed up pretty tight so the electronic's in it are in shape too. I am sure someone will tow it in soon.
Could it be that someone may have spotted it before but never reported it since it's a squid boat?
Could it also be that the reason no one hunted for it was because it was assumed sunk by the tsunami?
Could it also be that the reason it never sank was because it doesn't have enough water in it even if the pumps weren't running?
@James - Thank you for bringing the article back into play. I thought we were talking about gun control for a brief moment. I was wondering if this had been a docked vessel at the time or did it have crew members aboard at some point that got caught in the tsunami.
This ship has a lot of scrap value plus possibly 10,ooo or more gallons of fuel. It may even be repairable given how high its floating it's probably dry inside and the rust on the sides is stains on the paint from things on the deck that weren't painted like chains and tools left on deck. I would think that some salvage company will grab this its only 120 nautical miles out (140 miles ) if only to get their company name in the national news.
Question: why would a rescue helicopter look for an unoccupied ship when there were so many people to be rescued after the tsunami last year? There was no point in that search. Doubtless she was written off as lost and if there was insurance, the claim was paid in full.
The insurance company now has salvage rights, or the shipping company if the loss wasn't covered. If they're interested, they'll claim it.
Thank you, that answers my question above. I didn't know about this other story and thought there might be dead people on board whose families would appreciate a burial.
Actually Peridot, if its in international waters then anyone who can retrieve it can take ownership of it. if that were the case then they would be responsible for the removal of the hazard it presents in its condition. I watched a documentry on ships lost at sea and who casn claim them..it does have value tho and I would go get the thing if I could..
It could very well be salvaged. Just let it keep floating closer and snag it before it reaches the Canadian shore.
Canada has a very qualified Navy homeported in Vancouver. I've operated with them many times while stationed on Frigates operating out of Long Beach and San Diego.
Sink it?
Ever occur to any of you "just Blow it Up" types that it likely contains oil/gas which would be toxic? They won't 'sink it' they will tow it into port, and it will be salvaged for the metals after making sure it is safe.
Pat In Japan: Point remains. Because of how many people were involved in the search, rescue, and cleanup process, Im still shocked that an undamaged 150 ft vessel snuck through everything without someone eventually tracking and retrieving it. That isn't exactly a small boat.
Hey Pat In Japan. The primary bilge pumps in this ship would be electric. I imagine the media in Japan have put forth their own theories as to why a 150 foot ship has drifted across the Pacific Ocean and not taken on water, especially after being hit by a wave higher than the deck.
Weird.
Not to mention creepy.
Why don't they just skuttle the darn thing?
I see target practice in the near future!!
Someone better check how much diesel fuel or bunker 'C' she's got in her fuel tanks before they send it to the bottom.
They have to find out who owns the ship first...I know its been a year, but Im sure, even after a year, there are certain legalities involved before they scuttle it.
They should just tow it to a port, and let is sit for a while longer. Although it looks like a garbage heap, theres still monetary value to the ship. It may be part of a fleet.
Give it another 6 months...THEN scuttle it.
Why sink it? If it's lasted a year floating around in the pacific, it's a sound ship. It should be salvaged and either repaired or salvaged for scrap.
Some are worried that radiation might be a problem, but it's very unlikely since the radiation leak was much later than the tsunami, but it's easy enough to survey thing if that's a worry. And even it was contaminated, you wouldn't want to sink it in the ocean.
The real worry is that zone of trash that collects in the middle of the pacific. The pacific rim countries should do something about that.
ORB, what were you back in the day? "Bunker "C" is a term that I haven't heard since my Navy power plant days. That's some nasty stuff that seems to jump on your clothes and there is no getting it out.
BTW (scuttle)
The fuel on board is why and I'm sure someone has salvage rights to the vessel as long as they can get it to port.
I doubt the ships bildge pumps would be running as they are most likely electric. I am almost certain this is a diesel powered vessel, as such the ships generators would also be diesel. If the generators had indeed been on line at the time she was pulled to sea they would have expended their fuel oil service tanks long ago. You don't take a direct suction from your cargo tanks because of the possibility of water being in the fuel. (Yes you fight that all the time). A suction is taken from a cargo tank by means of a fuel oil transfer pump and a sample is taken for water. The fuel is then discharged to a fuel oil service tank usually on a daily basis, allowed to settle and another sample for water taken prior to shifting tanks. That boys n girls is your marine engineering lesson for today. :)
Hmmmm...
All those military, merchant and tankers sunk during WWll along with other ships lost over the years and people have serious concerns over the environmental impact of a 150 ft fishing boat in the Pacific?
Personally, I would be checking out the the insured/salvage value of the vessel vs the cost to salvage if the vessels owners haven't done the same.
They wont sink it with the fuel in it and will most likely wait to see where it drifts to in order to take further action..It may cost more to remove the fuel than what its worth. If it turns south,it may end up down south and some other country will have to deal with it...not that its the canadian problem yet but may end up so if it keeps coming at them. Then they will have no choice to remove the fuel and sink it..costing money in the process.
They probably will after pumping out the fuel tanks. A 150ft ship will be carrying a fuel load measured in tons. It's probably the Japanese Current that brought it this far and will eventually turn her south.
You would think they would give the radiation levels on board, in the report. Sink the damn thing before it comes any closer.
I think the problem with radiation didn't occur until after the tsunami washed away everything. Would there be any bodies on board? Weird..
...The ship is most likely from the northern Sendai region where they have a lot of fishing villages. The Fukushima-Daiichi plant is about 60 miles south of Sendai. Dangerous levels of fallout didn't make it that far. So I'm pretty sure the ship is safe.
radiation happened days after. i wonder if there are any other 'ghost ships' out there from this event.
I remember the dog that was found alive floating on driftwood or something several weeks after the tsunami. I think it was a month or so.
Where did you see anything mentioned about radiation? I've been reading about this ship all week, and there is no talk of radiation.... and that makes perfect sense. Not only would this ship have to have been in the absolute right place and the right time for it to be hit with radiation, it likely would have been well out to sea before the Fukashema reactors began to leak high levels of radiation.
The bigger concern is that if the ship sank, it would release oil/fuel into the ocean.
I was talking about radiation released from the nuclear plant days after, which I don't even think applies here. The previous poster brought it up and I don't know where that came from either. Not everything was exposed to radiation after the tsunami. This ship was probably sent out to sea in the preliminary waves that hit. Remember they say that in most cases, the water recedes quite a bit before the big wave comes in. As we saw in the Indonesian tsunami videos. But I am just guessing.
If there is no abnormal levels of radiation on board then state so. If nothing is mentioned, of course people will assume a cover up.
I prefer to be cautious than ignorant.
nobody is stating a cover up. the previous poster mentioned it, probably had nothing to do with it, but loosen up your panties. nobody is claiming anything here, just commenting. Read all the posts. If you are trolling for argument, we ain't bitin'. Not everything is controversial.
Houstionite,
The radiation plumes will be circling the globe many times before diluting and falling via precipitation. The problem with these abandon floating vessels is the act as magnets and absorb the radiation. Hence, the radiation would be more concentrated and will deliver a higher than average dosage where it lands.
PS: Piwhene sto thiaolo.
That's just it though. We could waste a large amount of tax dollars sending out a team to verify that the ship indeed is not irradiated, but people like you would accuse them of a cover up. Best to just ignore the loons and soon enough they'll go back to worrying about chem trails.
Ok, so lets spend the money colonizing the moon, instead.
Hard to argue with the two digit society.
God bless Amerika.
PS: Piwhene ke si sto thiaolo.
Whatever!
Ad'M- Before insulting the IQ of everyone on this feed, perhaps it would be better to adjust your own flawed thinking. I don't suppose it has occurred to you that nobody has set foot on the ship to even test for radiation yet. Are you suggesting that news crews should have their own navy complete with radiation detectors, just so the story is fit for your consumption.
Also, please document some sort of scientific basis for your theory on radioactive rain being magnetically drawn to abandoned vessels. While I am the first to admit that I am no expert on the subject, your "hypothysis" reeks of BS made up to "win" a pointless argument.
OK, Now go clean your bedrooms like your mommy told you to in the first place.
Had any fallout landed on this ship, it would've washed overboard long ago. Unless of course you're telling me that the thing hasn't seen any rain since it was washed out to see. I really wish people would learn a few things about fallout and radiation before making a bunch of comments. Steel vessels are incredibly resistent to radioactive contamination. Aluminum is another story. Steel is easily decontaminated with soapy water. Radiation wasn't released from the reactor. Radioactive dust was. It is heavier than air. ALMOST ALL radioactive particles are. The only radioactive isotope that's lighter than air is tritium which is an isotope of hydrogen. Without a major blast to force it into the upper atmosphere, the radioactive dust won't go any higher into the atmosphere in adequate quantities to pose any form of threat. Of course I could be wrong, I was only third in my class at the Nuclear Biological and Chemical warfare school that I attended.
This ship is the property of either the fishing company or the insurance company that provided the insurance on it. I just love how some people think they have the right to simply destroy millions of dollars of someone else's property. People telling other people what to do with their belongings is how we got into this financial mess.
Ad'M
Yet ANOTHER totally clueless person about radiation and radiation contamination.
Last time I looked on a map Canada has the biggest part of America. So don`t regard the U.S. as the only America. Mexico is part of America also.
Hand guns in Canada are smuggled in from the U.S. Can`t buy them here like you can in the U.S.
No way! Ad'M totally wrote something in Greek using the Latin alphabet! That means Ad'M wins!
The only way to defeat Ad'M is to write something in Spanish using the Cyrillic alphabet. C'mon people, we can do it!

This is week old news. Why is it still posted as a major headline? It wasn't wearing a hoodie...
That's a good one. ha ha
Must be a toyota to have lasted this long
Must have made it to the west coast because its throttle got stuck.
"Must have made it to the west coast because its throttle got stuck." You've got to be kidding! Do you really think that it takes a year for a ship to cross the Pacific with the throttle wide open? If you had read, the ship was moored, with no crew aboard, when the tsunami hit and tore it loose from it's mooring. Only an auxiliary would have been running, to provide power to the ship's electrical system. The mains would not even have been running, much less engaged and at full throttle. The auxiliary, if indeed it was running (probably was), would only have had the diesel in the day tank, the tank that holds one day's worth of fuel after it has been de-watered. Because the day tank would have been sized to hold a day's worth of diesel for the mains, which are much hungrier than the auxiliary would be, it would have run the auxiliary for more than a day, but would eventually run out. And for everyone who is advocating sinking the ship, the day tank would have only a day's worth of fuel, but the main fuel tanks could be holding thousands of gallons of diesel. Do you really want to release that into the ocean?
Heather in Washington - Oh my sweetie, he was making a joke in regards to the recall of Toyotas where the throttles got stuck.
The Japanese know how to make boats that float too. Who knew?
Coming this Summer to a Theater near YOU, James Cameron's Epic Tsunami Adventure - Ghost Ship floats across the Pacific - where you'll be subjected to 3 1/2 hours of watching a slow moving Ghost Ship float across the Pacific with some really good Musical Sound Track Scores, imagine sitting thru a 3.5 hour movie watching this thing slooowlyyyyy float across the Pacific and not much else happens - it'll be an Epic boring Adventure !! and get an Oscar Nomination without a doubt !
Or if done by Michael Bay, the same plot would happen, but the ship was originally made by aliens, the tsunami was caused by aliens, and there would be epic battles between the Ghost Ship crewmen and sea monsters, random explosions, etc. Would also be Oscar Nominated...
Probably be better and much more exciting than Tinker Tailor
Micheal Bay, lol, what a horrible director.
Its registered, so there's a record of its tonnage. Scrap steel is worth approximately $300 a ton. So if you've got a tug, marine salvage law says its yours as soon as you get it under tow. I wonder how close it has to get before somebodyburns the fuel to goe out to lay claim?
since there still may be a full tank of diesel on the wreck...it might be like way more worth going after...
ship tonnage is a measure of the weight of water displaced by the hull. You could have 1000 tons of water displaced and the weight of the steel in the vessel could be a lot less............(that's why it floats)
It`s Japanese...no wonder so rusty.
It's rusty because it has been floating at sea for a year without maintenance. Have you seen the Alaskan fleet at the end of the fishing season? There is a reason sailors spend so much time chipping, scraping and painting. Steel maintenance is an ongoing operation, and when it stops, say because the ship is washed out to sea by a tsunami without any crew aboard, the metal will immediately begin to rust. Or maybe you thought steel hulls maintain themselves?
Leave it there long enough and it'll be sucked into the garbage vortex in the middle of the pacific with everything else.
This would be so much more interesting if someone went on board to report its condition.
It's condition must be better than "complete failure" since it is still floating. From the pictures, it doesn't look like it will last much longer before it starts to sink...maybe a year or so, but likely less
According to "MarEx Newletter" the ship was searched. No bodies were on board and the ship was trashed by the sea.
Sink it and make it an reef, since the real one's are getting destroyed by humans.
Sink it near Malibu, the radiation won't make any difference there. :-)
There's a great deal of prep required before a ship can be made into an artificial reef, including removal of all oil and fuel. This process is expensive and takes months. All doors and hatches must also be removed, otherwise divers can be trapped and killed.
Stay away from the Sushi Ad'M I bet that's irradiated as well.
There seems to be a lot of knee-jerk reaction going on here. Before a ship can be sunk, it has to be thoroughly prepped. All fuel, possibly thousands of gallons, must be removed, along with any hydrocarbons (anything made from oil), such as greases, lubricants, etc. The entire ship has to be cleaned of anything, such as solvents, sealers, paints, etc. that you would not want dumped into the ocean. Unless it is sunk so deep that divers cannot dive on it, it would have to be made safe for them as well. If it were not, divers could be trapped inside and die. It would be a real tragedy if no one was killed on the ship in the initial tsunami, and then people were to die later because disposal of the ship was not well thought out. All doors and hatch covers would need to be removed, and any cables, wires or equipment that could snag or entangle a diver. All of this would be far easier to accomplish in a shipyard than it would be bobbing around out at sea, since there would be welding, torch cutting and pumping of potentially thousands of gallons of fuel. Since it can take well over a year to do all this in a shipyard, where the ship is sitting still, and there is ready access to land-based fuel pumping facilities, I can only imagine how long it would take at sea. Just remember, people, there is no such place as "away" that you can throw anything. When you throw something away, it only goes from 'here' to 'there', but not "away". When you sink a ship, it is not gone. Just because you can't see it anymore, does not mean it is not leaking thousands of gallons of diesel, which, by the way, floats, so although you can no longer see the ship, the diesel is on top of the water for all to sample, including sea life.
recover it and send it home.
Interesting, it's kind of neat to imagine what kind of travels it had. I also thought of that creepy movie, Ghost Ship when I read that title.
Wasn't there an episode of the Twilight Zone about a ghost ship, as well? I enjoyed the movie you mentioned as well.
I don't understand why the United States Navy doesn't use it as target practice, for its young officers to hone in, on their skills. Just launch one each cruise missle. Or better yet, try to turn it around somehow, and orient it towards North Korea, and let the North Koreans, and the Japanese fight over it. Or just take control of it, and sell it back to the Japanese Government.
I like the idea of sending it to north korea...
Why would the US Navy have jurisdiction? Doesn't the article say it is off the coast of Canada?
becaue it is in Canadian waters, not u s
Hell yeah, let's just shoot anything that isn't ours.
So was it just discovered, or has it been out there so that any cruise ship could have crashed into it ?
Both.
too far from Italian Cruise ship travel lanes so it was safe.
I would hope that a cruise ship would have better radar than to let that happen. If a cruise ship can't detect another ship, I would hate to book a cruise on it.
I am surprised that noone has laid salvage claim to the ship as yet. Many of the comments show the lack of understanding as to what makes something "radioactive" as well.
Guess they got the insurance money and do not want it back.
In that case the insurance company would own it.
So many tired comments.
1. Loose ship? - wrangle it and get it to a safe place
2. Fuel on Board - drag it to a salvage yard pump it out
3. Salvage the iron
4. Don't even consider sinking it - Petroleum pollutes (remember Exxon Valdez and BP?)
Fun sponge.....
Should be a good advertisement for Japanese shipbuilding...surviving a tsunami and drifting all the way across the Pacific, motorless, and without capsizing.
Someone smart ought to salvage it and turn it into a private yacht...
I completely agree. Would be surprised if someone isn't already planning to salvage it. Just because it doesn't look like much on the outside, doesn't mean it's not a sound ship. The owner knows where it is by now. They could easily sell the salvage rights to anyone interested, if there is still an ownership issue. If nothing else, it looks like the scrap might be worth enough to make a profit.
Yeah John I heard Costa Crusie is going to turn it into one of their new cruise ships.
It is special boat so they should put some sign of peace and love on top of that boat.
That ship would make a great houseboat once renovated.
A houseboat for many! I like that idea!
MR LAVOIE, I feel that someone should apologize for the ignorant and uninformed and embarrasing comments that have been made in regards to our neighbor to the north. The Canadians have been true allies in every sense of the word. So, when it comes to the ignorant remarks from unlightened dimwits like Scopata Messico, Mike Thompson 5564623, and Yoyobunch (who's first four letters of his/her accronymn explains alot!) and the likes of them just shake your head and know that some people you can teach and enlighten and some are just born that way and nothing or no one can help them.
rekoop - Thank you for expressing it so well. Canada is a great friend of the United States, and yet so many Americans sneer at Canada. I guess the expression is true, you can cure ignorance, but stupidity is for life. I'm glad that not all Americans hold Canada in such low regard. Good friends should be treated well, and I'm glad I'm not a friend of those who treat Canada poorly. My only hope is that at least some of the posters are simply ignorant, and that perhaps they are learning. The stupid ones, we will just have to tolerate, and apologize for them.
Well if it wern't for OBAMACARE and the other liberals in this country, we could've saved the Japanese from this disaster and that boat wouldn't have come all the way to America. Nice going, potus.
