German army soldiers serving in the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo guard a bridge near the town of Zvecan, Kosovo, on June 1, 2012. NATO-led peacekeepers have confronted stone-throwing Serbs seeking to prevent the international troops from removing their roadblocks in the tense north of Kosovo.
Reuters reports — At least three Kosovo Serbs and a NATO soldier were wounded in a gunfight on Friday as peacekeepers tried to dismantle Serb roadblocks blocking traffic, a Reuters witness said. NATO troops fired tear gas and small arms and some protesters fired back with handguns.

The troops, in armored personnel carriers, were confronted by hundreds of Serbs who pelted them with stones near barricades in the villages of Rudare and Dudin Krs outside the town of Zvecan in a Serb-dominated northern area of Kosovo. Read the full story.

Pull NATO and let them duke it out... NATO has been there way to long.
Okay....so....fundamental misunderstanding of why NATO bothered to fight a war in Serbia.
Got it.
You should go read about it.
Hey Obama:
Non - Muslims are being prosecuted all over the world which in this instance now its the Serbs. What are you going to do about it? Will you go "on tour" again promoting in this case an Serbian Spring? Oh that's right I remember what and where your allegiance is - a skyline of minarets around the globe....
The Serbs are nothing but trouble makers and should be sanctioned for the genocide the committed in the 90's. NATO should open fire on any of them that try to block access to roads anywhere in Bosnia. These people committed massive numbers of rapes during the war of genocide and they should be locked up.
Shoot back, okay, but don't lock them up. Serbs did not invent themselves. You could have been born one. There is no drive-up window in the sky where you ordered your parents or the country you desired. When your parents were having unprotected sex and you were conceived, you had nothing to do with it. Whether both of them enjoyed it is another question, but you have enough to think about right now.
Seriously Vegains? Do you also agree with that "pastor" that wants to put gays and lesbians in electrified pens?
I suppose living in the cushy US of A doesn't give you a finer appreciation of just how sh.tty people can be in extreme circumstances. No it isn't pretty, only the people who committed the crimes should be locked away, not an entire people.
Your sentiments sounds awfully familiar to Hitler and Stalin.
The Pastor that said those things has the right to say whatever he wants in this country. Does it make it right? No, but let Vegains state his opinion without your scathing critique of his freedoms.
The Serbian people are awesome. That war was years ago, and these days, the Serbs in Kosovo just don't want to give their old land away because more powerful governors decree they should, for their own benefits.
If you need to condemn an entire people for atrocious crimes committed during war, well, we Americans should be condemned. How about our murderous tendencies, our manipulations of entire CIVILIZATIONS to get what we need. The winners of the wars are never the criminals, only the losers.
Serbs shot and killed hundreds of thousands of women, children, and men, one by one, and you call that awesome? These murders were direct orders from the President.
Then you say "WE" Americans should be condemned? You are not American. You are a Serb. Keep being "awesome" with your 1700's mentality.
Serbs can be at least understood. I would also grab a gun if some foreign power overnight made me minority living in a foreign country, even though I stayed on the land where generations of my forefathers lived.
The Serbs created a racist state in Kosovo, where the native population had their land stolen, their homes torched, and were not even allowed to use their language is schools. The Kosovars were treated with disdain by the cops and system, and often unfairly prosecuted and killed. All the while the Serbs framed this in nationalist/fascist platitudes of Christianity versus Islam, and ancient archaeological claims.
In this instance NATO is providing a necessary buffer between an angry, bitter, and violent people, the Serbs, and the indigenous population, the Kosovars.
They are not the "indigenous" people in Kosovo. A lot of them are Albanians who've settled there in relatively recent times.
Serbs were always the minority in Kosovo. This didn't happen overnight. It's been that way for centuries.
Anonymous, we in the New World are unaccustomed to such abrupt changes in sovereignty but in border regions of Europe "Under New Management" is a routine occurrance. Unfortunately it often is a source of instability and war.
Every new state of East Europe created by Treaties of Versailles, Trianon and Saint-Germain had either a deep grievance or intractable internal problem. The Sudeten Germans wanted out of Czechoslovakia. In the end they were pitched out with only the clothes on their backs. Hungary thought all of Transylvania should belong to it. At least the uprising against the Ceausescus of Rumania began there.
These "ethnic minority" questions mostly have been resolved except in the former Yugoslavia where it's still 1918. Or 1618.
Actually riley, I think my scathing comments are quite justified. Suggesting to wipe out an entire people just because of something they've done in the past is no better than railing against them in the first place.
Genocide for genocide doesn't work. Just look around you.
If or when the global economy totally crashes, and no one can afford to police the world as we do now, we will see more and more regional outbursts. People basically don't like each other and resort to violence to settle their differences. We are likely to see the same in the US some day.
alsophia theophilos---the more i know of people the more i love my dog. it amazes me that billions are spent building super colliders to research nutrinos and particle matter while no serious investment is made to improve human behavior. research needs to be done on social problems that lead to violence in particular wars. without a correction in our ability to accept our differences and work to educate 3rd world countries our end (the human race) is in sight. we are destroying our environment and our fellow creatures at an astounding rate . let's study why man loves war. the super colliders may produce fascinating science but do nothing to improve life on earth.
Who cares about Bosnia ? We do ! Not because we have some great emotional commitment, but because we had to intervene once before and if those crazies get out of control we'll be dragged back into it again. We can stay out of anywhere we haven't been before, you know like Rwanda, but once we've been somewhere we have an uncontrollable urge to go back. Personally, I don't care what happens there, but Europeans pretend to care. If Bosnia flares but again, the Europeans will do what they always do...nothing, then squabble over doing nothing. Some American news/photog will shoot "the picture", you know...the one that gets splashed across the front page of the New York Times of some mangled little kid that ramps up US public opinion and Voila we're back in Bosnia! Tell me I'm wrong.
Well, technically the article is about Kosovo, not Bosnia. Many of the same issues and tensions, yes.
I don't see why norhtern Kosovo shouldn't be allowed to re-join Serbia if that's what they want. Right to self-determination.
If this area is dominated by the serbs, why not just let them join serbia? I thought Kosovo was made so that the Albanian backed minority would be protected, no reason to keep an area that is dominated by hostile serbs...
Granted I'm no expert on the situation, but it just seems to make sense
Re-join Serbia, yes, why not? Forcing people to live together didn't work in Tito's Yugoslavia and it doesn't work today. The ethnic and religious tensions just festered under the surface and then flared up again once that artificial union was dissolved.
Hi. Kosovo is actually the Serbian Holy Land, if you will, and has been the cultural heart of Serbia for many centuries. Because of politics and money, etc., the greater global western government decreed that the Muslim Albanian settlers could have Kosovo for themselves, and declare themselves independent of Serbia.
Many Serbians don't honor the gifting of their Holy Land to settlers, and are trying to hold onto it.
Rejoin indeed, I should of clarified that for any who didn't realize how Kosovo became a nation. You bring up a good point about Tito, like many dictators he was able to keep all the repressed ethnic tensions focused on himself, as soon as he was gone Yugoslavia was thrown into turmoil.
As I said I am no expert on the Balkans history, but I do not understand why you would break off a piece of a country to keep a minority group safe, and at the same time incorporate areas that are dominated by the previous majority, especially if they are right on the border, doesn't make sense.
What?? You mean people would rather hate each other than all sit down together, share their food and sing "Kumbaya"? How strange! Surely with all the babbling from politically correct leaders and visionaries, we should be above such things as remembering injustices and injuries. Or - could it just possibly be that multiculturalism just doesn't work, and that the old rules of separation and "birds of a feather" really had some basis in fact?
A flock of all black chicks will attack a white one put with them, driving it off or killing it. Japanese Snow Monkeys have hereditary status, allowing or excluding them from staying warm in thermal springs. Are humans just animals? Or can we learn to be better?
The United States Civil War would seem to make its citizens hypocrites if supporting the dissolution of a nation. Of course the hypocrisy was already there at the time as part of a state was allowed to secede. (West Virginia).
In before Madeleine Half-Bright shows up all hot and bothered and advocating killing more Serbs. Am I too later or maybe she is just sleeping in?
When the Muslims in Kosovo gain total power and become the military, the Serbs will be exterminated and nobody will even think about stepping in to stop them. The only reason NATO is there now is to keep the Serbs from running the Muslims out -- again.
It's about time the Serbs fought back against NATO and the UN as they got a raw deal during that strife in the Balkans. Canadian General McKenzie, who had a lot of experience there, said that there were "no good guys and no bad guys" as the West had pictured. The Serbs, Croats, and Muslims all had blood on their hands. If the other factions had possessed the large weapons that the Serbs possessed, there would have been larger numbers of Serbs massacred as they all hated one another. However, the Europeans and Americans have to paint someone as being evil so why not pick on the Eastern Orthodox Serbs as opposed to the Catholic Croats (also ex-NAZI allies of WWII) and the so-called oppressed Muslims who gleefully kill Christians and other minorities whenever they're in the majority.
There's a lot of truth to what shark has written.
Well tell Shark to read this then shut "the you know what up"!!!!!!!!
In the cross-examination of forensic anthropologist William Haglund, Karadzic tried to prove that most of the victims from the Srebrenica mass graves had died in combat. ‘People do not fight blindfolded’, responded the witness. Haglund dismissed Karadzic’s suggestion that the blindfolds were ribbons that warriors wore around their heads that ‘accidentally slipped over the victims’ eyes’ as the bodies decomposed
In the cross-examination of forensic anthropologist William Haglund, the accused Radovan Karadzic presented his version of the events in Srebrenica. Referring to the evidence of Dutch colonel Franken, Karadzic said that the column of 13,000 to 15,000 men – a third of whom were armed – ‘fought on as they tried to break through’ towards Tuzla. According to the BH Army data, ’10,000 fighters’ arrived there while about 3,000 men had been ‘lost in the woods’: they were killed fighting the Serb forces.
To complete this picture, Karadzic trotted out another well-known argument: the war in BH went on for 44 months and there was heavy fighting in the Podrinje area, with a lot of casualties. Karadzic also said that warring factions handed the bodies of their soldiers killed in action to the soldiers’ families, and buried the dead enemy soldiers in mass graves ‘in line with the law on the hygiene and sanitation measures’. Karadzic put it to the witness that 85 % of BH Army soldiers didn’t wear military uniforms.
The American anthropologist noted that the victims buried in the mass graves at the Branjevo farm and near Orahovac, where he was involved in the exhumations, were blindfolded, often with their hands tied behind their backs. ‘People don’t fight with blindfolds on’, Dr Haglund remarked. Karadzic then put it to the witness that these were in fact ‘warriors’ ribbons’ worn around the heads that had slipped down as the bodies decomposed. The witness replied that it was ‘hard to imagine that all the warriors’ ribbons had slipped from the foreheads to the eyes and remained there, tightly bound’.
Did shark write anything about Srebrenica? No. He simply said that, given half a chance, the Bosnian Muslims would've done the same things on the same scale. In fact they (Bosnian Muslims) did perpetrate many atrocities, though on a smaller scale, there were just less organized and without the means that the Serbs had.
Were you there serpcom? Probably not. I'll trust General McKenzie's assessment which also happens to fit the overall picture as human nature and history inform us about that region.
Hmmmm.... Let's go throw rocks and shoot at Soldiers! Hey, why are they shooting back?
Freakin idiots deserve what they get.
If our country were occupied by a foreign power the response would not be pacifist. Say the UN decided to give Georgia back to the Cherokees, New Mexico to the Pueblo, Florida to the Seminole and South Dakota to the Sioux. How would the current landowners react? There are parallels here.
I have two fould words for any complaing Serb.
Radovan Karadžić!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I live in a southwest Fl community with a heathy population of Serbs.
Many still consider this evil bastard a patriot and a saint.
What stupid people, you see there was this guy named Tito and he was a dictator and as long as he was there the serbs, moslems and croats lived peaceful or he would kill them. End of the cold war, end of the dictatorship and they went back to killing each other. Serbs 20 years ago did horrible things as did croats and some moslems. The Europeans didn't have the balls to do anything, as well as the UN so the US stepped in and finally stopped it. Been there long enough, a lifetime occuppation is stupid and unaffordable. Nation building in the USA and only here. I have known good serbs, good croats and good moslems and they are going to have to deal with it themselves. We are not the worlds policemen. All troops home now!!!!
Yes but Tito didn't solve anything, he just kept a lid on it. So once Yugoslavia dissolved, the Croats, Serbs, and Muslims resumed killing each other as they have since the Ottoman Muslims invaded hundreds of years ago and brutally suppressed the native populations there. The Ottoman invasion was obviously the start of Muslim involvement in the Balkans, and the brutality of that long occupation explains a lot of the Serbian historical memory and bitterness.
Now that America has handed over Kosovo to illegal aliens from Albania will we soon part with New Mexico,Arizona,Texas and California which are NOW majority Hispanic states...since 9-11 we have opened our doors to over a million new Muslims..and now live in a police state where people are questioned and harassed when they fly...just so Obama and the Dems can have their "multi-cultural" paradise!!! We are so busy creating NEW Muslim states in Bosnia,Kosovo,North Sudan and soon Macedonia...that even the U.S. will run out of territories to hand over!!! God Bless the Serbs and Israelis...at least their NOT NATO stooges!!! Why doesn't NATO help Greece recover Ionia and N.Cyprus from Turkey or return "Moldavia" to Romania..or that's right those are Christian states and not on Obama's radar!!!
