Niagara Falls emergency officials rescue a man who plunged over the falls in an apparent suicide attempt on May 21, 2012.
Reuters reports — A man survived a 174-foot plunge over Niagara's Horseshoe Falls on Monday but sustained life-threatening injuries, Canadian police said.
The man, whose name has not been released, became only the third person known to have lived through a fall over the massive cataract without safety devices.
Canada's Niagara Parks Police said witnesses reported seeing the man climb over a retaining wall about 20 feet above the brink of the falls at mid-morning and deliberately jump into the swift waters.
He surfaced a few seconds later in the lower Niagara River Basin below, near an observation platform, police said.
He "was located by a Niagara Parks Police officer along the rocky shoreline as he collapsed in waters that were up to the subject's waist," police said in a statement. Read the full story.

In a rescue that lasted about 30 minutes, staff from several agencies extricated the man, thought to be about 40 years old.
He was flown by an air ambulance to a hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, for treatment

People kill people but I would be a whole lot more at ease if guns weren't added to the mix. People that say guns don't kill people are in self denial. I would rather come face to face with a man who has a rock rather than a gun. That pretty much explains it all, don't it?
I've yet to hear about someone accidentally killing themselves with a rock.
I haven't read all the comments, but the majority I read seem a little off subject. Do you really think this poor guy was thinking about the tax payers money, in any country, or do you actually think he was thinking right before he jumped to his death, " Hey, if I make it through this I can write a book and make millions!", because I'm pretty sure he thought he would die! This man was obviously sick in the head and needed help. It is really sad when the comments people think to write are so selfish and idiotic! Koodos to the ones who had similar feelings about this.

My local stations are reporting another jumper today. This one did not survive. Yesterdays was a suicide attempt...

I can assure you madam that God had no part in this what so ever and to claim otherwise is to turn God into some kind of imaginary all powerful being that let's evil men prosper and children be raped by men of God.
I have a question, who says he was trying to commit suicide? Maybe he was one of those thrill seekers who try and to out run an avalanche. Or go surfing during a hurricane. I guess everyone is assuming he was trying to commit suicide because who in their right mind would jump? How many attempt to ride a wave in a category three storm? I hope he survives just so we can ask," What the hell were you thinking?".
If he was a thrill seeker, I would think he would want all his buddies around to cheer him on and see him accomplish this, maybe even film this event. I don't think that was the case. I could be wrong. Time will tell.

Publicity stunt. He just wants to be able to say "I survived!" if he REALLY wanted to kill himself there are more proven effective and private ways of doing so
I really think it is sad that so many people are making jokes and taking it lightly what he did! This man was hurting so bad he wanted to take his own life......I am sure at the time he did this, he wasn't thinking about the profit he might make if he lived. He wasn't even thinking about the family he was leaving behind and how hurt they would be. I just hope when you make your coments you would think about who might be reading this....his family and friends are probably just devastated!
Poor guy, I'll say a prayer for him and hope he can overcome his desire to die. Obviously it wasn't his time to go. I hope he finds the help he needs to help him get through his depression regardless of whether or not he's a democrat or republican, American or Canadian, fined money or not, or if our tax payers money is used.

Obviously this man had issues in his life that he felt he needed a permanent solution to a temporary problem. We sure don't know why he felt suicide was his only option. I do hope and pray that if he survives his injuries he realizes that he was spared death for a reason and he recognizes the value and beauty of life. I also hope that if he lives he turns his life now that he's been given the gift of a second chance. May God be with him and his family.
