AP reports: Twenty firefighters from Garden Grove and Anaheim put out a house fire in Garden Grove, California on Thursday. According to Garden Grove Battalion Chief Chuck Green, the firefighters arrived to heavy smoke coming from a back bedroom. Two occupants of the home got out on their own but firefighters rescued two dogs and two cats inside the home.

Three cheers for the firefighters and the pitty.
Thank you firemen for rescuing those precious pets!
great to read about compassionate human beings!
I think it was about 2 years ago I remember reading about the firefighters acquiring oxygen equipment that would work with animals. I'm glad to see them putting it to use.
Yeah you gotta love California.
Good to read a heartwarming news story! Thanks firemen!
No comments from the people who are irate over the park ranger losing his life while on a rescue calling the climbers "stupid, Ignorant etc.."?
I mean, "these" stupid people ran out of their house and the firefighters "risked" there lives saving their pets. I mean good job and all but, nobody got hurt.
NOW, if a firefighter died during the rescue (of pets), I guess then I'd see those kind of posts.
Glad nobody was hurt and the pets are OK. Great job firemen.
VEry nice to see everyone made it out. If they only needed a little oxygen, that is also great news. Thanks to the firfighters, they have a tough task to face day in and day out.
Three cheers for EVERYONE involved, even the ticked off Ms. Kitty up there!
I volunteer at an inner-city animal shelter that's about 75% pit bulls and I have never been bitten by one. Cocker Spaniels and poodles are the absolute worst.
Amanda, I have a rescue pit, that was dumped. By the time she adopted us, she was a bag of very sick bones. Maggie is now a perfect dog, except for the fact my older mixed breed refuses to get along with her. We are a house divided, a happy house, with the cats loving both sides.
Thank you for your work at the shelter.
Amanda-I worked as a veterinary assistant during college(back in the late '80's) and I'd say the exact same thing. Granted, if a pit were to bite you you'd loose some flesh but I was never threatened by a pit, those little f*ckers, chow chows, and cockers were the ones you really had to watch out for. 25 years later it sounds like not much has changed regarding some breeds.
These wonderful photos were by Bruce Chamber of The Orange County Register. Great job to him, amazing job to the firefighters who made sure to value every life at the scene of that fire.
Couldn't agree more! Great job firefighters and great for all the pets and humans involved. Love it.
Mark are you a complete jackass or what? Who are you to assume that we don't pay our share of taxes - and really, what does that have to do with this article? It's about our firefighting heros being compassionate and SHOULD BE a heartwarming story. But once again, trolls like yourself have to come here, go off topic and cry about their personal agenda. Don't want to pay taxes? Great. Go live elsewhere, we won't miss you.
Putting their lives on the line on a daily basis. I raise a beer to the firefighters, employees of the year award!
Typical, the dog is taking in the oxygen and looking as though he wants to say "thanks man". The cat however, likely scratched the fireman's face clean off and hissed at the oxygen.
I love dogs.
The cats appreciate it just as much as the dogs do. Of course, the dog is a pitbull, so as soon as people realize that, all the anti-pitbull crowd will be making their usual ignorant remarks, just like the cat haters.
Cats make wonderful pets. They are very clean, very playful, very loving, very gentle, and very loyal. Mine has been my best buddy for many years!
I love my little fur guy dearly. He is playful, loving to the extrene and loyal but clean, not so much. He's a little slob. Gotta love the firemen that would go into a burning house to rescue them.
I think the kitty just doesn't like cameras, as she has no problem with the firefighter carrying her to safety in the photo before her hissing photo. I am not a big cat fan either, for one I 'm allergic to them, but give him/her a break, she just went through a very traumatic experience, still scared and then this black thing is in her face that she doesn't recognize, poor thing. She is still a precious little animal and although some cats can be unpredictable and temper-mental, there are many that are sweet and loving. So glad to hear everyone is safe! Hooray to the awesome firefighters for saving the day!
Should we really be rescuing pit bulls? Is this a good use of taxpayer dollars?
Mark Taft, you are the most narrow-minded, ignorant, heartless clown i've ever read a comment from. I never leave comments but i sincerely hope that one day you are trapped in a burning room and no one comes to your attention.
Mark - It never fails that a negative person will try to find something negative in...almost anything! Every creature lives, they don't run on batteries, and they deserve and value their lives as well as we human beings do. Respect all creatures, especially dogs and cats. They give us so much, their lifespans are so short, yet they ask for so little.
Also, if you've never had a pitbull/mix, you will never understand why so many people defend them.
Look folks, I'm the one who pays most of the taxes. It's nothing to you since you probably pay no income taxes at all.
I would venture to say that almost everyone on this board pays taxes. If you or your family were in a house fire and firefighters came to your rescue, would you be grateful? Do you think firefighters check your tax records before they decide to come and rescue you?
Don't worry so much about taxes. Death and taxes are unavoidable. Believe me, if there was a way I could avoid paying taxes, I would. I'm not lucky enough to be one of the 1%, either!
Troll alert!
Nothing to see here folks, move along...
F--k you Mark, you ignorant PR--k!!!!!!!!!!!!! And i pay plenty of taxes. Put your f-ing helmet on and go back to your mommy's million dollar basement.
Don't feed the troll (Mark Taft) & it will go away! THANK YOU FIRE DEPT. for a job well done! Thankful all got out unharmed.
Mark,
So you are assuming you make more money than anyone else here on this post. Well for us here it is the second comment you've made that shows your ignorance. So sad for you. Oh and btw, I'd rather be in a room with a hundred pitbulls than with you. Every pitbull was born an innocent puppy and if they are mean it is because of what humans like you ( ignorant, stupid and uneducated) did to them to make them mean.
Always the ignorant ones who jump to conclusions.
simply, you are so correct. The ignorant ones are out in force today.
@ Mark Taft - well done, you win the ignorant jack-ass award of the day, per your comment regarding how the rest of us do not pay taxes and you somehow are covering our responsibilities. Since you operate under assumptions why don't you man up and lets us know exactly how much $$ you make and how much you pay in taxes?? Something tells me I'm not going to be very impressed....you're on a website with a lot of highly educated and well paid individuals (me included).
Oh, look! Another internet "rich guy" who is desperate for attention. lmao...
It was probably the pitbull that started the fire while making meth...
Marky Mark and the trolling bunch - good try Sir.....
Just quit replying to people like Mark and others like him, and he'll go away.
akua007, My income isn't all that high these days. Just my net worth. Get my drift?
And yes, I am getting tired of paying all the bills.
You're welcome to leave, Mark. Don't let the door bang you on your entitled old butt, okay?
Says the ignoramus who posted, to another article, this absolutely choice comment:
Pot calling kettle black!!!!
He's a cat and they took his picture without his permission. No wonder he's pissed off...............
Great job by the firefighters there. Glad the pets are okay, even if the cat doesn't appreciate it.
she's aiming that hiss at the photographer not the firefighter
just hates having her photo taken when she's not at her best !
and these are the public sector workers the "Repugnantcans" are gunning for...
Don't ruin a good story with your crap, please.
Damp, you're all wet.
Get it? All wet. LOL
Why do you haters always have to jump in with your stupid political hate comments on stories that have nothing to do with politics? Are you so brainwashed to actually believe republicans are trying to get rid of fireman? lol that hate and ignorance some people have is amazing.
Forgot teachers and policemen. Who do you think loses their jobs when taxes get cut? CEOs?
We have way too many teachers and police. We could get by with half as many and never notice the difference. Government jobs are just another form of welfare.
Kai: Is it not true that we hear a constant refrain from Rethuglicans (enabled of course by the other half of the DemoThug party) that public workers (indeed, government workers everywhere - except the Pentagon, of course!) are lazy, overpaid, and need to have their pay/benefits cut?
Is the above not true?
Mark's contribution to this discussion should be ignored. Really folks, when you pass the town idiot in the street do you stop to engage in intelligent discourse or do you smile, say hi and walk briskly by? Mark is the town idiot.
No Republicans are not trying to get rid of firemen (and teachers and union jobs) but are working feverishly to lower their pay, benefits and ability to negotiate.
Quit replying to Mark please.
UGH! what republicans would like to do is make sure that the teachers are teaching the students, if they are not then get rid of the ones that aren't. There are many teachers (not all so don't get confused) that are not doing their jobs. They are able to hide under the teachers union to keep their jobs. Personally I see nothing wrong with this. We should all be accountable to do the job we are hired to do, especially teachers whom are in charge of the education of our children. And no they are not working feverishly to lower pay, benefits, and ability to nagotiate. I work for a company that has a union and surprisingly 99% of the employees want out of the union but because of the laws is difficult to do and costs money. So no unions are not always good. From what I've noticed in working under this union is they are there to protect the lazy
Fritter-and-wait,
That's because you don't understand cats...
i understand they are vindictive and not always gentle. i have been around other people's cats and that was enough. they bit, clawed and were just generally not nice. may have been those particular cats only but it was enough.
hatr - You are so wrong. Maybe your friends' cats know you're a "hater". They can sense that you know.
Logically, if all cats are vindictive and not gentle, no one would have one. There are a lot of sweet ones around. Maybe you give off bad vibes since you expect them to behave badly and have been scratched before.
Kris...cats are very aware & for sure they would pick up bad vibes & hatred...the Egyptians revered them for good reason I say
I am allergic & cannot have a cat around me but I delight in my friend's cat's antics...
even if it must be from across the room... sniff sniff
Hip Hip HOOORRAAAYY!
Hip Hip HOOORRAYYY!!!
What a great story to start the day off with, thanks to all the firefighters out there.
Whenever I see men being kind to animals, it makes my heart feel so good. Because my father used to abuse them. It actually soothes me heart when I see a man being kind to animals or children. Takes my senses to a different level - away from abuse.
Claire Simard...
so sorry your dad was such an insensitive jerk...
may you meet kind men and women everywhere you go !
Sorry to hear that your dad was abusive towards the defenseless. It is very difficult to understand how people can consciously be cruel to animals, just like it is difficult to understand how people can be cruel to children. They are so precious and innocent, they should be receiving only love. It seems to me that you are changing the cycle of violence by not being abusive yourself or staying away from abusive situations. I too hope you meet more kind men and women along your journey through life.
Thank Heaven the humans and the four-legged furries got out okay! Thank you to the fire fighters (everywhere) who risk their lives!!!
Great story - nice way to start off the morning while drinking my first cup of coffee!
Great job. They just don't get cats out of tree's. Pets r like our childern.
Getting cats out of trees is a waste of firefighter resources. How many cat skeletons have you seen in trees?
Exactly denver. The bill to rescue these pets was probably over $100,000.
We need to cut police and firemen by 50%.
Denver Bill 2: You shouldn't bother to comment if you can't say something nice. Give everybody a break: "Waste of firefighter resources"? Who do you think pays for their resources? There are plenty of other areas where there is plenty more waste. Anyway, this isn't an article about getting cats out of trees.
@Mark, Oh, how shall I count the ways?
1. S&L scandal.
2. Insider trading scandal.
3. Michael Milken
4. Dot Con "Boom" and "Bust".
5. Enron.
6. Countrywide.
Yeah, we need to make cuts allright.
Dangit, where'd I put my can of Troll-B-Gone?
No fun in that, deery.
"If you haven't got anything nice to say about anybody, come sit next to me." ---Alice Roosevelt Longworth
Actually, Denver Bill, to my knowledge- most fire depts won't do the "cat in the tree" rescue any longer. There are services for that and they will refer you to them. Get back under your bridge troll.............
Well Deery, to effectively use firefighting resources and help with training, the next cat gets blown out of the tree with a hose. Nice kitty.
And I thought pit bulls did better with pure nitrogen.
The cat was just mad that they took it's picture when it wasn't properly groomed.
Which is more proof that women evolved from cats....
LOL I am a woman and think that is funny.
Lol, me too, and proud to say it's true! Hats off to my hissing sister!
I say God bless all firemen, police, EMT amd all other rescue pesonel that will risk their lives to save a life no matter they race, species or political affiliation
Dampship I'm sorry no one pays attention to you in the real world but take your negative outlook and stow it - the rest of could use a feel good story without the polical BS
Nice to see !!
I think the kitty was gasping for air. Either way, kudos to the firefighters for their compassion toward the animals and their willingness to enter a burning building to rescue them.
No, that's one mightily cheesed off kitty. Look at her eyes. She'd like to rip the photog a new one for taking her photo with muddy paws. She's not fighting, though, which sort of surprises me. I wouldn't want to put an oxygen canula on my cat!
Oh, I agree! One time our cat got caught with a plastic bag around his neck - I had just taken groceries out - and started running around the house with the bag flapping. I tried to catch him to take the bag off, my son and his friend were laughing uncontrollably, when the cat finally jumped on our dresser and got the bag off himself. You could not get near him for two days, he was that pissed and scared. Our dog came up to him like, "Whatsa matter kitty", all concerned, and I thought he would take her face off (I think he thought she was in on it!) He meowed as if he were from another planet, making sounds I never heard him make before. I grabbed a towel and put him alone in a spare bedroom with food and water for 2 days, talking calmly and sweetly to him, until he finally calmed down.
They say that "hell hath no fury like a scorned woman", but in this case it was a cat with a bag around his neck! This was about 10 years ago, but the memory of it is etched indelibly in our family history!
Her ears weren't back, and she was being held in a pose that would have made it very easy for her to escape if she wanted to. I'd argue that she isn't hissing, just b*tching. Myow!
Kudos to the firefighters!!! and thank you Bruce Chamber and MSNBC on the photos and story, and putting this on the front page - it is nice to see some good news highlighted!
Yes, thank you Bruce Chamber and MSNBC. I was expecting yet another racist story. That's what you guys do best.
What a wonderful story! Many thanks to the rescuers. A "life" is a "life" - whether human, cat, or dog. They should all be appreciated. Love this story.
But how much it cost to save that life is important too.
@ Mark Taft:
How much would it be worth to you for someone to save your life?
But I'm not an animal (although my girlfriend calls me one).
Of course you're an animal. Humans are animals.
Then again, given some of the comments you've made, maybe you're not that far off the mark. On this planet, there is animal, vegetable, mineral. So if you are not an animal, and if you're alive, I guess the default choice is vegetable.
Except that would be insulting the broccoli...
(Sorry, moderators, he got me going with the 'we shouldn't save pit bulls' remark, I volunteer at an animal shelter that is about 80% pit bulls. I've been snapped at by more cocker spaniels and poodles than pibbles.)
right on Amanda...
humans who choose to forget that they are animals make many excuses for being mean-spirited
Glad to see such an uprising story in the morning! Congrats to the firefighters everywhere who go out of their way to save all living things. Kitty calm down you can groom for the camera later. Just be happy your still with us.
God bless these firemen!
Good Job to the firefighters who are so compassionate to the animals as well as humans. This is why I have an ADT system that will alert fire and police if the alarms sounds, especially if we are not home, I want them to save my little Rat Terrier. I also have a sticker on my front door that lets the fireman/police know that there is a pet inside.
Just an aside.....statistics came out this week that show that people who have never had a cat are FORTY percent more likely to have a stroke or heart attack! It pays to show compassion.....
Nurturing is good for more than the soul.
Cat's name is Alec Baldwin.
Very nice read. Love all them animals I do, more than people actually. Got three cats and three dogs myself and the sweetest of all six? Without question, my Pit.
"the sweetest of all six? Without question, my Pit."
My avatar speaks for itself.
I loved my rottie, may he R.I.P, love my shepherd, he's my old fella, and I love my little pitty. She's such a diva! I have a sign for the front window, got it through ASPCA, that tells firefighters there are animals in the house.
Yes, I want my babies saved, too. Nothing like a feel good story to put you on a high for the weekend. I'm so glad everyone got out.
Well I don't feel good. I just feel my taxes are going up.
I think you just don't feel good. The taxes are a happenstance occurance, with no relation to said emotional unbalance. Did you feel good when Halliburton was charging 1000 per toilet paper roll? Probably. Sweeeeet paper!
But I own stock in Halliburton.
