Offerings made to elephant killed by train in India

A villager offers flowers to a female adult elephant lying dead in a paddy field in Panbari village, India, Saturday, Sept. 1. The elephant was hit by a train and killed while crossing railway tracks with a herd of wild Asiatic elephants.

The reverence shown here is something missing in so many places in the world today. The photo is beautiful and respectful at the same time. Congratulations to the photographer!

Reverence and beauty, true. It's nice knowing people care about the creatures, big and small, on earth. It's also difficult to understand the caste system in India and elsewhere where humans are not treated with as much respect and concern.

I guess I'm not clear where we got the idea that human life takes precedence over all other living beings. Was it religion?

All life matters. From the tiniest micro-organism to the biggest whale in the ocean. We are but one of many amazing creatures.

Bless this woman for showing concern and care for this beautiful elephant. We need a lot more of this and a lot less adoring ourselves.

Great photo. I can't believe the people running these trains aren't more respectful of the wild life instead of blowing through the area at a high rate of speed. Stupid.

I wouldn't trust any human being that had no respect for animals. It says a lot about one's character.

This is a beautiful picture. Paying respects is loving-no matter if creature or man.
