USGA Executive Director Mike Davis, center, grabs a man who interrupted the trophy ceremony after Webb Simpson, right, of the U.S. won the 2012 U.S. Open golf tournament on the Lake Course at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., June 17.

Jay Coffin of the Golf Channel reports — As NBC’s Bob Costas was interviewing newly crowned champion Webb Simpson a mysterious man, wearing a Union Jack hat, started crowing like a bird. Costas and Simpson were looking mysteriously at the man when U.S. Golf Association chief Mike Davis jumped into the picture and forcefully pulled the man out of the way.

Watch video of the incident below:

A raucous fan, wearing a wacky Union Jack cap, disrupted Webb Simpson's trophy ceremony at the US Open with squawking bird calls. Msnbc's Willie Geist reports.

Simpson saved par on the hilly 18th hole with a chip from the rough to about 4 feet, closing with a 2-under 68 to hold off Graeme McDowell and Michael Thompson in a foggy final round at The Olympic Club on Sunday. Simpson finished at 1-over 281.

Michael Thompson and Graeme McDowell were a shot back.

Simpson should have hit one more birdie - a good whack with a 9 iron should have done it.

I think that's that crazy guy who is on Jimmy Kimmel all the time, shows up at all the trials in LA and talks during interviews in the background.. Like the Michael Jackson trial and many others. Actually he's not all there, which is kinda obvious.

Giving him more press time is what he wants, if that is him. He'll be on Jimmy Kimmel tonight.

Probably a good reason to keep the beer cart away from the golf course for awhile.....lol.

Why would they arrest him for interrupting a ceremony?

Is that illegal? Or is the birdman an Ill eagle? Major questions here.

He must have been suffering from a letdown after the Queen's Jubilee and was all disoriented and stuff. In the UK, he'd no doubt get a slap on the wrist and a cup of tea; here, he gets a night with Big Bubba in the lockup.

Sometimes, when people are narcissistic losers, controlling their liquor is out of the question. I'm sure this idiot will be banned from every golf event from Opens down to Pitch & Putt courses.

Okay, so I by no means condone this type of behavior, but is this really an arrestable offense? He simply interrupted a trophy ceremony and made an ass of himself on worldwide television. I mean presumably he was a paying customer to the club/tournament, so he wasn't trespassing. He did not assault anyone (although you could argue it was an assault on humanity!) or steal property. I'm just not getting it.

Simply remove him from the grounds and ban him from the club if you wish, but to send him to jail....not so sure about that one?

(all that being said, my juvenile side found it rather funny...certainly not a ceremony easily forgotten!)

There is really no evidence that he was arrested, is there? He was cuffed, and sure, they say he was arrested, but that doesn't mean there are any charges against him. They could have just cuffed him to take him out of the area. Maybe they took him to the police station, but we don't know that the pressed charges.

The guy is an idiot. Of course, every day I find more and more idiots; unfortunately, being an idiot isn't a crime. :/

Being a paying attendee/ticket holder does not permit access to the entirety of the facility. Attendees are required to remain within particular designated areas and boundaries. Crossing these boundaries is indeed trespassing. The end result will probably be a fine, but the arrest was justified.

Excellent job Bird man! Made the trophy ceremony much more enjoyable versus listening to that ever boring Bob Costas. I applaud this behavior and hope to see more of it at other events.
