A volunteer from the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) emerges from a mobile veterinary clinic with a dead pit bull after being euthanized, April 3, 2012 at a coffee farm lot in San Pablo city, Laguna province, south of Manila, Philippines. Dozens of pit bulls, rescued from a dogfighting ring were euthanized by the animal welfare activists who said there are no facilities to rehabilitate them and prevent them from again being used in underground arenas.
AP reports: Veterinarians and animal welfare workers Tuesday euthanized at least nine pit bulls rescued from a dogfighting ring in the Philippines because there are no facilities to rehabilitate them and prevent them from again being used in underground arenas.
The plan is to put down dozens of the roughly 300 dogs rescued in separate raids late Friday in Laguna province south of Manlia, said Anna Cabrera of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society. Seventeen had been put to sleep a day after the raids.
The health of the living dogs and the progress of rehabilitating them will determine how many of them ultimately survive.
Police arrested eight South Koreans suspected of running an illegal online gambling operations in which players outside the Philippines bet on dogs fighting at a clandestine compound. Full story.

I still say that any people that fight dogs should be chained together and forced to fight to the death.
amen to that
Amen amen, amen to that
You obviously know ZERO about "dog fighting". Dogs are not forced to do anything (in a real dog match, not gangster wannabe dog fights). The dogs are in the ring, and if one dog doesn't cross the line to get to the other dog, the fight is over. If one of the dogs stops fighting, or jumps out of the ring, the fight is over. Pit Bull Terriers do not need to be "taught" to fight. It has been bred into them for hundreds of years to be Human friendly but dog agressive. The only people "chaining dogs together til they fight to the death" are wanna be thugs, no real dogman would ever do that. A dead dog cannot continue to produce champion opffspring, so that makes no sense.
oh so they "rescued" them so they could euthanize them? so sad...
In a related story, Ping's Diner has offered to take all the rescued dogs and guarantees they will be well fed.
At least the poor animals aren't suffering anymore. If they were damaged, injured, not receiving medical care, they were suffering. One can take an injured pit bull and rehabilitate them. But not 300 of them. sad to say, at least they aren't hurting. I used to be a nurse in long term care/hospice. And there ARE things worse than death, for humans and dogs.
Euthanasia is much better than dogfighting. If you can't see that , you are blind.
Ping's Diner would probably put them on their menu and serve dog meat. Death isn't cruel. Life is. These poor dogs are better off dead.
the Koreans were betting on them...the Phlips want to eat them...these poor things never stood a chance.
What kind of rescue was this??? pathetic, but then again what did you expect from the Philippines.. you cant call this a rescue, this is a slaughter. I hope that island sinks completely.
D. Urbanski only countries with our kind of resources can afford to be as sympathetic to animals as we are, when you live on a dollar a day you cant afford sympathy. This part of the world doesent share our values because they cant afford to. A hundred years ago the same thing would be true for our country as well. So please get off your high horse and at least be happy something was done for those poor animals.
It is the best they can do! At least the dogs won't be suffering anymore! At least during their last hours/days they will be loved and cared for and hopefully a few will find homes where they are loved and cared for. Would you rather they were NOT rescued and left in the conditions they were living in?
D. Urbanski, you want to think the Philippines is backwards or somehow different than the U.S. but it's not. Most shelters in the U.S. euthanize fighting pits without any thought to attempts to rehabilitate them. It is standard operating procedure. Remember Michael Vick's dogs? Best Friends Animal Society in Utah had to petition the court to try to save the dogs and allow it the opportunity to rehabilitate them. The Judge surprisingly agreed, most of those dogs have been rehabilitated and adopted, but the hoops BFAS, the adopters and the dogs had to go through were ridiculous.
Pits are the most euthanized dog in the U.S. We are unfortunately no different than the Philippines in this regard.
D. Grow up. Would you rather the dogs still were fighting and maiming one another ?
There's nothing wrong with any breed of dog. It's humans that are the problem.
Maybe some international rescue group can step up to the plate and try to help them. So sad seeing pictures of happy sweet dogs that have been "rescued" only to scroll through the pictures down to the article and read that they're all gonna be put down. :(
Animals in the US don't have it very well either. When you have seen hundreds of calves in veal cages, puppy mills everywhere in Iowa, chickens in cages, they have to debeak because they are so crowded they peck each other, hogs in pork containment facilities. The US is supposedly so humane towards their animals, but puppy mill breeder dogs are in the same cage for life, until they can't get bred anymore, never leaving the cage, having puppies over and over and over, until they die, or are rescued.
I refuse to eat veal, just because I do not believe in veal cages. A newborn male calf is put in a veal cage, not allowed to move, fed milk all the time, having diarrhea due to too much milk, nobody cleans it up, his whole rear end is covered with dried diarrhea, taken out of the cage, unable to walk, pushed and yelled at to try to walk, taken to a slaughter house, and killed so we can have nice grayish pale veal cutlets. Of course, my refusal to eat it, doesn't do any good. Veal is very popular in our country.
Willow, your refusal to eat veal does do good. I also do not eat veal. God never intended animals to be treated this way as part of our massive food industry. We have learned much about the value of animals and we will continue to bring light to these atrocities while others fight to continue them. Whether it is treatment of animals for food or violence of the dogfighting culture, those who perpetuate this treatment will not succeed. Stand your ground on your beliefs and I will stand right next to you.
I don't eat veal and I do my best to not eat any store bought meat, but sometimes I have no choice. I do, however raise my own chickens so I know what kind of treatment they get. Only the best for my chickens. The layers have heat in the winter and plenty of light. They are allowed out every day except for when the temperatures drop down below freezing. They have several acres to wander around. I have even given up on the idea of having a nice lawn or any type of flowers because my girls dig them up...I also raise meat king chickens and while I don't free range them like I do the layers, they are treated well, their LARGE pen is kept clean. Plenty of sawdust in their coop which is cleaned often. They get grass and alders in their pen so while they aren't loose they get the benefit of scratching and eating greenery. It may not make a HUGE different in the whole scheme of things, but it makes a difference in MY world.
Sounds idyllic for a chicken, really, kkatt. And it does make a difference, every bit makes a difference. I don't eat veal either and only eat cage free, organic eggs. If everyone made this small sacrifice, it would make a huge difference.
Are they planning on placing some of the pits for adoption? Does anyone know?
This is one of the reason's why this breed get a bad rap. The owners should be euthanzied instead of the dogs.
What a horrible story. I mean it's reality, but I wish the headline had been different. I avoid stories like this on purpose and I thought I was going to see a good feeling story about the dogs. Very misleading. Some of us are sensitive to animal issues and I would not have looked at this if I had known they were all going to be murdered.
I have a pit bull that someone dumped out here in the country in Colorado. He's one of the best dogs I've ever had, and we're going on 3 years together. He was 37 lbs when I brought him home and now he's 72 lbs. He gets along well with the other dogs and my horses. This story was sickening.
