The Associated Press reports — Fourteen women who lived through the horrors of World War II paraded on stage Thursday night in an unusual pageant, vying for the honor of Israel's first 'Miss Holocaust Survivor'. The unusual event was hosted by an Israeli group that aids Holocaust survivors. Around 20 women, all in their 80s and 90s, told the audience their life stories.
"I have the privilege to show the world that Hitler wanted to exterminate us and we are alive. We are also enjoying life. Thank God it's that way," said Esther Libber, a 74-year-old runner-up who fled her home in Poland as a child, hid in a forest and was rescued by a Polish woman. She said she lost her entire immediate family.
Billed by organizers as a celebration of life, the event also stirred controversy. In a country where millions have been touched by the Holocaust, many argued that judging aging women who had suffered so much on physical appearance was inappropriate, and even offensive. Read the full story.

Beautiful grand dames forged through the fires of tragedy, I applaud them. They're all winners and deserve long, healthy lives.
They deserve to be honored, and they could be giving talks and writing books. A "pageant" would not exactly be considered the right choice to me.. How about all those that we see in pictures that were starving and tortured? However, if they want to do it, I guess it's fine.
The pageant seems disrespectful for all the others that did not make it.Celebrate life by teaching others what it means to have racism and torture.

They should just add an extra tab on the MSNBC website.. Between Home, U.S., World, & Politics; they should put "Holocaust Propaganda", since every day there are two more stories about it. It happend 70 years ago. Genocides are going on in Africa, mass slavery is going on in Africa, Asia & South America but they are not Jewish and have no oil, so guess what. No news on that. I'm glad they lived through it but I do not see how this is a teaching point, other than propaganda. Pathetic.
You may minimize what these women went through and amazingly survived. But I know that what's going on in Africa and other parts of the world cannot compare with the deaths of 6 million jews who were forced into labor camps and exposed to diseases and filthy living conditions, not to mention starved.
Agreed, they are ALL winners. When it's all said and done, they all triumphed in the face of an horrific tragedy by merely surviving. I applaud every single one of them, not one more than the other.

Due to a variety of factors the nazi treatment of the Jews is generally recognized by most historians as the most brutal large scale atrocity in the history of humanity. It involved torture and experimentation on a scale never seen before nor since.This doesn´t mitigate the atrocities in Cambodia,Stalin´s Soviet Union. the horrors done to indigenous people in the America and many others..But the nazis experimented on people on a way that was unprecedented. My uncle covered the Nuremburg trials as a court reporter. And I read about the experiments on live people and babies.There is NOTHING similar in recorded history.Many Germans who survived the war were so ashamed and horrified that they left Germany forever and even didn´t want contact with the German language.As for the Mrs Holocaust survivor.it´s rather in bad taste but no more so than other pageants in the U.S Asia, Latin America and other places.The leaders of the nazis were hung at an international tribunal at Nuremburg and tried and executed as wel .by German courts. .Nothing equivalent has happened in the history of human culture.It must never be forgotten and there is no expiration date for the monsters who committed these crimes!

Unless you are saying the 11,000,000 non-jews that were experimented on, tortured and murdered actually did exist? That was my original argument. Why do we hear about the 6,000,000 Jews that died in the holocaust and the survivors multiple times daily in our news and media services in the USA and most Americans do not even know there were 11,000,000 non jews tortured and murdered in the holocaust? How many of the women in the holocaust pageant do you think were non-jewish? How many non-jewish people do you think have any say in Israeli policy? Maybe a token few with no real authority on the latter, none on the previous. That is the problem with this and that is why it is propaganda.

Problem with your theory is they do not have two stories a day in the United States of America on victims of stalinism, only for the holocaust and then only for the lesser amount of Jews and not the larger amount of other victims of the holocaust. As far as the stories of Stalanism and watching Russian News, why dont I have to watch Israeli News for stuff like holocaust pageants instead of it being on US front pages daily? I think there should be equal time in USA News for every victim not just the Jews.

Or how about a tribute to the Catholic priests. They were not top of the list, but nazis did get to them eventually. If you want to pay tribute to the priests murdered by the nazis, you can count on support from Israel. After all, the previous Pope John Paul II was pretty much a hero to the jews. He was a member of resistance, and he pretty much made peace between Catholic Church and the jews.
So, you see, this particular Israel-supporting jew has plenty of respect for other victims of Holocaust, as do most jews and most Israelis. We''l be happy to pay proper tribute to all our fellow victims in that trugedy, but that does not mean that we plan on forgetting our own losses. I think that's fare.

The words just aren't coming to me on what to say, I can only admire the fortitude these people possess that enabled them to continue on throughout their lives after such tragedy. I too applaud these fine ladies.

What this says is that life, light and goodness triumphs over death, darkness and the evil the nazis perpetrated. There were far too few survivors and to celebrate them is to celebrate what is good in the world and to deny a place for evil. It is ironic that a country built upon the ashes of the destruction of European Jewry and the very epitome of democracy is demonized without cause or reason by detractors bent upon it's destruction. Israel exists where it had been for a reason - "never again" Israel exists for the singular purpose of making this statement a reality.

I know we should never forget, so it will never happen again, but that does not mean we have to always look at the dark side. If that were the case, these ladies and many others would not have survived. Hope, Love, Courage, Optimism....this is what these ladies stand for. I have mixed emotions about this since I dislike pageants of any kind. A celebration of life party for all of the survivors would have been an inclusive and joyful event but then again at their age and after all that they have been through, they can do anything that they want. Congrats to all of the participants. Very pretty ladies, too. Wonderful that Ms. Herman made it to 87 and that she's dancing, as well.
Let me rain on your parade. The Holocaust is over and has been over for many many years. I don't see anyone crowining Ms. Slavery. You can't evoke sympathy the rest of your life for what might have been considered another form of bondage for Israel because of their disobedience to God just like Babylon because they had no business over there in the first place. I wish people repaid us for slavery the way they reward you guys for the Holocaust and God only knows how many African/Blacks were destroyed during the days of slavery as well as degraded and demeaned and let us not forget the degregation we suffered during the civil rights era. Black antisemitism is one of the great ironies. That many Jews were at the forefront of the civil rights movement buys them no support from people like you. The dysfunctional nature of the black family, with 75% of black mothers under 30 being unwed, has contributed greatly to the present state of destruction and crime in many black communities. Without slavery to blame, you'd have to accept responsibility for your own failures.
Israel is a modern, successful, Western-style democracy that was built by many people who experienced an attempt to systematically kill them, not just enslave them. Alternatively, Zimbabwe became a failed state after it ceased being Rhodesia.

Arwen, as much as I dislike pageants of any kind, I disagree. Read frogcycle's post at #8 for a very different perspective. They have nothing to be ashamed of and everything to be proud of at this point in their lives. There is nothing trivial about any of this.

It is indeed true that Jews played a very important role in the civil rights movement, and made many sacrifices (including death) for it. Jews were among the founders of the NAACP. Jews also benefited from the civil rights movement, as there was quite a bit of discrimination against Jews.
Lack of education and unemployment have contributed greatly to family instability in the black community. (The offshoring of jobs, the cutting of federal budgets and the spending of huge funds for wars rather than for education have have seriously affected the black community) An unemployed male, who can barely support himself, is less likely to ask a woman's hand in marriage than one who can support both himself and a family. But the affects of slavery should not be minimized: they have been long lasting, and CAN be blamed for many of the ills and attitudes within the black community (as well as attitudes within the white community). You don't rape thousands of young black girls with impunity, and then expect for them to pass on to their children (whose white fathers they might not even know) the importance of marriage and family. You don't, for 400 years, take thousands of black families and split them up on the auction block, and then expect for stable attitudes about family to develop overnight among the auctioned off children or their children. Things which happened years ago affect people to this day. An example: researchers (who confined their studies to whites) determined that a main reason why the South leads the nation in violence is because of the people who settled it hundreds of years ago. Two main groups settled the South, Scottish herders and English noblemen. The Scottish herders, far from police stations, brought with them a history of do-it-youself law enforcement. The other, English noblemen, brought a tradition of defending ones honor, even if death in a duel might be the result. To see whether those attitudes persisted to this day, the researchers deliberately insulted New England and southern students. Insults which the New Englanders would generally laugh off, tended to enrage the southerners. (The researchers didn't include blacks in their studies, but 400 years of close association with southern whites just might have had an affect.)

What a great program! Setting aside my distaste for the whole beauty contest thing in general, these ladies who endured so much and are now in their twilight years had a chance to do something really "girlish" and from the pictures had a wonderful time doing it. All the fussing over them to get hair and makeup done, fancy clothes, the pomp and circumstance of the pageant, and doubtless the camaraderie they shared in the course of it allowed them to relax and have fun, enjoy being themselves. That they were involved because of what they endured has to in some small way reduce the awfulness of those memories. Maybe its just a band-aid for the wounds, but what a cool one. Kudos to the organizers!

World War II ended 70 odd years ago, so why are we still trying to relive the horrors of war or "forcing" our memories to never forget its' devastation on the humane race? May the celebrating end when the last survivor dies! Great Britain and the USA both denied a boat load of Jewish people entry during WWII so why is only Germany persecuted for so many deaths? That simple act sent a message to Hitler that WE didn't care. Let's celebrate our disgrace!!

I think the one point missed was that the women told their life stories. they told again what they and millions of others went thru. the point being that they remember and as an example say never again. On the one hand, I agree with many of you who say that they are all beautiful people who should be applauded.
On the other hand, I think this event trivializes everything they have lived through. A pageant? Really? You must be f ucking kidding me.
BTW: the Holocaust didn't actually originate with the Nazi's. They learned all their policies and techniques from eugenicists in the US and Britain. It was all the rage from the turn of the century right up till the time that the bad old Nazi's started to muddy the waters.
The Concentration Camps? Hitler credited the US and Britain once again for that. US Army Indian Department for the Reservation System and the colonialist Brits for what they did to the Boers of South Africa in the 1890's.
Hitler wasn't the first and sure as all heck won't be the last (man destroying his fellow man for personal gain). He simply was the most efficient up till that time.
