Niagara Falls emergency officials rescue a man who plunged over the falls in an apparent suicide attempt on May 21, 2012.
Reuters reports — A man survived a 174-foot plunge over Niagara's Horseshoe Falls on Monday but sustained life-threatening injuries, Canadian police said.
The man, whose name has not been released, became only the third person known to have lived through a fall over the massive cataract without safety devices.
Canada's Niagara Parks Police said witnesses reported seeing the man climb over a retaining wall about 20 feet above the brink of the falls at mid-morning and deliberately jump into the swift waters.
He surfaced a few seconds later in the lower Niagara River Basin below, near an observation platform, police said.
He "was located by a Niagara Parks Police officer along the rocky shoreline as he collapsed in waters that were up to the subject's waist," police said in a statement. Read the full story.

In a rescue that lasted about 30 minutes, staff from several agencies extricated the man, thought to be about 40 years old.
He was flown by an air ambulance to a hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, for treatment

Good to the last drop?
More people will survive this sort of thing since the entire country is learning to live under water.
He will now go from not wanting to live, to getting rich on the talk show circuit. I will give him credit, as he will have earned whatever money he makes off of this
then he can pay back the taxpayers.
You mean the tax payers of Canada? They took him to Ontario...two words, Reading Comprehension. This goes for you too john-1377778 below!
yeah, he was in Canada! his rescue doesnt get paid by United States' taxes...i think that its cool that he survived and that he will def be going on lots of morning shows making a profit off of this suuicide attempt!!!
It's sad to me that people do dumb things and then get praised for it.
Kevin...
Nowhere did terry or john mention US taxpayers. There are other countries that tax, you know?
...a little reading comprehension, eh?
He may not be getting paid in Canada for his acts.. there is relatively new law that exists that prevents criminals from profiting from their crimes. This law was introduced to prevent Karla Homulka and other murderers from publishing tell all books about their crimes. Attempted suicide is a crime so he could be challenged and prevented from gaining financially from it.
K. Truant...
Didn't know about that law in Canada...seems reasonable to me. I think it would be a good idea for the US to adopt a similar law...
thanks for the info...
farmall48, this obviously WASN'T his last drop. Next time I guess he'll just drop dead
@cantakenomore,
That law does exist in the U.S. It's why Manson hasn't written a book.
He'd probably call it, "My Way" and make millions.
They should have had that law in Pre-WWII Germany so Hitler couldn't write "Mein Kampf."
Big Jeff...
You are correct...I did a little checking, thanks. However, it seems like there is a gray area. First one that came to mind is OJ's "If I Did It"...
I suppose this isn't a really good example since he was acquitted of the murders but found liable in civil court.
You have to be convicted of a crime for that law to take effect. That means that he would have to be prosecuted for trying to kill himself, that seems rather mean. THough I can see how they might prosecute him for endagering the rescue workers that saved him, disobeying posted signs, or something along those lines instead...
But bottom line, unless they prosecute and find him guilty he can do whatever he wants with his story. Canada, like the US, has a little thing about people being innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Terry, If you weren't so obsessed about having to pay taxes -- like you're the only one who does -- you might have noticed that this all happened in Canada and not even 1 of you're precious tax dollars is involved.
Sadly, in the US, they may SAY innocent until proven guilty, but it is
hardly that. Here most people find that you are treated as though guilty and assumed guilty until we prove otherwise. And all Americans can testify to this.
Lisa,
who's praising him?
I see you're about as compassionate as Al, and as bright.
Maybe he was a "Tea-Partier" and, given his choices this year, didn't want to live.
People like that should be charged with reckless endangerment, and be sentanced for endangering the rescuers. but those self centered morons that want to take their own life never think beyond themselves. its really a mental disorder, he should never be allowed to make a looney on this.
Fool2, if the guy lives, he will be offered to do talk/radio shows about his experience. I guess reading comprehension isn't your forte I should have said paid or rewarded for their stupid behavior.
Nice of you to show up and just dog on posters today. It's like a breath of fresh air (sarcasm in case I need to point that out to you) lol
Do you think if he is convicted of a suicide attempt, they will give him the death penalty? Or will he get "life"?
fool2...
Is the US the only country that taxes? I fail to see where terry mentioned "his" tax dollars. I agree with Lisa...you are on this vine only to b*tch, moan, and dog other posters...
Some US states have the law against attempted suicide, but I have never seen or heard of anyone being dragged into court. The laws exist to allow mandatory commitment to a psychiatric hospital until the doctors decide you are no longer a danger to yourself or others. Because of those laws, you can be transferred directly from the hospital to a psych facility, by force if necessary.
Yep Rene, I see him strapped to a bed and sedation medicine in his near future, assuming he makes it out of the hospital.
I wonder how many bones were broken on the impact. Golden Gate Bridge survivors usually have several. He's gonna be in the hospital a while.
Better than on TV. I wonder if we will ever know his reason for wanting to die.
if your going to kill yourself use a gun save the tax payers money
Just charge him for the rescue. Guns don't kill.
Or declare yourself to be an animal and have a compassionate vet put you to sleep. No muss, no fuss.
wow
I just don't think you need to make a public specticle of it. It's not hard to find a nice private place to kill yourself in.
They should take a vacation and go swimming in shark infested waters if they want to die so bad, and save their loved ones the burden of a funeral, I do respect the fact that he did not attempt to take his family with him. next time maybe he can go camping in bear country. these people don't care that someone has to clean up their mess.
The compassion in this thread is heartwarming..not.
You could go read other threads......just sayin'
Shannon - tend to agree, compassion not only here but throughout our country has all but evaporated, yet I was only half joking with the vet comment. I had the recent experience of having to euthanize a sick cat. The technique was compassionate and painless, but a human being has to resort to nasty methods like plunging into the Niagara River. Maybe that's as it should be but it sure seems inverted. That said I hope this fellow recovers and gets the help he needs.
Awesome- 174'
He should buy a lottery ticket.
Why? If he had any luck he would have used it all up.
What a RUSH
I think Niagara is a bit beyond cataract class falls/rapids.
News News News, Old News,New News. I lOVE NEWS!
have you noticed how close the boat is to the rescue.those people got bang for their buck.
Yeah, they had a great view and exciting story to tell.
It was probably the first time in the history of that boat ride that the tourists were not paying attention to the falls.
I'll bet the guy listened to Obama's mental water boarding press conference minutes before his jump.
malicious obsession; STFU
And this says just what about you? At least he's not plastic man that has nothing to say and has no idea what day it even is.
Isn't sentences like this usually followed by the sentence "Unfortunately he fell 175 feet."?
Good luck guy.
Too bad he survived
Wow, your compassion is overwhelming. I'll bet you're a Republican.
what the HE*K does Republican or Democrat have to do with any of this get a life Michael man you are totally un-educated I can tell.
why do you say" I bet your a republican" in response to the post by al? I think that was a compassionate thing to say and I was thinking the same thing... he did not want to live, he did not want to survive, his plan was to die. I'm sure he didn't expect to survive. And now that he has survived, and if he doesn't die from his life threatening injuries, he must continue on, in a life he no longer wished to live. If he lives,I hope he finds peace, I hope his life changes for the better for him, what ever compelled him to make that jump must have been beyond anyone's comprehension but his own.
Kat exactly
Michael,
Al may not be a Republican.
It could be that he's just a stupid P%$#@.
Wow, Kat. I think you may have stumbled onto a whole new approach to mental health. In fact, let's go one step further - when someone expresses a desire to commit suicide, we shouldn't bother sending the police to stop them - we should send them to shoot them instead! Instead of prescribing anti-depressants, we should be giving them cyanide pills!
why go the one step further Shannon? I was commenting on this particular case. On what I read in this particular article. I read about what had happened already and I had, what I felt, was a compassionate response to this particular man. Had they caught him before he jumped, my response would have been different. Why would you take what I said any further and then hypothetically apply it as a whole new approach to mental health? I spoke only of what I read in this case and nothing more.
@ Michael Why should anyone have compassion for a self centered, inconsiderate, cowardly, thoughtless moron that would take their own life, and bring sadness, misery and shame to their loved ones its a selfish inconsiderate act and never deserves consideration and their are no exceptions to such a deed. if a person wants to die then go hiking in bear country so I don't have to clean up after you.
you are all heartless scum. hopefully karma never brings you to the despair this man must have felt. shame on you all.
Hey lady, if you want posters to take you seriously in your posts, the name calling isn't helping your point. You sound just as bad as points of view you don't agree with. Shame on you!
LOL
hey lisa, i call it as i see it. if the shoe fits.......... i stand by my comment!
Stand by your comment on the freeway please.
nh_lady wrote about the most appropriate comment on this line so far.
I stand by nh_ladybug's comment too. There is no excuse for the comments made by the sociopaths on here.
I've been reading your comments Shannon and I think lady would refer to you as scum. You have some pretty nasty comments pointing at many posters. Hope your day gets better. Nothing a nap and maybe some meds can't help.
Sociopaths are people too
They just need treatment and compassion
Who is the psychopath the one that discourages that behavior or the one that encourages it, these people that kill themselves or try are looking for sympathy in the wrong place, its a mental disorder and it is not a solution to a problem if you want to check out find a lagoon full of sharks and save everyone the bother. let nature handle it no good will ever come of such a act as suicide, you have to tough it out no matter how hard things become life is to precious to throw away. there is always tomorrow and things can and do change. you have to survive the hard times to get to the better times. if you kill yourself you can't do that. I won't show sympathy to such a cowardly act under no circumstances never have never will.
D Buck.... if you're dead, you aren't looking for sympathy... you're DEAD. I'm pretty sure this guy thought he would die (because everyone else has with the exception of 3), and one could argue that you could potentially live after diving in shark infested waters. You could also jump off a building and potentially live. Or shoot yourself in the head and potentially live... I don't think he was looking for your sympathy. You, however, have mine.
I'll pray that he is healed. Physically and emotionally, his pain must have seemed unbearable.
Must be my karma. I missed seeing this guy go over by 24 hrs. I missed seeing the guy in 2003 go over by 30 minutes. I must be affecting the moon's gravitational pull or something.
Yeah, what a bummer it must be missing somebody nearly plunging to their deaths.
This idiot now must pay all expenses instead the taxpayer. And something more - if he wanted to commite suiside does he deserve all this?
Your compassion is overwhelming
S
been there..beautifil place...never thought about jumping though....hope he lives to say why..
To all the posters saying he has to pay the taxpayers back, get a clue.....Canada rescued him, NOT the U. S. A. You know, Canada, with the universal, socialist, everybody gets treated and cared for health care system. As another poster stated, reading comprehension is needed today.
Canadians actually pay taxes too.
Try eating in a restaurant in Canada. They tax your ass twice. As far as the health care system in Canada? It sucks. I have inlaws that live in Leamington and they can't wait to move back to the states.
And only @!$%#s would bitch about them being used to save a human life
prayers for all who suffer depression
its a tough world out there
we have to hold on to life
a natural death will come soon enough
What crap, if he wants die let him die....one less nut case in the world
I bet he bought FB at $45 a share on Friday....
I am pretty sure there is like a $3000 fine for jumping at
Niagara
Oh, really smart. SO on the rare occasions they can actually collect, they add a $3000 fine to the poor guy's miseries?
Somehow, I doubt it.
Tough fraternity initiation test.
The guy voted for Obama and didn't want to live with the mistake he made.
If that was the case, we would have 10 million less idiots that voted for the con man
OMG Kevin-363996! How about you being ignorant? haha! Really? Give yourself some learning, there are other government out there that collect taxes! I hope you know that there are other people too in the world haha! You embarassed yourself.
Having stood right next to the falls where he went in I can't imagine going out that way. A gun, yes. Jumping into the river and plunging over the falls, no. I wonder if he'll recover from his need to die. Maybe this choice will bring him out of his depression.
