Shell Eco-marathon pushes vehicles farther with less gas

This race has been going on since like 1939. In 1949 a studebaker got 150mpg. in 2010, team microjoule had a winning entry that got over 11,000 mpg. Why isn't this ever in the news in any big way? why has none of this technology seen the light of day? I guess we could file this in shell's "keep your enemies closer" files.
