The Hindu reports: Ms. Reshma had said that her husband Umar Farook, who had wanted a boy child, had physically abused the child, and had attempted to kill her in the preceding days. When she was brought in she had suffered haemorrhages in her brain and retina, and had multiple bite marks on her thighs and cigarette burn marks on her body. Since Tuesday, Afreen, who was already on ventilator support, went into a semi-comatose state following two convulsions. Full story.

No this is not the norm in the Islamic religion....And thank you yourmothersir for realizing that it is cultural, not religious based. On the Discovery channel I saw in Indiain the Hindu religion where people gather around a home of a new born/relatively young child. An adult throws the baby from the second floor down to that gathered crowd to be caught. In their relgion they believe it will bring the baby Good Luck for being caught....My question is what is it called if the baby isn't caught.......Bad Luck OR MURDER ?

From what I gather, and I apologize if I am wrong with pieces here and there, but a lot of the people over there kill the girls bc it costs to much to marry them off. It is tradition that they have huge ceremonies and the families cant afford them. The mothers sometimes leave their husbands to protect their baby girls and sometimes the mother sides with the decision. There is a shelter there that takes these precious little babies and girls and prepares them for life thank God. Even the clinics that the woman go to for ultrasounds the Dr.s there suggest an abortion. It is illegal to ask for the Gender of the child but people still do it. I watched it on 20/20 and you can google it. It is very sad.
onawa, you are right, I have heard about that. With the next phase in our melting pot, he same situation is now happening in the US. And ties into my comments on the late term abortion law being presented in Arizona. Girls in most of the world are not valued. Even among the "civilized" European culture in the US, men often prefer boy children. But, thankfully, very few take out their disappointment on their daughters. I am all for people remembering "from whence they came", but some cultural ideas need to be forgotten.
I've heard from Indians who have told me the same thing. It's really sad.
What do we expect from a fifth class third world country that values a Penis more than a human life. This is the true India where a female human is considered lower than a donkey. I may have to work with these clowns but I don't have to respect them.
This is the epitome of uncivilized ignorance. Some countries and peoples are stuck in the dark ages. We cannot change them, they must change themselves. Not unlike some of our citizens who cannot seem to rise above their bigotry. It is all ignorance.

while I agree that some people are ignorant. Your comment about bigotry would also need to include yourself since this sort of occurrence is cultural. With this definition and a situation like this, where the culture of a person guides a horrendous deed, I guess we are all a little bigoted.
The guy is in custody, this isn't an issue of culture. It's an issue of ignorance.
Culture is when something is socially acceptable among your peers. If this was culturally acceptable he would not be in jail.

Why isn't someone telling these men that the power is in their own body - they are the ones carrying the "Y" chromosome that should bear the blame because they aren't supplying the right chromosome for their wife or wives to bear males! Is this just a simple case of ignorance and lack of education; or is the cultural construct so strong that people do not want to acknowledge this physiological fact? I'm really trying to understand the logic. This is no different than medieval and renaissance ages when queens and/or female consorts were under so much pressure to bear sons t inherit thrones or paternal legacy.

What angers me is that it is the father's sperm and not the mother's egg that decides the sex of the baby. This guy should be beating himself to death for fathering a girl.
Is the cultural construct so strong that men of certain societies don't want to believe or understand that physiologically THEY are the ones responsible for whether or not their wife (or wives) bear sons? That they are the carriers of the "Y" chromosome necessary for this to happen? Or is it ignorance and lack of education? I wonder if education in the villages and tribal societies would make a difference. A female baby being abused or killed because she was born a girl - a fact of nature beyond her control - is inexcusable!

I wasn't able to have children, boy or girl. I'd have taken the little girl in a heartbeat. If you don't want her, India men, because she's a girl, send her to a childless mother in the US. We'll take her.
