As in many developing nations, international aid is both an invaluable help to South Sudan and a crutch that sometimes enables it to avoid reality. Reuters reports — Nowhere is South Sudan's dependence on the outside world more clear than in its health system.
The people of Africa's newest nation — which celebrated its first birthday on Monday — face cholera, measles, meningitis, polio, river blindness, sleeping sickness, yellow fever and whooping cough. Malaria accounts for a quarter of all hospital visits. South Sudan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Around one in six children die within their first year.
And there are just 120 doctors and 100 nurses in a country of 8 million. Foreign governments and other donors gave just under $1 billion or so in aid in 2010, and around four-fifths of all health care is provided by outside groups. Read the full story.

A U.N. helicopter lands at the airstrip in Pibor on June 26, 2012. Development experts have grown more sophisticated in recent decades about how they deliver aid. But in fragile states such as South Sudan, getting the balance right between helping a country and helping that country help itself remains incredibly difficult.

Hey that sounds an awful lot like our new health tax care plan, maybe we could sue for copyright infringement, I heard their dollar is alot stronger than ours .... no wait I just figured it out.. high speed rail that will fix it and then a few hundred rounds of golf and have some drones patrolling the country and to really eliminate the problem a carbon tax.. man this is tough work figuring all this shhhtuff out.. I'm bushed, oops.... sorry! It's Bushes fault, that stuff won't work back to the drawing board.
Did anyone read the statistic which said about 1 in 6 die their first year? I wonder how many make it to age 5. Without a surviving child, the parents will starve to death when they're too old to work. So they keep having them in the hope 1, maybe even 2, might make it. Health care isn't much good to peole who have starved to death. They need social security.
Nothing reduces the birth rate like a guaranteed retirement. In the U.S. there were almost 4 children per family until FDR signed Social Security into law. The immediate drop was affected by the Depression & WWII, but afterwards even the Baby Boom only brought the birth rate up to 2.4. It's been declining ever since.
So what do you want to bet the South Sudanese birth rate is about 6. One them will be dead within a year, & who knows how many will be gone within the next 40 years. Then mom & dad are left for the lions to eat.
Music:
So let usnot have 6 baies born and only 1 or 2 so that resources spent on 4 who are going to dies are saved and spent on two to make them helathy and productive.
It's easy to see why our nation is in ruins by looking at the African nations leadership. Africa would thrive, and far exceed the USA GDP should all the African nations have white leadership.
When I get a decent health care program where I don't have to pay every time I go to the doctor out of pocket, then I will worry about the AMERICANS next door. Since I doubt I am ever going to get decent health care in my lifetime, I doubt I am ever going to get around to worrying about the Sudanese. I don't even want to hear about it. How are the middle class and the working poor supposed to feel sorry for all these people in other countries?
Whoa,
What a bunch of negative, unfeeling, crude posters Here!!
You need to set your standards real low so you're never disapointed!:)
WOW Maybe we should trade all of our pharmacudicals/Doctors who sell us death. No one is held accountable. Amazing how this rag can report this story but ignore how our big pharma co's kill us on crap they know will kill us yet are allowed to push their drugs as our FDA is a revolving door for these criminals. Look up Phizer, Merk Glasco Smith Kline pays fines for FRAUD.
If you would all recall, we put time and money into the phillipines and cuba MANY years ago. We educated them, instead of training them and arming them, we gave them schools and hospitals and tried to turn them into fair democracies. Guess what happened?
Filipinos butchered US soldiers in a guerilla war and destroyed our gifts in wasted hatred.
Cuban guerillas who we thought were 'good guys' butchered Spanish soldiers who weren't even corrupt, then, many years later, you-know-who carried a nuclear launch site on the island after we had helped him set up what was meant to be a democracy.
Are they not third world countries today because of their ignorance? We need to learn from what our first president said, let's not get any more politically involved than we already are. America, whether we believe it or not: is still a thriving landscape of natural wonder and rich heritage with the toughest patriots in the world. When a real crisis comes, we'll get up, pat ourselves off, and mobilize what can only be defined as the best armies the world will ever know. We were born in war, if you all remember: dirty, gritty war.
Of course they butchered Americans. We sided with that very small percentage of extraordinarily rich bottom feeders passing themselves off as leaders. The majority were enslaved & exploited, & anyone who resisted was torture & killed.
Fidel was a ruthless, torturing, tyrant, but still a notch up from Batista. Sort of like being prettier than Roseanne Barr.
I understand your mentality, but it's misplaced, the schools and hospitals were open to the public, and we did try to help the poor as well as the rich. And Fidel was only corrupt after he had attained power, as a guerilla leader, he had charmed the public with his patriotic qualities, how else would he have acquired his status? The Cuban people elected him to power. And, Castro isn't smart enough to trick everyone to believing him. He truly did have the best interests of the people at heart, power corrupted him.
They won't use birth control anyway. It's suicide. They'll be left to starve when they're too old to work.
Wonder if the Sudan will suffer the same fate?
It's funny how many here use sarcasm against Obama and think they can predict the future. Bush couldn't fix anything in 8 years and that's known history.
Continue with your bitterness and maybe someday it'll take it's toll and help you deal with the world and life a little better.
At least Obama is adding bankrupting the country to his known history.
We are hated all over the world because of our policys that have affected entire countries. If we all of a sudden said that we are not supporting any other country, except our own, everyone would still hate us. It's like giving someone something and then taking it away. Why don't some of the developed nations take the lead for a change? Or at least teach the masses there how to practice birth control
I have noticed that this site have become a haven for racsist bigots. Worse situation I have seen since the 50's in Louisiana. People a lot of hate. It would be nice if Joe six pack knew who the real enemy is. Alas he does not he actually think that people of color is the problem since again we are a different hue. He should have been around 12000 yrs ago and self hate would have been easier.
It always get me they never show the downtowns of any country in Africa. Since I have travel there the foolishness that goes on to keep most people stupid is beyond me. Wake up people you are being used to spread hate and stupidy. Pretty soon we will need each other to fight the real enemy....that will be real soon in a few years. Wake up hate less and research more on what has happen and who has caused these problems for almost 600 yrs.
South Sudan was created because the oil was causing their people to be killed. Yes oil. The Chinese wanted the oil but the people had to go. Do your research the area is full of oil. Africans simply want peace and take care of their family. Talk to one not just sending out all this hate. Take the time to know one.
Mitt and the repubs are just peeved that they didn't get to pandering of different voting blocks first AWWW! And now they cry foul. Folks they really ARE not that smart.
With this example of the left, doesn't sound like they are doing very well either.
The high number of deaths in these poor African nations can be traced directly back to aid from countries like the US.
Before bleeding hearts started trying to "help", there was balance. The land can support X number of people. When the population goes over that, people die off. People see these masses of people dying in huge numbers, and want to stop it, so they donate. So, more people don't die, they live to reproduce. Making more and more people above and beyond what the land can sustain.
People trying to save the world have only made the problem worse. There is no good solution to the sickness and death in these countries. But walking away, and letting Darwinism do what it does is the "least bad".
What is more humane, to let a person die today, or two die tomorrow?
Exactly why I support all forms of family planning, including abortion, thanks for making that point for me...as if the US population is sustainable on just what we produce...think before you type!
Think before I type?
Did I say something against family planning and abortion? I'm a huge fan of both.
Why don't you think before you type instead of just making stupid assumptions about what I might believe.
After the o-no death bill and the ungodly dem-A-rats get finished, this will be what the U.S. looks like.
16.5 TRILLION in debt and 5 + TRILLION is due the devil in office, worst in history.. He has Bankrupt wealth, and the moral structure, Lies, divided a country, anything to break the dollar and faith in Jesus Christ.
A president that says one day in America it will be just as honorable for a man and man to marry as it is for a man and a woman. This is another lie and disgrace in the face of God and his only Son Jesus.
Repent America of the ungodliness and sins and Trust in Jesus He is the only way and hope. Unless you like it real Hot for eternity enjoy this life because you are Dammed already in the next life without Christ.
Trust In Him (KJV only)
Oh brother, go find a deserted street corner to rant.
Jesus said - "Judge not, lest ye likewise be judged". Did you read the things he said about, & to the rich? He said "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and unto God that which is God's". Apparently he was for the separation of church & state. Did you know Jesus blessed the peacemakers?
Worse, he overturned the tables of the money changers. No. Don't cry. They got him for it. In less than a week he was arrested with the help of a confidential informant. He was tried, subjected to coercive interrogation, & executive in less than 24 hours. I know what you're thinking, "Why can't our justice system be that efficient?"
Bill your way out of line we're discussing the Sudanese people here, they're just too weak and stupid to figure things out for themselves and they need a bigger government to do everything for them... just like us!
God's birth control. They have overcrowding as it is and they have no infrastructure, no education, and no money.
Isn't that ObamaCare?
When you have fully converted a society to depend on outside "aid", this is the ultimate result. How many of those people are advocating taking matters into their own hands to do something about their situation?
Better just to sit around and wait for your "ration" to be passed out. Nothing will ever change there no matter how much they are "given".
How are the Africans living in America any different?
Lloyd:
The biggest mistake we are making is throw money and hope problems will be solved. Experience over last 60 years have show it, it does not happen.
We lack intelligent commitment to solving problems and succumbed to emotional often moral sounding solutions. This neither solves the problem nor find us a way to solve it. Toge excess of poor sub-par population cannot be sustained. Darwin's thesis proves that much that to try to sustain population that cannot be on their own in limited time space, can destroy whole community or a nation. One has to be judicious and accept certain collateral damages in solving problem affecting large communities.
There is presumptions that without increasing resources we can sustain large birth rate and low death rate by sheer force of medicine. That perhaps we can, but we cannot create sustainable productive society out of that. For that 1 + 2 = 3 kind of calculation has to be real. We cannot say it to be 5 because we think it is moral. It is not moral. It is delusional that has catastrophic consequences for larger communities.
120 doctors for an entire nation? Sounds like Obama care to me.
Sounds like ObamaCare. Full coverage with no care.
There are a lot of ignorant, self-absorbed people on this site. Did you know that US policy pushed by major religions prevent something as simple as condoms and birth control from being sent to much of Africa using tax payer dollars? Those hateful people in congress that you support are preventing family planning and increasing the spread of the AIDS virus in Africa in order to secure religious votes...talk about hypocrisy!
Thanks to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for trying to correct this horrible tragedy by stepping in where government fails.
Obama throw money at problems, because he has no idea what else to do about it. He has no experience with being poor only pompous.. He has no kindness in him only showboating for the votes, That is why he was elected, he is like a shiny bell in a bird cage no real purpose just noise and shine, to distract the bird from the fact he is in the cage and not free.
Its pathetic that this is happening in our day and age.
Where's the hand up conservatives are always willing to lend? Or can't they tell the difference between a hand up, & a hand out?
The president should , by executive order, declare all of these folks to be illegal immigrants ( even though they are still in Sudan ).
Having done that, they will have coverage under Obamacare.
Come on. To solve problems, think outside the box !!
Please Obama, Send billions in aid to the Sudan so that the people can get more doctors. Americans are willing to pay the additional cost. They don't complain about the tens of billions we give to other countries while the US goes further in debt so why would they complain if you send 20 billion to the Sudan?
