AP reports -- SALT LAKE CITY -- A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency order will require two of Utah's oldest coal-fired power plants to improve control of pollution that has drastically reduced visibility across a region that includes five national parks and redrock wilderness.
Pollution controls at a pair of PacifiCorp power plants in Emery County "do not comply with our regulations," EPA Regional Administrator James Martin wrote earlier this week in the 79-page order. He signed out the 34- and 42-year-old plants for improvement, rejecting Utah's less stringent pollution controls but upholding broader efforts by the state to reduce haze across southern Utah.
PacifiCorp said it was already upgrading pollution controls at the Hunter and Huntington power plants and planned more improvements by 2014 that would bring them into compliance with the new requirements.

Jude: L. Frank Baum was after the fear-mongering Corporate Veil, long before the majority of "us" were born. I accept that awareness does not endure for more than one generation, but I sincerely hope that others will read "the fine print" and the "lessons between the lines", for these are the only expression of the people who foresee the results of others' blind interpretations.
No wonder the "Powell Manifesto" sought to curtail "academic freedom". Without unfettered critical thinking and its attendantly mindful, analytical penchant for broad education, we're nothing but straws in the wind.
It's sad how little thought goes into this subject, "all emotion" Most of the pollution in Utah parks come from Nevada and California. Check out weather patterns and jet stream flows. Tests have shown this to be true. Modern coal fired power plants provide alot of power and little emissions. It's people in cars stupid.
He will ruin those ruining the earth.
The dismantling of America.
Stop buying Chinese products. The amount of coal they are burning is increasing rapidly.
You are so right. While we passed strict regulations that forced many to move production to China they just increased their coal consumption. Their air eventually becomes our air. So what did we actually accomplish other than to sabotage our economy?
this country has more than it's fair share of complete idiotic morons and a story like this just provides proof as such. Who in their right mind would even want to disband the EPA? It's the only government agency that attempts to look after our future generation's interest. Let the tea baggers breathe their bad air in their living rooms... otherwise, go EPA! Make the polluters accountable and/or close em down
The EPA was needed at one point in time, but now that things are cleaned up, the only thing these new regulations serve is to push businesses overseas. They are looking out for job security instead of looking out for us. Roll back regulations to 1999 standards. Things were fine back then.
Soon it will be too hazy to see the crucifixes.
That should change a lib's mind. You're brilliant!
I wonder how much of the haze is dust. I have a hard time believing that just two power plants are responsible. They have been operating for decades, but now they are a problem?
Now there looms on the horizon an incredibly important election. Utah can be sacraficed to show the uber left that the administration is doing their bidding.
Don't you find it strange that this "haze" just became a problem? I think it has more to do with dust, jet stream and the fact that the EPA has been filled with a bunch of environmental wackos by the Obama administration. If you liberals really want to get rid of carbon based fuels then you better stock up on horses, dig a water well and built your outhouse. I think it's amazing that liberals call themselves "progressive" when they want to take us back to the stone ages. We should rename them the "Chicken Little" party.
Hey EPA go fly a kite your killing this country.
You do not understand.
That is their intent.
If you want to see what coal powered plants are producing, get in a small boat without a motor, and ease up on sandy sections of creeks and rivers. In many places you can see tiny balls of mercury on the sandy bottom. I've covered over half of the river system running from Rome, Georgia, to Fairhope, Alabama, and on every section of the river between dams they were present in places. Coal fired plants are believed to have killed a large number of pecan, and other trees in Texas and other states. Even the new clean coal plants have only reduced their pollutants by 50%. According to a guy working on the problem, they have the technowlegy to do even better. So, why do we hear whining every time the EPA gets on to those who haven't implemented even the older techniques? Perhaps it's because dividents are more important than our health. On most of the river system I've covered there are warnings in place ranging from eating a very small amount of fish a week, and none from fish above a certain size, to not eating any fish caught in that area. If you honestly think about it, our pollutants are making our lives a lot more dangerous than we should have to accept. Tell you what, go down to the Gulf of Mexico and load up on seafood. It's been tainted by the rather large oil spill a few years back. The percentage of mutated seafood has drasticly increased since that incedent.
Mark,
I for one do not doubt your claims, something has to be done to reduce air and water contamination, especially over wide areas. But I myself do not trust the federal EPA to dictate the solution, there are far too many with extremist views in authority. Why don't the fed EPA try working with particular state legislatures to solve the problem ?
Welcome folks to another media side show to keep your attention off the economy. Don't want people thinking we can develop economically and create employment opportunities. Heck Romney might get elected then. Better to keep peoples attention on a narrow focus. The democrats are attempting to get the right to choose, the gays, the tree huggers, etc. to focus on their narrow stand to marshal enough fringe folks to get Obama elected again. Never mind the mainstream American folks who want a good job to buy a good home to raise a good family, and eat good food. After all they are ruining the world. Stupid normal people.
Though I support democrats on many current issues, I am opposed to ignoring illegal immigration and the notion that Congress is dominate over state legislatures. Except for the list of enumerated powers granted to Congress in Article 1, section 8, of the US Constitution, all other powers are reserved to the states, and, or people, as is verified in the 10th amendment.
Nobody likes smog, myself included, but it is not within the power of the federal government to order a state to do something about anything that is not interstate in nature. It is the duty of residents of a particular state to force change.
And the idea there are five 'National' parks in Utah is hogwash, there can be state, but no national parks in any state, clarified in Article 1, Section 8, sub paragraph 17 of the US Constitution.
The confusion over who has legislative authority over state lands arose because Congress neglected to cede legislative authority over all lands and things native when territories became member states of the union. These new states were to receive the same legislative powers and immunities as the thirteen original states had, but Congress unconstitutionally neglected to surrender these legislative powers.
Again, Congress only has legislative powers over things of an interstate nature, things which affect those of more than one state. And we need to get that straightened out......In the mean time, power to the 99%ers
Privatize profits and socialize losses. This is just another way to do it. Health care cost will always be picked up by the suckers down wind or stream. Remember living on the wrong side of the tracks? The coal dust all over everything? Same thing.
"I'll pave the entire United States if it means jobs" - President Bush (GOP)
Yes this is big government that plastic Romney and the tea baggers are trying to remove.
I for one will vote the GOP party into irrelevance every year of my life until I die.
Does the EPA plan on sending China a cease and desist order when their smog crosses over the ocean. And what about all that Japanese earthquake crap on the west coast.....do they plan on telling the Japanese they have to clean it all up?
I'm thinking of becoming a Democrat.
I like the idea of living in Denial, LaLaLand. I can ignore real issues and blame the world's problems on someone else. Meanwhile I can sit back and wait for the government to send me a check each month using money taken from Republicans who work for a living. Then I can drive my electric car, with batteries made from sand, to the store to buy meat from animals who are never killed and vegetables that are produced organically without the use of any electricity, tractors, trucks or any petroleum products whatsoever! I can ignore the fact that, while we all do our part here in the good old USA, China is dumping pollution into the air and the water and cheap products into our economy. We will make them rich because money isn't important in my life. I will get it from someone else. Even if China ends up buying up our country, I can relax because I know that St. Barack will lead us to the PROMISE LAND !!
The power generation company has already agreed with this! They are retro fitting a 42 year old plant for gods sake! Many companies would de commission it! I don't see the State of Utah objectin; they certainly know that the future of tourism is worth way more than a couple of out dated power plants. The fact is that coal is probably the most polluting fossil fuel on earth and if we are going to continue to use it, we need to do a better job of scrubbing the emmissions.
Yesterday I heard that Exxon was planning to drill so deep it would touch the "earth's mantle" I believe that plan would be in water 3 or more times than BP's. None of them have yet perfected emergency plans that would avoid or contain any oil spills, but the company's plowing ahead with it. We have people whose "water" catches on fire when the turn on their faucets and numerous earth tremors in cities or counties where fracking is taking place. The natural oil companies are pumping billions of gallons of water and chemicals into the earth to get to those natural gas deposits. In the gulf they have found shrimp with no eyes, that when they are cut open, they smell like they have rotted within. We have frogs without legs or more than the normal four they have. Recently thousands of fish have washed up on shores. They put a canary in mines to warn of the dangers. Maybe these are our warning signs. When we finally succeed in ruining this earth, where will we go? When we can't breathe the air or eat the food because of contamination, what's the next step?
Why doesn't oboz offer the coal industry - companies subsidies like they GAVE to Solyndra? We're at least a decaade away from any viable alternative energy resource. We have something like 400+ years of coal reserves; 200+ years of natural gas and 150+ years of oil reserves.
We need these fossil fuels until someone in the PRIVATE SECTOR developes the technology. But coal doesn't fit into obozo and the radical eco-loon left's agenda so F our coal industry and continue make us pay more for coal and gasoline.
Obozo and Al "convenient liar" Gore are responsible for spewing more "methane" in the atmosphere than any company.
You do realize that Solyndra was in the works before Obama, don't you? That was Bush's idea and Obama went along with it (mistake, should have done research before allowing ANYTHING Bush and friends had Okayed. When the Exxon Valdes spilled it's oil, Bush told his agent to get it cleaned up. That person told Bush that it would take 5,000 people to do that. Exxon told him "no way" and called the White House. End results, they didn't get those 5,000 and the last I heard, they still hadn't paid all the people the money they said they would. They said that Presidents come and go, but they'll still be around. Right now, the oil companies and the Koch Brothers are calling the shots. Do you actually think that Obama is the reason for the prices we're paying....come on...really? With those companies making billions of dollars on top getting millions of dollars from American tax payers, while paying no taxes why on earth should the prices be so high and getting higher? It's greed, pure and simple. They are in the catbird seat, we need their product and they are just squeezing us for every dime they can get. You have another explanation, let's hear it.
oldlady...agree, Solyndra was in motion before obozo. Of course, that was nearly 4yrs ago when solyndra may have looked viable "on paper." However, obozo's very own staff of financial analysts told him NOT TO GO AHEAD WITH it..and quote "this company will be bankrupt by September." But obozo and botox biden desperately needed a green energy photo-op and pushed it through anyway.
In addition, instead of insuring the TAX PAYER was first in line in the event of default or bankruptcy, obozo's clan made sure that the initiaal investors got ALL THEIR MONEY BACK! Conveniently, several of those investors were "bundlers" for obozo's campaign! What a stunning revelation! Obozo went on to blame china for the loss! What an absolute, lying huckster and baffoon!
What's your explanation of the actual facts or do the facts confuse you like they do most lefties who think nothing is this clown's fault?
I do believe Obama has faults. His biggest fault was trying that bipartisanship crap! I am going to fact check some of your assertions because you might have gotten them from Fox and we all know just how loosely they toss around their "facts" If you hadn't used terms like "lying huckster and baffoon, I might not have felt the need to do so, perhaps I would have taken you on your word. We "lefties" have a nasty habit of doing that...checking facts instead of just parroting unlike some who will remain nameless (Teapublicans)...sorry, couldn't just leave you guessing.
More BS from an agency that stopped being about air quality and pollution WHEN IT WAS CREATED BY A REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT (NIXON), and started being nothing but a political harrasasment organization starting with the CARTER ADMINISTRATION AND EVERY DEMOCRAT ADMINISTRATION EVER SINCE that uses it to merely get fines and harrass utility companies. I wish some of you people would read some history before you start with your methane induced opining. The EPA along with the IRS are two stellar examples of what happens when you put Democrats in charge of deparrtments that have the ability bully and rob people in order to pay for their social welfare bailout boon-doggles.
Tha EPA needs bitch slapped it was a consolidation of duplicated agencies on start up 1970 with a congressional budget of 1 trillion. After the shuffle the budget went down to 500,000. It's peak in 2010 was 10,000,000. What started as a government agency now has as much, or more power than any one of our three branchs of government. The EPA is now in a power struggle with the states, over regulation of energy production, probably with Obama's Chicago style political bribery of his appointee Lisa Jackson. If the EPA unconstitutionaly does acquire this power, the oil and gas industry will be regulated out of existance, as the coal and nuclear have been, wind generation will be attacked for killing birds, hydro for killing fish, and the world will be ruled by Arab oil cartels.
You have a very fanciful imagination especially since our nuclear facilites are outdated and in desperate need of renovation and repairs. And why is everything suddenly "constitutional or unconstitutional"? I guess you'll feel better when you start glowing in the dark. That should suit your constitutional sensibilities. The oil companies don't want anything taken away from their profits and if you think they give a flying leap that people are and will be dying from pollution, you need a wake up call. They don't give a s--- about you or me, only their bottom line. Do you think the Koch Brothers, Exxon, BP want alternative energy sources? China is investing in solar energy. They are years ahead of us. So those of you worrying about our dependence on foreign oil, get ready to depend on China for our green energy.
I have been waiting for your response..you have anything to counter the FACTS?

oldlady..don't look now but petrochina just overtook exxon as the LARGEST OIL COMPANY IN THE WORLD! And they did it in 13yrs! They'll be kicking our @$$ in oil producttion FIRST while they get there alternative energy sources going. Read how they did it with the help of the chinese govt. and taking advantage of FOREIGN INVESTMENT in oil leaseholds and production. The exact opposite our "baffoon in chief" is doing. LMAO
http://www.forbes.com/sites/afontevecchia/2012/03/29/the-end-of-exxons-rein-petrochina-now-the-biggest-oil-producer/
The loss of Exxon's place as the largest oil company in the world doesn't bother me. What will bother me is the probability that they'll want the American taxpayers to give them more of our money. Believe me, China will probably be making sure that the vast majority of that oil goes to China, not for sale on the international market. China INVESTS in its country. They don't pay the people crap, but they do invest in green energy, rapid rails...all the things needed in the FUTURE. We let big business scare us into standing still while the world passes us by. We can't invest in our future because, gasp, we don't have the money. We find the money to subsidize banks and oil companies, but we can't find the money to move America ahead, into the future.
I tend to be just about as conservative as they get, but in this case, it's so blatantly bad that the EPA should step in. I've seen the haze that covers the southwest, and it's because of those coal powered plants. When I was 16 (loonnng ago), I lived in the four corners area (NM, Colorado, AZ and Utah). It was the last place that had clear air recorded anywhere in the contiguous 48 states. By the time I was 18, the Four Corners power plant had changed that, to a prevalent, dirty haze.
Slide 6, I told you I'd check facts and get back to you. Just googled this:
Exclusive Timeline: Bush Administration Advanced Solyndra Loan Guarantee for Two Years, Media Blow the Story
By Stephen Lacey and Climate Guest Blogger on Sep 13, 2011 at 11:10 am
by Stephen Lacey and Richard Caperton
It’s often claimed that the Solyndra loan guarantee was “rushed through” by the Obama Administration for political reasons. In fact, the Solyndra loan guarantee was a multi-year process that the Bush Administration launched in 2007.
You’d never know from the media coverage that:
Because one of the Solyndra investors, Argonaut Venture Capital, is funded by George Kaiser — a man who donated money to the Obama campaign — the loan guarantee has been attacked as being political in nature. What critics don’t mention is that one of the earliest and largest investors, Madrone Capital Partners, is funded by the family that started Wal-Mart, the Waltons. The Waltons have donated millions of dollars to Republican candidates over the years.
See what I mean about "lefties" taking the time to do research?
Your post doesn't tell me what you think. As one seeking to be off the grid, Solyndra's appeal is in its engineering, which has about a 270 degree rotation, daily. I find that worth considering. I don't give a toot about the politics, other than that I think that Solyndra (which is still operating and providing positive alternatives in foreign countries) has been given an undeserved "bad rap" here in the US.
How is that working out for you?
Bassai: So far, Solyndra is 1 of 2 extant alternatives "for the nonce"; the second being Japanese solarized roofing tiles (more expensive, but more "eye appealing"). I also have to think about how to respond to local weather. I'm working on a resolution that uses photosynthesis as its base. I'm inventing it as I go, but finding others who are also of like mind, and equally "gung ho" to find an even cheaper alternative in the long run. However, when I plunk down my cash, as I will, shortly, I'll have to live with the results for the rest of my life. I'm excited by the fact that I can do it myself, using any of these options, for less than shelling out to the local utility company--and I can sell off the excess to those utilities. I live a very frugal life, without apology.
If I had the alternative of a year-round constant stream, to generate hydroelectric power, that would be preferrable, but I don't have that option.
P.S.: Phototropism is a daily constant, under which plant life operates. Solyndra took that motif, and created cylindrical photovoltaic arrays. (Just to let you know). Nature is our guru: Redux, redux, redux.
For some reason, I think things will work out fine for you. You're doing something about the problem instead of just sitting around complaining, blaming, and bitching.
LOL, way above my level. I was thinking that you were looking at more conventional solar or wind options.
1hucares
My post was in answer to Slide 6's where he talking smack about Obama's involvement in Solyndra. I am in favor of finding alternative energy sources. I believe the oil companies greatly influence our politicians keeping us from exploring other sources because their bottom line depends on our continued dependence. The more options we have, the less power they will have to squeeze us dry.
Solar has been around since the 60s, why do you think it has never caught on? It is because it is so inefficient! Are you one of those who mistakenly think that you put panels on your roof and they last forever? Light is good for solar panels while heat is very very very bad for them! It is way to expensive and doesn't work very well!
