Good for the protestors.

The U.S. influence in South and Central America has resulted in more poverty and misery for the people there.

Emperor Obama's comment about not ignoring the "neighbors" sounds ominous to me.

Major General Smedley Butler (USMC) fought in WWI, Haiti, Nicaruaga, Mexico and Cuba in the early part of the 1900's. He recieved the Congressional Medal of Honour twice as well as many other decorations. Here is a speech he gave to the American Legion convention in 1933:

Smedley Butler on Interventionism

War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses. I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else. If a nation comes over here to fight, then we'll fight. The trouble with America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag. I wouldn't go to war again as I have done to protect some lousy investment of the bankers. There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights. War for any other reason is simply a racket. There isn't a trick in the racketeering bag that the military gang is blind to. It has its "finger men" to point out enemies, its "muscle men" to destroy enemies, its "brain men" to plan war preparations, and a "Big Boss" Super-Nationalistic-Capitalism. It may seem odd for me, a military man to adopt such a comparison. Truthfulness compels me to. I spent thirty- three years and four months in active military service as a member of this country's most agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle- man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I suspected I was just part of a racket at the time. Now I am sure of it. Like all the members of the military profession, I never had a thought of my own until I left the service. My mental faculties remained in suspended animation while I obeyed the orders of higher-ups. This is typical with everyone in the military service. I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912 (where have I heard that name before?). I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested. During those years, I had, as the boys in the back room would say, a swell racket. Looking back on it, I feel that I could have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.

    Like the "related article" states:

But the Harvard-educated Santos, who came to power in 2010, has improved relations with Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez and put Colombia on course to become a diplomatic conduit between the United States and Latin America's leftist governments. Under Santos, Colombia may assume a regional mediator role usually reserved for South American giant Brazil.

Woweee, a University reunion between Obama and Santos. Wait a minute, Santos has "improved relations" with Chavez. Wait another minute, did Mr. Obama read the book about circumventing Capitalism which Chavez gave him ?

Oh, this is about a summit for the Americas and not about things like reunions or books, that is why these folks are burning that mock flag.

I can hardly wait to hear how much taxpayer dollars are going to be given to Colombia by Mr. Obama for "oil exploration" or "drug extradiction".

Like I said before (don't know what happened to that post), this is wasted energy in the wrong direction! Why don't these students exert their anger at the murderous cartels that have ruined the image of that country!!?

Possibly because they are too scared of the cartels to protest against them, and too scared of their own government too, so they protest against the U.S. instead, they know its pretty safe to do so, everybody does it and burn our flag.

AND it's because of the American's public demand for illegal drugs that cartels exist and are profitable.

You should clarify under those pictures that you know that isn't exactly an American flag. Just a suggestion.

      #2.3 - Fri Apr 13, 2012 10:49 PM EDT

Well, America has no flag (it's a continent, not a state or country). If you are referring to the flag of the USA, then by all means, that's just an artist's conception.

Oh for God's sake, we all know the artist's conception represents the United States flag, as surely as the artist's conception of the Statue of Liberty in Iran represents the Statue of Liberty.

By "americans" I am guessing you mean all americans, i.e. North America and South America, including columbian citizens.

And while it surely would be great if everyone stopped using drugs (which may not be as simple as you think, there is drugs users even in countries where they get the death penalty for it), it would also be great if Columbians protested against their own government for being so corrupted and letting drug cartels become so powerful, but of course its easier and safer to protest against the other guys' government.

I'm sorry but while I agree that this country (the U.S.) is not perfect (which country is?), I also think that some people tend to blame the U.S. for their own corrupted governments, and everything they don't like in their own country, and this is total BS.

and is swastikas on a pseudo-American flag supposed to actually warrant a connection? Seems more like a confused Muslim crowd's rhetoric.

Seriously??? So, thinking that the almighty "American" people determine what freedom should be for the rest of the world, is not at all connected to any ideas from Nazi movement whatsoever.

Your absolutely biased comment about Muslims is not in any form attacking people's right to freedom of religion. (because you think that the muslim= non-english speaker, but if 2% of your population knows a second language then you might be in luck.)

By the way... AMERICA extends from the top of CANADA to the tip of the Patagonia in Argentina. And said CONTINENT has no flag.

Annie maybe you should calm down about this "american" issue, everybody knows that people living in North America and South America are also called americans, just like all people living in Africa are called africans, we just say "american" because its easier to say then "unitedstatestian".

Let them complain. we will just take our money and task forces else where, and in 3 years when their currency is human teeth, and the cartels have executed half them we can offer to fix their problems, for a slight fee

I have spent extensive time in Latin America, it is always illuminating to me when I see the surprise on the faces of estadounidenses when we are villified in other countries. The difference between us and them is they know when they are being fed propoganda, we don't. But it still isn't enough, when we are villified, people think we are being misrepresented, we aren't. In reality, you all are completely ignorant to what we are doing in Latin America, especially during the Rayguns administration in the 80's. Wake up. We have tried to manipulate the entire western hemisphere to fit our needs, go Monroe Doctrine!

Well BG you ought to relocate to Venezuela then where you will be appreciated for your hatred of the US.

Without the Monroe Doctrine and the courage of presidents like Reagan, most of Central and South America would be satellites of the Soviet Union that would still be seeking to destroy the US.

Or maybe you do prefer groups like the FMLN that came into the village in El Salvador where my wife was a child and kept kidnapping the young people to forcing them into guerrilla service?

Or maybe you preferred the White Russians helping marxist guerrillas in Guatemala to rob, rape, and murder tourists on buses?
