Syria says dozens dead in twin Damascus blasts

Smoke rising from burning cars at the scene of two bomb blasts in Al Kazaz, a residential area in Damascus, Syria, on May 10, 2012.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The images in this report were released by the state-controlled Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

Reuters reports — Two suicide car bombers killed 55 people and wounded 372 in Damascus on Thursday, state media said, in the deadliest attacks in the Syrian capital since an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began 14 months ago.

The blasts further shredded a ceasefire which was declared by international mediator Kofi Annan on April 12, but which has failed to halt bloodshed pitting Assad's security forces against peaceful demonstrators and an array of armed insurgents.

Two huge explosions in quick succession shook the Syrian capital of Damascus today. The suicide car bombs killed at least 55 people and wounded over 370. ITN's Paul Davies reports.

The U.S. Embassy in Beirut said the bombing was "reprehensible and unacceptable," but added that it would not change U.S. demands for the Syrian government to implement Annan's peace plan.

Opposition leaders said Annan's peace plan was dead, while Western powers insisted it remained the best way forward.

Annan himself condemned the "abhorrent" bombings and urged all parties to halt violence and protect civilians. "The Syrian people have already suffered too much," he said in a statement.

The twin bombings in southern part of Damascus were huge explosions- happened at the rush hour just before 8 a.m. local times. The 9-story apt.bldg suffered geavy damage (Syrians living) next to the security forces bldg. So far 40 dead and 170 injured- UN Obs.chief Mood is there to assess. Syrian National Council-Samir Nashir tells Syrian g'ment forces did it- when those injured blame Saudis. (US/Jordan/Saudi Arabia/et al have war games in Jordan right now)Horrible carnage- all the regular Syrians wanting to live a life but are subjected to the bombings-grenades-mayhem- who is speaking for them?

I have compassion for the civilians. My one thought, though, is that this regime and people have exported terror in their name. They have a violent history spanning thousands of years. If you want to take a pre-biblican society and see what it looks like in the modern era, this is it. Its not that they deserve it so much as the war they exported has come home to them.

Derek-381097 "They have a violent history spanning thousands of years". What does it means, they are violent by nature, they are used to it, it doesn't matter if they die, the West doesn't have a violent history spanning thousands of years, what do you mean?

    #1.3 - Thu May 10, 2012 10:44 AM EDT

I mean exactly what I said. You really want to compare the modern West to Syria? That would be a fantastic stretch of the imagination and is really funny.

Great job. Those sanctions and "demands" are really taking effect, just like Iran and North Korea. /sarcasm/

I wonder where the un-armed U.N. peacekeepers were at when the explosions occurred.

If you want to place blame, see who the victims are. Are they Alawite? Are they Sunni? THEN you will know the perpetrators!

We only get involved if their are US interests at stake. Thats why we are all through the "oil states" in the Middle East. Securing oil for US future needs. If we really cared about peoples lives we would have stepped in during the Rhowanda genocide. Or work side by side with the Mexican Military to wipe out the drug cartels. There are too many examples of the US getting involved in foriegn conflicts that benefit our interests only. Human life should be our #1 priority. Unfortunately we are playing "Risk" in the Middle East to maintain control of the "oil states" for our future benefit instead.

Wouldn't it be just wonderful if we could round up Putin, Junior Jong Il, Assad and the rest of the control freaks who'd rather see an entire civilization exterminated than give up a single ounce of control and pack them off to their own Isle De Control Freak? What the hell is wrong with people who would stand by and watch innocent men, women and children be blown to bits by a control freak leader?

Yes. We must get involved. This is what Americans all stand for...human rights to freedom. Any American who'd stand in ignorance of such heinous, needless bloodshed just to keep one single man in power has no conscience.

Assad is a liar and is doing what ALL power freaks do...blaming his victims. Without that military force behind him, he's cow dung. How dare one single man stand in the way of the human right to freedom?

          #2.8 - Thu May 10, 2012 8:32 AM EDT

Sorry, dissapointed, but I agree with Thomas. It's not for our govt to spend our tax money "helping" countries in which we have no national interest. You're worried about "Oh, the humanity"? Go over there yourself or spend your own money.

It may be cold, but it's the reality of the world we live in. We have neither the money nor the will to be the go-to nation for every injustice out there.

AG99....You already DO spend your tax dollars in foreign countries...to be exact? $12 billion Big Oil will use to expand their Middle eastern oil production facilities. But let's not worry about innocent people dying when the blowhards swaggering around the globe have more of our taxpayers dollars to keep their slimeball industry in place, right?

            #2.10 - Thu May 10, 2012 8:43 AM EDT

So we should spend even more money we don't have on Syria? You're right, ewent, I don't give a crap about the Syrians, especially now the rebels have descended to the typical ME strategy of bombing their own people. I don't much care for any foreign aid spending and Big Oil obviously doesn't need our taxpayer money either.

So, AG, what you're saying is if a gang of people started running through your state or town hacking and cutting down people to death with machetes and you knew that an outside entity could come in and save you and your family and tens of thousands of other people you would prefer not because they had no financial or strategic interest in it? Really? Try being on the recieving end of the hacking of a machete and I'm sure you would make an exception for your own.

I would be most proud of this country if we along with other nations would spend some money saving men women and children from getting slaughtered like animals as opposed to spending it rebuilding countries that keep trying to kill us at every turn just to have a bit more strategic placements to control oil.

Ewent & dissapointed.....The people of the regions you want to send help to do not hold the same values for life, freedom or independence as those of the west. All of these "revolutions" are simply regime change and tribal warfare. Sorry, there is no good guy and bad guy, just tribes settling scores and vying for power. The US can't fix it and should no waste our time trying. When the dust settles, they will all be back to dancing in the streets every time an American dies and burning our flag

Thomas Jefferson..How do you know what values for life these people hold? That's an obtuse statement to make when you consider that no one ever believes it's okay for a control freak to blow them apart. No one ever wants their children blown to bits because they don't value their childrens lives.

Yours is yet another amazingly keen view into how the narcisissts in this country think. Don't spend money to help others who beg for help. Just lavish those who don't need a damn dime more. Anyone who worked for those first months at Ground Zero after 9/11 would kick the asses of people with that "let them help themselves" right wing routine. Thomas Jefferson is rolling in his grave.

dissapointed, you misunderstand. Sure, I would want to be helped, as I imagine the Syrian rebels do now, but those outside powers would have no obligation to help me, especially if it's not in their national interest.

I'm looking at reality, not some idealistic world utopia. And frankly, I have zero interest in helping a country that hates us, supports terrorism against our allies, and with which we have no cultural ties.

Thomas and AG, I understand your points and I even agree with you a bit. It's hard to say what we should do every time something bad happens in the world. I sometimes feel we should just take care of home instead of medling in world affairs. Just costs us american lives and money. I just think sometimes an adult needs to step in and say enough. Shoot a gun in the air so to speak and get people to stop killing each other for a damn minute. I know it's easier said than done. It's hard to watch the bad things people do to each other. Wish it was an easy fix.

Its Russia and China standing in the way that prevents outside help from getting to these people. a bad political decision on the matter could prove disastrous.

when it comes to oil they pay .45 cents on the dollar in taxes not including the tax at the pump the government is making big bucks on big oil, while your geek companies are dodging and paying only 13% of the billions they rake in, maybe that's part of the reason they get more consideration then others its big money that runs the worlds economy would you like to try living in a world without a good economy? you may have the opportunity if things keep going the way they are. that region has always been somewhat unstable. some of you say they only want freedom well I don't know what the Muslim interpretation of the word means is that freedom to live under a council of clerics and do as you are told as opposes living under a dictator and doing as you are told etherway its not freedom, they will always have a reason to kill each other its the way its always been. as long as you have the wing nuts out there you will have factions divided and at each others throats. you better worry about what is happening at home and let them settle this. they can stop any time they want. the world is getting spookier by the day class warfare, social tension, drug wars, gang violence, illegal aliens, trade disputes, terrorist, economic failure, the list goes on and on and people still want to be politically correct, wake up to the fact that things are getting out of control. the world is a bomb and the fuse is burning. the peoples of the world are to diverse to get along, we need to focus on our own problems not Syria's. they can handle this if everyone else would just back off, that means Russia too! and when the violence stops in one area it starts up in another because the wing nuts are still spinning wildly and spewing their BS. if things keep going the way they are it won't be long and we will have enough unrest here at home that we wont have to look elsewhere for these nightmares.

Last week in an interview on NPR, one of their journalists in Syria described exactly how Assad is keeping control of the country he believes he and only he owns. She interviewed a Syrian who spoke in the native tongue and was interpreted but in the back ground you could hear Syrians begging for help from the outside world.

Syrian civilians want their freedom. Anyone who lives in 2012 wants that. Only control freak men think they can still play Ghenghis Khan and get away with that kind of despotic inhuman brutality.

It is with great displeasure that I inform you that the location of the complex city of armageddon, a fortified bluff top complex located at the ancient crossroads of three religious lands, has had it's share of wars, occupations and savage backstabbing and suicide turn-of-events. It is however with great and joyous pleasure that I tell you that these events took place well over three thousand years ago and the last was well over one thousand years ago. The so called book of revelations is not a note to future events but rather the revelations learned by past events. Indeed even the writers of the Bible included that the Book was mainly a Historical Chronicle and set of Lessons learned from the Past.

Food for thought ... if the so claimed Disciples could write a new Bible, why can't you? If they are not burning in an abyssal pit, well, why would we?

                      Lore and Wisdom.

You need salvation through Christ and it will help you see, wise still seek Him and follow. Repent for God is good and has a plan beyond this world.

Boys, settle down now, the Holy Bible teaches us: "To love thy neighbour as thy self." The problem is NOT the Bible Believers! Yes, a lot of people claim to be Christians, but they are not Christians!

To be a Christian means to be "Born Again, Washed in the Blood of Jesus Christ, to trust Christ as your Lord and Saviour." Many just claim the title! Many are not Christians as they claim to be! So "REPENT!"

The USA, NATO, Israel, and the Arab League and Turkey are sponsoring these terrorists because they want Assad's government toppled and Syria to turn into a wasteland so they can plunder it.

DJ001, how does one plunder waistland? I do not know what the rest of contries/ organizations on your list are doing, but Israel is sitting and watching. It knows perfectly well that the rebels in Syria are not likely to be very friendly towards it. Is Israel happy that Assad is weakend? Yes. Is it giving support to the rebels? He11 no!!

I know this war of the middle world has been going on quite awhile but what crusader book written by a modern symbologist gave you this piece of riddle from chapter twenty-two and was it before or after they saw a reverse angel image in the Dome of the Rock cieling only visiable by moonlight on christmas day?

The US wants the lone foreign Russian naval base in Tartus, and Israeli agents in Syria's gov't. The US is behind all of this violence. Syrian "rebels" are coming from Kosovo. Thank the USA for the thugs.

And the Libyan oil is a main supply for our "friends" in Europe. So Obama "saved" our European "friends" and "freed" (well sort of, the Muslim Brotherhood handover is hardly going to be their saving grace) the Libyan people all in one fell swoop. And took a victory lap to make sure everyone knew it.

Because NATO was invited in by the Libyan rebels and action was authorized by both the Arab League and the UN. No such authorization has been forwarded for Syria, probably because the Arabs weren't too happy with the overwhelming level of support we gave the Libyan rebels.

I'm not so sure NATO would agree to intervene this time anyway.

These bombings were cowardly acts. I must admit I am not sure of what the fighting and killing over there is all about. But I do know whatever side sets off bombs that kill women, children and innocent non-participants is the side which I will not support.

Trooper...Thank you. Your post is on the mark. The biggest problem around the globe today is that those who have enjoyed power into their old age simply cannot abide handing over the reins to younger people. We have the same attitudes in this country. Old autocrats who still think only their opinions can be the right opinions. As senior citizens, ours is merely to guide, not to dictate. Ours is to allow youthful progress that best fits the needs of a changing world our younger adults will live in long after we are gone.

No matter what else in this life we older adults do, our examples are always the most impressionable. Set the wrong one and a generation of misguided youth follows in our footsteps.

Despotic dictators who continue to believe they can hold back the world by denial of the human right to freedom prove how mentally unbalanced they really are. Stifle the human right to freedom and you cause revolt. Assad will burn in hell for his lies and murder of his own people.

You obviously do not want help for Western countries, but don't show the initiative to lift yourselves from dictators and terrorist. Bring my buddies home from this wretched corner of the world. And furthermore, stop these lunatics from coming to this country before them.

IMO it is good that this travesty is being taken to the doorsteps of Assad. The sad thing is that innocent folks are taking the hit rather then those causing the trouble. Damascus is where most of his support lies. Now, they can feel the pain of those in the other cities taking the blasts of their country's guns. Do you think all of this will bring them to the table sooner?

I am afraid the answer to your question is no. The situation in Syria has now become a zero sum game. Assad knows that the oposition will not settle for anything less that his removal from power, with out power he is almost certenly dead. Both side now have little to nothing to loose. I fear a great deal more blood will be shed before it is all over.

The answer is, remove the cradle of human life from the world and replace it with, oh dang, hmmm, inbred white people of course! Wrong channel wrong programming.

Remember these are the same people who stood in the street cheering 9/11. Now many of you want us to help.....you are the same people who cried about Bush taking out Sadaam, he killed more of his own people then Assad has.

These people need to solve their own problems, we help and then they expect us to pay for rebuilding their country.....no matter what we do America always gets blamed.

These islamic countries will hate america for ever. Their beliefs will never change and ours beliefs/society are completely different. All the liberals who are crying that we are doing nothing would be the first and worst to suffer if they lived in that area of the world, their tunes would change...been there done that.

Islamic countries are changing our society from the inside. ACT for America founder Brigitte Gabriel - Islamic infiltration into American Education. Change a country from the inside...just like Hitler

The Syrian civil war has been raging for some time now. It's being fought between the forces of the authoritarian dictatorship in power and radical Islamic terrorists that want to take over. Those Syrians who desire freedom and democracy are for the most part peaceful and being tortured, injured and killed by both sides. They have been marginalized and will be abused and oppressed no matter which thugs win the civil war. We need to stay out of the Syrian war. We are already more than $15 Trillion in debt and tied down in other wars. This is not our fight.

If the US could stand united I would support helping the people in Syria. BUT we are a short minded people and while we stand up in a rally of support in two months (or less) people will be screaming about their pocket book, their son or daughter actually got called into service (the nerve of the gov interfering in their lives) or the funding for their favorite project was cut to support the now dispicable conflict and last but not least it becomes an election finger pointing festival. We as Americans are not as strong & unified as we once were, as a whole. Yes there are bands of us who are but the vast majority think of being an American as a location not as a people of something great.
The other side of this is they have been fighting this way in the middle east since the dawn of time..... how do we change a way of life? Basically if we went in we would be just putting out fires and as soon as we leave another will flare up. Perhaps special ops would be the best way to take out these leaders but then the media would have a field day with that and all the critics would pop out of the woodwork and their would have to be a multi billion dollar investigation. It tends to leave a powerless feeling period.

Where I agree with a majority of this text, Rocks, I am pained to inform you that the American people have never been strong and unified outside of sparse allotments of time, such as when we are winning a war or pulling allies out of the muck. I still stand behind the idea of final conquest and the proper establishment of an American Empire.

It is difficult to believe there is now a peaceful component to the Syrian rebellion.Reports speak of free supply of arms and aid to the rebels from Turkey,Saudi Arabia, and other Arab League countries. And for good measure there seems to be Al Qaeda doing its own thing. All in all ,the U.S stand that this a " crackdown " of Bashar Assad on peaceful demonstrators seems to be totally outdated and even absurd.

It's to bad for the Syrians that this happens to be an election year and obama wont do nothing to anger his voter base. Should the unfortunant occure and obama wins you can bet our troops will be there without a prior congressional vote just as obama pulled with Libya. Dictators dictate they don't seek seek aproval from the peoples represenitives. Then to prehaps obama hasn't got involved becouse he looks to Assad as his mentor.
