Mass Quinceanera thrown in Mexico City

Fifteen-year-old girls pose for a group picture at the Franz Mayer museum before a mass Quinceanera birthday celebration in Mexico City, April 28.

Three-hundred forty-eight girls dressed up for their 15th (Quinceanera) birthday celebration, a tradition dating back to the Spanish colonial era when 15- and 16-year-old girls had their official debut in society. The Quinceanera marks the transition from childhood to adulthood and is common in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries.

The last picture is very touching, with the girl in the evening gown in a wheelchair with the other young ladies.....Felicitations to all the young women. I hope they all work for a better future for a wonderful country which has been going through some very difficult years.

Meanwhile in Mexico... "3 die in drug related shootings..."... "Child kidnapped and held for ransom..."... "4 people arrested while attempting to cross the boarder into The United Stated" ... "2 more dead in drug related shootings..."

Stop with the fluff news, this is meant for the entertainment section, this is not news, I don't wake up in the morning to read about someone's birthday, I want to know if I'm going die when I walk out the door from a terrorist attack, weaponized birdflu, and so on.

So all there is to life is negativity? You're such a sad, little person. Look around, there's a lot more joy out there if you actually open your eyes and start living your life, instead of living in fear of the next sad 'event'. You sound like a zombie, just going through the motions, waiting to die.

From your post, I gather you complain every time your local newspaper publishes the details of a coming out party or a debutante ball. I suggest you take your blanket, go back under the bed, and leave the normal people alone.

I live in Mexico (Yank retired) and can honestly tell you I feel safer here than I do with the shootings, stabbings, and other murders back home. Can´t you allow these women their one day of joy without having to be so negative?

Sería un mundo más bello si todos pudieran disfrutarse por un día como ellas. ¡Felicidades, mujeres bellísimas!

And meanwhile, in Winter Haven, Florida, a man shot 3 college students leaving 2 dead and one critically wounded, and he did this in front of his 7-year-old daughter. All of this supposedly over drugs that turned out not to be there. And there are always stories here about home-grown meth labs being raided in this county. So if you want to look for criminals, you'll find them in your own backyard. I think this is a beautiful story of these girls; the pictures are gorgeous, and it's a refreshing change from the "if it bleeds, it leads" philosophy of news stories, especially when it's something having to do with Mexico. So to "Notschitzo," I've got news for you: yes, it's not safe out there, but if you're that afraid, you should hide under your bedcovers and never come out. But you will miss a lot of the joy and beauty that's out there because you might have to take a small risk.

It's hard to remember being 15 in the US..lol. Congratulations to the government of Mexico. This truly is what your people need to bring them together. I love the colorful gowns. But even more the joy in those pretty, young faces of the future of Mexico. More, more, more positive journalism is what we need.

Just think. In a decade from now, one of them might be Mexico's first female president. I'd bet anything Mexico gets their first female president before the US ever does.

Terrorist attack?

Possible I guess.

And so on?

There are a lot of options.

Weaponized Bird Flu?

Even using a grenade launcher, do you have any idea how fast they would have to shoot a bird just to hurt you?

Go ahead – picture that in you mind…

madcitizen...Mexican American women are NO different than American born women. We all know how stupid men are these days. Most men walk around with asses and chins dragging on the ground, whining, griping, snarking, pushing, shoving and acting like the Second Coming of the Neanderthals.

Yes, like the U.S., there are 15 year old girls that have babies. However, in one generation the average size of a Mexican family has dropped from 4 - 5 children to between 1 and 2. More women are becoming educated and have careers just as in the U.S. and other places in the world. The entry of Mexican women into the workplace as professionals is nothing short of amazing. 45 years ago when I met the woman who would become my wife, there were no Mexican women who were professionals. Today there are more Mexican women graduating from college than men.

Now, I can tell you something, not only in foreign Countries young kids are having sex, right here in USA lots of young kids (boys and girls) as young 3-4 years old are being exploited by adults, so, before you open your dirty mouth to insult decent kids celebrating their birthdays, washed your mouth with clorox... idiot...and if you watch TV, you will know that, there are one too many Americans teenagers, young as 11 years old having babies, and are supported by their parents and/or by the welfare services...

I am shocked at the many hateful and one racist remarks directed towards them. Some people are just so negative they have to spread it around their world. Please don't let them get you down. They have a depressive world outlook and can't help it. The one that is fearful does concern me bkz they might need help. Please just ignore them & stay positive. Thank you & thanks to Mexico for making this beautiful day for the young women.

They STILL can't get back into the Secret Service rooms for ANY reason now. Barry Obummer has taken care of that. 15 years old means they are legal for the streets...... right? That's what my neighbor says, and he has 6 daughters and he is always broke. Just look at the dresses they made for themselves, the fabric must have been a fortune. According to Rodolfo, his daughters 15th costs him a minimum of $2,500/ea. That's a new set of 21's and a wash 'n wax each and every time this comes around. BTW, has ANY of those girls ever thought of getting rid of the tortilla roll? Rollie's girls don't have that problem, they are all nice and thin, trim and healthy, and NONE of them have gotten pregnant b-4 this celebration.

                    Blastin-Nancy,

I feel sorry for you, your ignorance it is unbeliavable! just to let you know, in South America, Mexico, Spain and othr foreing Countries, the woman must learn everything , from scratch, cook, sewing, ironing, and take care of the house and kids, and the conditions are not easy as US for that matter, some houses still have iron stoves to burn wood for cooking, and 100% of mother on that 15th birthday party, were made by the girls own mother, however, I bet that you do not know how to sew a botton on you dress, so why open you mouth?

How do I know? I am from South America, and my mother made my 15th birthday dress, and it was gorgeous, I was proud and very happy! and I do my own dresses myself, like a professional dress maker... how about you?

P.S. if there are any mispelling, my apologies, I am a foreigner, but at least I can read and write, unlike some people can not even spell their names...

It amazes me how people can see other people celebrating and enjoying life then slam them with negative and ignorant comments. It says more about their own pathetic existence and need for professional help (or maybe a nice cold cup of humanity) than it gives any insight into this particular event.
