A Japanese fishing boat that was lost at sea after the 2011 tsunami has been found off the coast of B.C.

Vancouver Sun reports: VANCOUVER -- After being flushed out to sea by last year’s massive tsunami and earthquake, a Japanese squid-fishing boat has drifted across the Pacific Ocean and was about 120 nautical miles off British Columbia’s north coast Friday evening. The 150-foot ship was found drifting right-side-up about 140 nautical miles (260 km) from Cape Saint James, on the southern tip of Haida Gwaii.

“It’s been drifting across the Pacific for a year, so it’s pretty beat up,” said marine search coordinator Jeff Olsson of Victoria’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

A ship unmoored by the 2011 tsunami has arrived near British Columbia's north coast. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

If I was in the market for a boat, that would be the one I'd want... Set out to sea in a tsunami, drifting across the pacific for a year, through who knows what kind of weather and other obstacles, and it's still right side up? I would feel safe on that vessel...

If this ship has crossed the Pacific with no one at the wheel - Maybe captaining a ship isnt as hard as they say.

                In Response to ...

KINGOFZED - No one in Canada has a gun? That is far far far from the truth. They just have responsible gun laws that stop people from running around with guns like cowboys/thugs and shooting other people and themselves.

I am so tired of the leftest ideology. The people you are referring to here cowboys/thugs carry illegal guns and don't obey the laws. If you think for one minute that in this country by having more and more gun laws will stop illegal guns from getting in the hands of thugs you are ignorant. There are millions of guns in the US today and 99% are owned by law abiding citizens who own simply for protection should the need arise or for hunting...I being one of them. Criminals already have illegal guns and will continue whether there are more laws or not but it's it a comforting thought to know when in your home and one of these thugs tries to invade...you can politely give them a different outlook. If you don't like guns move to England or someplace where they have basically taken them from all LAW abiding citizen and see what there crime rate is. It has skyrocketed since they have done so. Canada may not experience it so badly but I certainly do not want to attempt it here in the US. Hitler knew the value of more gun laws, perhaps you should get understanding also...Enjoy your day!!!!!

My sister married a Canadian who happens to be a red blooded, gun toting, hunting, fishing maniac. She's lived in Canada so long she now says "I'm going ootside....aye"! Canadians own plenty of guns and know how to use them quite well thank you very much. I have a lot of affection for Canadians who have plenty of capacity to defend themselves! Put your butt out on an ice rink and play a little hockey with a Canadian. Let's see how tough you really are.

Just let the boat run into Canada. It probably won't hit - or hurt - anything.

The ship is a symbol of survival. It's also symbolic of Japanese quality/workmanship and a symbol of perseverance and resilience. It should be salvaged/cleaned up, and then turned into a kind of monument. It could be brought to a decent sized community on Canada's west coast (maybe Tofino) or a larger centre such as Victoria or Vancouver (giving more people access to it), and serve as a tourist destination (I would definitely want to see this ship, considering its dramatic story). Proceeds could go partly to tsunami disaster relief (there are still thousands of displaced Japanese), and partly to the local host community. It would be a great example of international goodwill and friendship. Kizuna.

Great idea, Tensai69! I would love to see it myself and am sure others would feel the same way. It's definately a symbol of endurance. Name it "Resilience"...

This ship makes an amazing impression! With all the death and destruction that was caused by that horrible event, this ship survived and continues on--just like the Japanese people who survived have done.

It's unbelievable isn't it? I mean my God how one track minded are these people? It must be some kind of living hell to have no other thought in your head or interest other than bi partisan politics. Gun control,no gun control..how in the hell did a ship adrift at sea stir thoughts of guns and politics? If these people are that fixated on that one issue that they can't converse about anything not even closely related to the subject... they really need some form of medical treatment or an exorcism!

And of course they imediately start in on Canada as if they are some inferior nation. Meanwhile...exactly what makes Canada inferior to the U.S.? The fact that they live in relative political and financial harmony? Or that they are not so internationally overbearing and insulting that they have spread ill will all over the globe and back? Or the fact that they don't run off to attack anybody who looks at them wrong!

And... Canada doesn't have guns or an airforce? My God...have any of these people ever heard of going to Canada to hunt or ever heard of the RAF? These ignorants need to take a look at Canadas military history,of course they won't care about that since they presently won't run off and shoot at everything that moves because it annoys them.LOL.

I still can't believe the comments from my fellow Americans. Makes me want to move to Canada and pretend ignorance isn't running rampant. I would love to live there - in the summer. :-) I'd renounce my citizenship if I could find a warm place to winter. And I already have an Ontarian accent!:-)

It's not a tanker, there can't be that much oil on the boat. The ocean floor 'leaks' more oil in a day than could be on a fishing boat. Now, I'm not saying DON'T try to empty it first... I'm all for keeping the environment clean... just that in the overall scheme of things, it won't make a difference. It isn't the Exxon Valdez that'll put oil all over every bird and mammal in the Pacific Rim.

I prefer to believe that Godzilla killed all aboard. All that will be found when someone boards the ship will be a pair of severed hands clinging to the capstan.

It would be cool to sink it and create a new reef.

Tow it in to a salvage yard and let someone make some money. It's abandoned.
