From NBC: Naval vessels ranging from a U.S. amphibious assault ship to a Finnish minelayer are participating in Fleet Week. The organization Operation Sail says 17 tall ships from around the world also will be in the city. I was on a sailboat in NY harbor for the bicentennial in 1976, and for Operation Sail in 1986 celebrating the Statue of Liberty's 100th birthday. Seeing all of the tall ships in the harbor for those events was amazing. It is a shame that many of those ships are no longer around for others to see, they were absolutely magnificent. The number of these old tall ships in the world has been dwindling rapidly, largely due to the expense of keeping up the ships. It is a shame to see them fade away as there are very few things more majestic than seeing one of these ships under full sail.

At age 86, I have seen the fleet of tall ships only one time in my life, and the sight was awesome. They are so beautiful.

Where is the Constitution? Boston is pretty close to NY.

        The Constitution doesn't sail often!

I remember the tall ships coming to Boston for our bicentennial in1976.

Way cool to be a part of that event.

Pardon my ignorance but I have no clue what type of ships these are besides "tall ships". They look really cool though. I love old ships with sails. I would love to see some of the old sloops, barques and galleons from the 16 and 1700s.

The sailors must be rather brave. I don't think I could go up like that without a panic attack. A fear of heights stinks.

I was in a crows nest once on our tall ship the "Half Moon", when the crew decided to sully the ship as a joke.

Rocking it from side to side. About a 40 foot swing. As the chief engineer and usually below decks, it was quite the ride!

Amazing, thrilling, and terrifying at the same time. I bet you had a cigarette after that - or scotch straight up.
