People stay on the rooves of their houses due to floods in Marikina City, east of Manila, on August 9, 2012.

Reuters reports — The Philippines began a massive clean-up on Thursday after floods swept the capital and nearby provinces, forcing residents to wade through shoulder-deep waters in some places after nearly two weeks of monsoon rains killed 91 people.

Power, water and communications services were restored as floodwaters started to recede, allowing many to return home to fix their houses. Nearly 300,000 people remained in temporary shelters, disaster officials said. Read the full story.

These are some sad picts. to look at. The majority of people in the Philippines have very little to begin with.

I'll be back in Manila next week, and my wife has been detailing the flooding first hand...it is bad...but just for the sake of clarity...Most of the pictures here are of "squatter areas", what most of us would call "slums"...and though Philippines Cities and the Philipines as a whole are a poor country, most people there, do live a life that wouldn't and doesn't look like these photos

True story about the squatter areas. Next to floods, their biggest threat is a pending visit by the Pope, then thousands have their shacks bulldozed to make nice along the Pasig River.

Used to live in the far east and it is the time of year that the monsoons come. I mean heavy continuous rain. Bless those people.

These people are smart enough to build tall, even with such poverty. We, on the other hand, just reconstructed an entire city that sits below sea level at ground level.

spoke to att tech support yesterday---phone center is in phillipines. got irritated with her lack of ability to correct problem. these pictures put my problem in perspective. air conditioning knocked out my tv / internet connection--minor problem compared to their problems.

If it was suck a big problem for the tech, they would not have been at work. Customer service should never suffer when the job has been ripped from our shores and sent away.

Please build these homes on stilts and construct boardwalks between the homes.

My prayers are with the people of the Phillipines. God bless and protect them.

And God, give us some insight into the human condition. Here in America, so many people have more than enough yet, they still want everything they see. We have Billionaires that could make this World a much better place but instead they go around and buy 200K cars for themsleves and 5 million dollar homes for 1 to 3 people to live in. I think that is the very definition of Hell on earth. Half suffer and die and the other half live in comfort and could care less. Maybe if the World does end in 2012 this year, the next race of beings on this Planet will be much smarter than we turned out to be.

The whole of Asia is flooding, not just PI. China, Korea, and Thailand are under water in many lowland areas.

It's never been this bad from I have known, and think it will only get worse.

I have relatives who just returned to the US from a mission trip to the Philippines. You would thing they would be concerned about the welfare of the people they went there to minister to, but no. Not one word even acknowledging the problems down there or even asking for prayers for these people. Must have been a successful trip -- a foreign vacation paid for by some church somewhere. One local guy went on a 'mission trip' to Fiji last year and all he did when he got back was complain about the condition of their golf courses. Some 'mission trip'. Maybe these 'missionaries' need to stay home and minister to the poor people in America who live in similar conditions -- except our golf course sucks, too.
