Traci Jackson (2nd R) and others help clean up in front of a foreclosed home on May 3, 2012 in Miami, Florida. According to the Miami Workers Center, the home is owned by the Bank of America. The residents of the Liberty City neighborhood came together to clean up the abandoned property and later in the day planned on delivering the collected trash to a Bank of America branch. Trenise Bryant, a member of the Miami Workers Center who organized the event said, ''Banks maintain foreclosed properties in white neighborhoods why can't they do the same in black communities?'' ''It's bad enough these big banks put families out of their homes, now they just let the houses sit there bringing down the property value for everyone else in the neighborhood.

Reuters reported recently on bulk deals by Bank of America to sell foreclosed homes:
Private equity firms and hedge funds are eyeing the foreclosed market because the homes can be acquired at a significant discount and then rented out for steady cash flow. While the market for purchasing single-family homes remains stagnant in the wake of the financial crisis, rental properties are a hot commodity and even deemed a new asset class.
One advantage of a bulk offering by a bank is that investors are not required to hold onto the homes for an extended period of time.

Arrest for littering
Arrest them for illegal dumping it has a higher fine too.
And arrest the Corporate Pigs in the bank, for FORECLOSED BLIGHT AND UNHEALTHY CONDITIONS!
After all kiddies,it's their home now!
This is one time I fully agree with the protesters in the action they have taken! The Banks are supposed to maintain all these properties per most city ordinances. This is one way that will get some action better then sending them a bill for the cost of clean up.
bluthunder they should still bill them for the time spend doing so.
And while you're arrresting these people for littering, and the next guy for holding up a BOFA branch, give the BOFA CEOs who stole trillions more bailout money to buy that new Ferrari for their daughter.
I know a couple small cities that have clean up ordinances. They write a ticket first and if it is cleaned up in ten days by the owner, lawn mowed, etc. The city hires someone to do it and tacks that on to the fines. This is probably a good concept and when they hire people from the neighborhoods, the people get a win-win. The area gets cleaned up and they get a few extra bucks.
When cities are pro-active about things like this they can keep a neighborhood from turning into a blighted slum. It establishes some responsibility amongst the residents and ultimately improves everybody's property values. As owners of the foreclosed properties, the banks have a responsibility for upkeep. It is in their best interests to do.
And where did the trash picked up at the forceclosed home come from, it has an origin...if it was it left there by the previous owner then obviously that owner didn't care about the neighborhood (and if so the neighborhood is better off with the previous owner evicted).
It's great that these neighbors pitched in and cleaned it up, but it was the banks responsibility to do so.
Well the government is responsible too, save some garbage for them
change does require a little trash :)
first work they have done.............
Banks are letting their properties rot all over the country. Heat is turned off, pipes burst, lawns go to hell, wild-life moves in, properties get run-down real fast. Screw the banks!
At least it was bagged....
A great way to protest! The banks should be keeping properties up that they foreclose on. They are not. It was nice of all these people to "bag up the trash". It was delivered to the proper place. The banks should pay to have the trash picked up. This was an excellent protest. They didn't throw trash all over - they cleaned the banks' messes up and they just delivered it all bagged up to the rightful owners.
I agree. This was an effective demonstration.
I agree with "AllPeopleRights" comments! Thank you to the group for picking up the mess and trash and delivering them to Bank of America, you should demand the organization to pay you all for all your priceless and timeless efforts. But actually, the Bank of America has been put into shame for neglecting their new acquired properties. The news has already spread out all across the globe, it is too late for them now to correct their negligence of keeping their properties in order.
So basically, these Banks are doing everything they can to rip people out of their homes, then shove them into being rented, rather than owned. I do not get this at all. What you're basically doing is taking one steady cash flow from the owners, and sitting there hoping someone else will rent it, but no one else can because they're all on the street now, homeless.
Osama Bin Laden orchestrated the attacks of 9-11, causing the deaths of 2,000+ people. The Banks meanwhile have destroyed the economy, torn people out of their homes leaving them to the streets, and caused civil unrest by making it so no one feels safe, and breaking rules meant to protect people, including forging papers stating they tried to contact people, as well as refusing payments just so they can take said homes by force.
Now, tell me, with that in mind, which of the two is the bigger terrorist? Why is the Fed not getting in there and making arrests? Sigh.
Seriously people...BOYCOTT BANK OF AMERICA!!! Please take your business somewhere else and leave them to fester in their world of corporate greed, corporate praise, and anti-American/anti-community business practices. They should not even be allowed to have "America" in their name!!!!
...and I think the people dumping trash at BOA are AWESOME!!! After all...if BOA owns the property, then the citizens are simply transferring the trash as a favor to the owner(BOA) since I'm sure that BOA is breaking property codes by ignoring the trash at the residence!!
Communities across the nation should band together and follow the example of these citizens. Way to Go!!
MOVE YOUR MONEY out of the Big Four banks (Wells, Citicorp, B of A, JP MorganChase) and INTO a local bank or, most preferably, a credit union!! DO NOT do business with these big banks!
The banks don't want the homes they have foreclosed on. They want their MONEY!
Well that's just wrong.
then they should have been more willing to work with the homeowner.
I agree, to a certain extent. You can get so far behind on your utility bills before they shut you off, so a little leeway with a mortgage, even though you're wrecking your credit, should be expected and allowed. I've seen some pretty threatening terms in loan contracts, and they've always been straight-forward and written in very plain English. I feel pretty comfortable with a personal/auto loan, but I've never felt comfortable with a home loan. Maybe once all this discontent is over, there will be new regulations that will finally make me comfortable enough to jump into a mortgage. But I'm not holding my breath. There's nothing wrong with renting. In fact, there are unique benefits.
The Banks ALREADY got their MONEY! It is called Personal Mortgage Insurance! If you have less than 20% down payment PMI (Personal Mortgage Insurance) is required. This pays the bank in case of default! Yet, they throw the people out, keep the house and collect the insurance! How many ways do YOU think they should be paid on ONE HOUSE- which they also collect on again when anybody buys that foreclosed house! There has to be a better way! There must be another way!
Never thought of that - thanks for the info.
they
should have dumped in out in the lobbies.
Then branch staff like tellers who have nothing to do with mortgages and corporate policy would have to deal with it
true and the tellers aren't to blame, should have taken it to the president of the banks house and dumped it in his or her bed. Preferrably with them still in the bed.
Arrest them. More laws. Yes, this has helped make our society better right? Sheep.
Interesting, there seems to be this hive mind calling people "sheep" all the time anymore.
Actually, they cleaned up trash, so it did help society in one small way. On a related note, I'm sure you're out there helping society constantly, Dex.
HELL the banks foreclosed, they own everything in the house. So guess whose Garbage it is?
THE BANK'S!
Have a pleasant evening!
Geez, so predictable. The MSNBC front page had one photo and the caption "Protesters Dump Trash At Bank" I only clicked the link because I just knew this had to be Miami and bingo! The people in Miami treat the entire city like one giant garbage dump, they have no respect. They also have no personal accountability. Yes people..this is what happens when you buy things you cannot afford and don't pay your bills. The bank takes it back. Get over it, clean up your city and your filth and live within your means. It's not the bank's fault you can't balance your checkbook.
What do you mean clean up YOUR filth, that filth comes from the property the bank took back, that means it is the bank's filth.
Are the laws regarding property ownership over your head?
They actually are cleaning up their neighborhood, this was a part of what this was about, the hmes needing to be maintain as they are supposed to. Probably one of the only times I will agree with actions taken by most protesters! they did not "dump" the trash out of the bags they kept it neat, cleaned the area's of their neighborhoods, and did it in a orderly calm manner that involved no violence or harm to anyone or anything!
Dan, no laws are not above my head. But apparently many things are over yours. Have you ever been to Miami? I lived there for almost a decade and can tell you that they do not respect their city and it shows. This occurred in Liberty city. Next time you vacation down in Miami, why don't you spend some time in Liberty city and tell me its not filthy. And it's not just the impoverished areas like Liberty city either. Many middle class suburbs of Miami are ruined by the very citizens that live there.
But it IS the bank's fault for not maintaining the foreclosed properties (which they legally own) and driving down the value of other homes in the neighborhood
Brawn, How is it the bank's fault that some lazy a$$ homeowner left his trash behind? And, yes, the bank does need to maintain the property and they are now surprisingly doing a fairly good job at it. But the bank may not completely legally own this property yet to clean it up. The homeowner may have just moved out and the foreclosure process may not be complete yet. The value of the homes dropping again is not the fault of the bank. The homeowners who defaulted on their loans are the reason the for the housing market crash.
Where did the trash come from to begin with? Tires, trash etc... someone from the neighborhood was throwing it there obviously so the neighborhood should clean it. And WHY is there always a RACE issue in all the articles every single day. FYI. No they don't always care for homes in the WHITE neighborhoods. Many of the people in these hoods cut the lawns etc... instaed of letting the entire hood look trashy and it ids in their interest to keep their hood p for home values! Get over the damn Black/White thing. Tiring!
I Know that there are so many of us in this country that are so over the press and the way they seem to make nearly everything into a race issue. The question I want answered is this. Who is making these decisions, and why, what the agenda here? It does not interest me or tempt me to buy anything. What is really going on with this? Please, if anyone who is involved in the business of selling anything though the media sees this, STOP already! Enough is enough!
From the looks of the pictures that is the most work they have done for years.
You know nothing about these people other then they aren't you. And yet you feel it is OK to put them down. How big of you. Why don't you try to help someone instead of putting them down.
A little judgmental and a lot bigoted and racist are we?
"From the looks of the pictures"......do you mean that all the people working are black and brown? Or was there some other bigotry motivating your stupid comment?
I see many citizens, some of them senior citizens, one pushing the banks garbage on a walker, but they are cleaning up the mess that Bank of America left in their neighborhood. I would beleive that most of them own their homes, and take pride in their neighborhood. In these pictures I see hard working Americans polishing their dream. What do you see, yournutz?
Hey Charles Koch...is that you?
Banks do not maintain homes in any neighborhood, black or white. It has nothing to do with black or white neighborhoods........just sayin...its not about race its about ability to pay. It does not surprise me that the people in this protest feel treated this way because they are Black. Somehow its always the race card eh? I agree with the protest but not the race card ............that is boloney.
"From the looks of the pictures"......you mean that all the people working are black and brown? Or was there some other bigotry motivating your stupid comment?
People should take there stuff with them when they leave. Why should this be the banks responsibility, bad enough they cant get WHAT THEY ARE OWED! nOW THE BANKS HAVE TO CLEAN UP AFTER THESE NO BILL PAYING SLOBS!
Yes and it's sad how many of them destroy the home before they leave too. It's not uncommon for people moving out of their foreclosed homes to turn the water on and leave it or bust water pipes to flood the entire home. There are some very sick individuals out there.
Look at the pictures, they are cleaning the trahs OUTSIDE the houses that has collected on the properties! If you read that is also what they were complaining about!
Do you understand the words IN FRONT OF???
Bluthunder, They are not cleaning the house to improve their neighborhood. They are taking trash out of the home and dumping in front of some random Bank of America to PROTEST (did you read the article)? To make a statement. However, their actions are misdirected. They should take the trash to the bum who stopped making payments on his house and left his filthy trash behind forcing the bank to foreclosure and lowering the property value of all the houses around him. It is not the banks fault. The former homeowner is the one who said he would pay X amount of dollars for the next 30 years and then decides to default on a legally binding contract.
oh the poor, poor banks.
these people signed their morgages in good faith. I can't afford to own so i rent, i don't buy a house then bitch when i get thrown out for not paying the mortgage. The rest of u should move to a socialist or communist country where you belong.
Hey Dan also don't forget that these people live in these foreclosed homes for 6 months to a year or more without paying a cent to the mortgage company before they get tossed out. I've never lived anywhere for a month that I didn't pay rent or a mortgage payment. Yet these lazy bums live rent free for a year and then whine about how the big, bad bank treated them. And sometimes the banks even give them a couple thousand dollars to move out of the house. Unbelievable!
I live in a very nice neighborhood cleanhouses and properites all around this subdivision the homes are older homes but well maintained and taken care of most of the neighbors here are retired some elderly except for 2 of the homes at the enterance to my subdivision both foreclosed on one is empty has been for over a year and my God the weeds r over my head the other house the family still live in it and the weeds are over my head trash everywhere in those weeds thank goodness for the weeds on that one we have complained to guess who? Bank of America they have let the family in the one house stay there for almost 9 months scott free they do get a hand delivered letter every month like clock work but it doesn't bother them they still live there and their trash builds up and their weeds get taller and we as the neighbors have to put up with their laziness .We try to mow each of those properties on our own when we can but it is just helping Bank of America they say we will have someone there in 7 to 10 bussiness days to get it mowed and cleaned up (Hah) haven't seen them yet they take over the properties and don't take care of them wether it's mowing or wether it's putting the tenants out on the street they don't take care of them either way.
The bank should pay them for cleaning it up and the bank fined by the city and county under the ordinances most cities and counties have against eyesores.
Not to mention it looks like a growing fire hazard, is the bank going to pay for all the damage to any surrounding homes should a fire occur? Not just what happens if you can't pay your bills, if the employment is so dire...maybe some of you might never have to worry about losing everything and just taking what you can with you, so its beyond your experience. What were the mortage rates in this area?
This is probably the first time they've cleaned up the place and they do it to protest? How about just because it is the right thing to do? It looks like they could use the excersie. Don't blame it on race..cleanup your own neighbohood and me responsible for making you paments. What the bank is suppossed to let you leve there for free? Make your payments or move out. Responsible homeowners don't get foreclosure notices. Don't blame the banks. Make y ou payments and cleanup your mess losers.
Not everyone who gets foreclosed on is irresponsible. My husband died suddenly and I was left to care for 2 children by myself while working full time and finishing college. I just couldn't afford to make the mortgage payments by myself, my husband had a great job and could afford the payments easily. He had a small life insurance policy but it ran out quickly and the bank wouldn't work with me at all. I cleaned my house out before we left and I handed the keys to the bank's representative. No hate drama, I knew I couldn't make the payments so I signed the house back over to the bank, and they still trashed my credit even thought we had equity and had been paying for over 12 years. But the point of this article is that the bank is responsible for maintaining the property, as in keeping the yard from overgrowing and keeping vandals from trashing it. My old house got broken into and someone stole all the copper pipes, and ripped apart the A/C. I left the house in wonderful condition so it wasn't my fault the house needed repairs. The bank didn't even send anyone to board up the broken window against the elements so now they have damage from the rain getting inside, I cringe to think of what happened to my wonderful hardwood floors my friends and I spent days installing. The bank should have to assign someone to visit these houses and fix any outward damages and a lawn company to keep the agriculture from becoming a fire hazard and an eyesore. I think the protesters were very proactive and did a wonderful thing. And in a white neighborhood the homeowners association would have forced the bank to take care of the house, most minority neighborhoods don't have home owner's associations with lawyers to back them up. My old homeowners association finally sued my lender and after 2 years they actually won my house from the bank and now they rent it out.
And who pays to brinit up to code or liveable housing? The current owner (BoFA) or the Buyer? Doesn't Florida have laws requiring hoousing to be up to code before it can be sold?
foreclosures are sold as is no code that is why they sell for 30K - 100K below value!
Good, they spruced it up so a white person can buy it and turn a quick profit. Thanks minorities.
What a creative action! I wish I had been part of it.
Seems the city should be stepping up and putting some more pressure on the banks. The easiest way to do that is to simply get this group of local residents together with they're local rep and set up a contract with the city to do the cleaning on these properties. If the Banks are going to ignore the homes and there mess. Send in the contracted people to do the cleaning and pay them extraordinary high contracted fee's. Then the city Bills the banks to collect the cost of the contract along with everything from a processing fee to postage fee's.
The idea of ownership doesn't exist anymore.
This article is down right hillarious!
I live in south florida and can vouch that Liberty City is one of if not the WORST part of the Miami-Dade area to live in. The ENTIRE city is disgusting. Very few people take care of their homes, the streets are unkempt, and at night all kinds of crime walks the streets.
Now if only these people would put as much effort into cleaning the rest of the city, maintaining their own property, and/or snitch out all the criminals that reside in the area they wouldn't have to worry about their property being worth jack @!$%#. I mean I wish you could see this area in person, most of the homes in the area are in shambles, yet there's a very well kept or new car in the driveway. Shows where their priorities lie.
Don't misunderstand me, I'm not defending the banks, far from it, but these people need to wake up. Dumping garbage in front of a bank will NOT change their policies. You want to hurt a particular bank? STOP DOING BUSINESS WITH THEM. Nothing else you do will affect them in anyway.
The bank is absolutely blameless in this scenario.
It is the neighborhood miscreants who dumped the garbage outside of the homes who are responsible for the accumulation of trash, not the bank.
The problem stems from the lack of upbringing of the local miscreants who crapped all over their own neighborhood. But instead of neighbors directing their anger at the people who dumped their garbage where ever they choose, they attack the bank and use the bank as a scapegoat for their own shortcomings.
And then, right on cue, all the race card players chime in with their whining and yet again expose their embarassing ignorance for all to see.
I submit that the old adage "you can't fix stupid" applies in this situation. Both to the misguided people carting off their own neighborhood trash to the bank, and to the race card playing obama supporters who seek a socialist uptopia.
I will define "stupid" for you harleyguy65. Doing business with Bank of America. PERIOD. This alone is plain STUPID. B.O.A. uses alternative new methods to bleed all of its customers which include , 5 day extended holds on deposits. Fee's added to more fee's and additional fee's. I am waiting for BOA to start charging their customers entrance fee's for doing business in person.
Obama supporters verses Mitt supporters. Obama supporters are usually OUTRAGED at watching Multimillionaires paying less income taxes then their receptionists or drivers. The truth is if you expect Mitt Romney to do anything good for a average person your misguided. Mitt is already speaking about cutting the Department of Education and most social programs in America so we can balance the budget. Why isn't anyone speaking about cutting foreign aid to countries outside north america? I would like to know which foreign countries besides North Korea and Iran aren't on a US assistance plan? You cannot buy friends with money because at some point the money will run out and when that happens the so called friends will be gone as well. I learned this by second grade, why hasn't our administrators learned this?
Anyone that rides a harley is stupider than most because they need their harley to impress their friends. Using their brains will impress no one. Yes I invented a new word,"stupider" its like thickerer.BOA SUKS Harley ass gas
Almost makes you wonder how many times the same home has been forclosed.
