A mahout moves an elephant to higher ground as villagers paddle with their belongings through flood waters in the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, some 55 km from Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, India on June 28, 2012.

Raging floodwaters fed by monsoon rains have inundated more than 2,000 villages in northeast India, sweeping away homes and forcing more than 850,000 people to flee their homes.

Floodwaters have submerged 90 per cent of a wildlife sanctuary in Assam, forcing rhinos and other wild animals to shelter in the woodland of the park which is located at a higher altitude.

This happens periodically in that part of the world. The people who live there know it is going to happen. The sad (and un-reported) part of this story is that there are hundreds of thousands waiting to take the place of the victims because the flooded ground is so fertile.

I'll bet the US state dept. can't wait to throw money at the problem! India is no friend of the US. They offer no help with Afghanistan or other areas that would help us. Keep the money here for use in America!

India has not asked for money! By the way India is more than a friend but less than an ally. What that means India being a big country wants to chart its own course - sometimes it is with the US sometimes it is not. And then you have Pakistan to its west and China to its north to complicate matters. India prefers US to disengage with Pakistan when dealing with Afghanistan but that is not happening.

India is not your door mat!

Not all women of world have the privilege to decide the use of Birth Control, I don't believe over population is a choice, but sometimes the lack of choices....

After watching a 3 hours documentary on french tv about Global warming, I found this post... People better read it because we are going straight into the wall ! The whole world, is. Europeen scientists say that if we do not change our ways, we are doomed and all these topics you fight about, will no longer matter ! 2011 has seen the worst catastrophes and it is just the begining ! It is predicted that 5 years from now, the whole south west of the united states will go DRY !

If anyone needs to be held accountable, it should be propagators of skepticism, denial and the verifiable dissemination of misinformation, lies and the intentional generation of reasonable doubt!

There needs to be a new legal precedence set similar to libelous slander that allows for the prosecution of any person, to include corporations that contribute to the creation of false information, lies, distractions, obstruction and the delay of critical actions needed to save this Planet. The mass media should be considered an accessories and lose their broadcasting licences as a penalty. Opinions should no longer be able to trump science, facts, evidence, eye witnesses or the truth.

The billions in subsidies now given to the fossil fuels industries, which are the most profitable and destructive forces in the world, need to loose those every penny of those funds. Our tax dollars that have been hijacked for many decades now need to be used for renewable energy, R & D and the establishment of a loose/prevention fund to help cover the expense of the disasters we will be dealing with for a very long time to come.

2012 can mark a turning point, it can be the end of the world or a new beginning. We still can take control of our future and remove those in power that have contributed to the situation we now must deal with, or we can continue to watch what we once had slip away right before our eyes.

Climate change is a planet cycle we are just here for the ride.. all we can do is buckle up when the road gets rough. Mitigation and preparedness is our only tools ... Nothing is going to stop climate change until it has ran its course

Wow, so in that one photo of the guy on the elephants back. Lets say that Elephant drops down just another inch or two? That would be an ugly sight for both the guy and his pet. Awesome snorkel he has though, I never thought they would completely submerge themselves and stay so calm!

When extremely corrupt politicians, as in India, are in power, even nature is angry......

Time for the USA, India's ally against China, to help........
