Protests ignited by a controversial film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad spread throughout Muslim world.

NBC News staff and wire reports -- Protesters in a number of countries across the Muslim world vented anger against the West on Friday as the controversy over an anti-Islamic film raged, with a KFC restaurant torched in Lebanon, violent attacks on U.S. embassies in Sudan and Tunis and fierce protests in Egypt, Jordan and Pakistan.

U.S. embassies and consulates are braced for trouble on the Muslim day of prayer, when demonstrations are often held, following the attack on the consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

These countries surely hurt themselves and their economy over some silly issues. Anyone who would react violently when their "magical man in the sky" (Mohammed, Allah) is supposedly insulted must think their "god" image is so fragile that they have to defend its honor. How insecure! If they were confident about their religion, they would laugh off insults or pray for those who don't believe like them. This violence is childish; no wonder most of the protestors are young (probably unemployed) men without a decent education or future.

If anyone was wondering about the yellow star sign with the smily face, Carl's Jr. owns the Hardee's chain and has the agreement to do business in the Arab world.

Looks like Anthony Bourdain chose a window in 2010 to re-do his Lebanon food show when it was relatively quiet there. In 2006, his crew had to evacuate due to violence and today I'm sure he would have to do the same. Too bad, Lebanon used to and could be a beautiful country and attract tourism if they cleaned up their act.

Notice they are not dressed poorly either. We are being led to believe by NBC that these protesters are uneducated and more radical. I am not buying that only a few hates us. Polls taken over the past years show hate going up for Americans.

Jeff- you're half right but given their prevalence to show violence and kill people continuously because of their "beliefs" what do you propose us non fanatics do about this? Talk it over? Because that seems to work well- Tell people NOT to upset them with any type of freedom of speach? You can be passionate about your beliefs and thoughts and non-violent BUT these people did not get the memo nor do they want to conform with the rest of the adult, non stone age mentality, world. What's your approach?

It's not looking good when they go after KFC.

On the other hand, a certain proportion of these anti-American demonstrators are just over-excited, hostile, frustrated young men with nothing better to do. They are your garden variety vandals and hooligans, and they'll get bored soon enough and go home. In the meantime, we need to stay calm and carry on.

Fortunately, we have a Commander-in-Chief with a steady hand on the wheel.

This whole thing with instigated by some Egyptian guy making an anti Islamic film, on 9/11 no less…… That sure sounds fishy to me. Wouldn’t it be interesting if in a month or so we discover that this film was actually produced by some Muslim terrorist group just to set up the U.S. to take the blame? I'm not usually into conspiracy theories but this one sounds plausible to me.

All we have to do is get off oil from the middle east. They have nothing else of value. Then cut off all investments and businesses (such as the ones they're burning) in these countries. Then, freeze all accounts that do business with these countries and pass a law making it illegal to do so in the future. Also, ban all travel to and from extremist harboring countries to the US. They will simply wither as the world gives them what the want.... isolation. They act like complete idiots over a stupid movie no one has even seen.

Oh yeah I almost forgot, stop putting a camera in front of them!!!! This only encourages them to act like this.

The anger is not just about Religion. American military goes into a country, clears the way for all the Corporations to take over Putting Small Business of that Country out of work, and then tries to culturize them into the buy, buy, buy ways of Capitalism. American Corporate should not be there! If these people chose to buy American products, let them buy from our shores made by Americans. Get the Vultures out. Like some are saying - this probably has very little to do with the film, and may present an even bigger problem of Middle East policies spinning out of control. The movie is just an excuse - even to the most uneducated person over there, the connections between the movie and this country are completely nonsensical.

99.9% of Americans probably wouldn't have even known the movie existed - destined to fade into obscurity - had they not brought such attention to it.

Other rioters could also simply be opportunists and jumping on the bandwagon for the hell of it. Mob mentality.

I don't foresee this getting better any time soon, sadly.

i don't see the movie as an excuse, rather a trigger. There were some very valid comments in this thread about squalor and jealousy. The best breeding ground for terrorists are those living in poverty. How many RICH people blow themselves up?

One thing to bear in mind, this is as much a CULTURE issue as it is a religoius one. Westernized, middle class Muslims don't do this, they condemn it. You see poor, middle eastern Muslims doing this. We do tend to forget the CULTURAL aspect and dwell totally on the religoius one.

Also ... I think the producer of this movie knew very well what would happen and, in some way, should be held responsible. Yes, we have "freedom of speech" ... but with that feedom comes responsibility ... and consequences.

Sadly, I don't see it ending any time soon either.

What many of you fail to understand is the cultural and political differences that exist between countries. Here, we exercise freedom of speech/expression; in many other countries, the government censors much of what is considered offensive. There is an implicit assumption over there that since our government did not prevent the movie from being produced and the trailer going out on the Internet, then it approved the movie. Hence the violent response. They don't understand the fact that mindless idiots over here have a right to free speech and can produce moronic and offensive drivel that many of us, including the government do not approve.

Don't buy the Squalor/Envy line. It is a religious/cultural thing. Yes, "westernized" middle class Muslims do commit terrorist attacks. Look at the 4 Muslim doctors who planned and attempted to carry out a series of attacks in Britain and Scotland. Look at Army Major Hassan Nidal who is currently standing trial for murdering 13 people in a military intake building at Ft Hood, TX. He's a licensed psychiatrist and grew up in the US. How about the Army enlisted man who was planning another attack at Ft Hood but was arrested following a tip from a gun shop owner that found his actions "odd" and notified police? He was born and raised in the US. He grew up in a nice suburb of Dallas. This is a cultural thing and won't change until the moderate/modern Muslims start shutting down and condemning the radical imams. Once they stop funding the radical Imam, the moderate imams starting issuing fatwahs against the radical ones and the governments of the middle east start rounding them up and making them disappear, the situation will improve. Until then, anything less than simply destroying each and every radical imam and as many of their followers as possible will have minimal impact.

It's far too easy to radicalize the youth in any population through adequate propaganda. Look at how radical the Ron Paul followers are. The guy may have some good ideas, but that doesn't mean he's always right. Same thing goes for the New Black Panther Party and the Nation of Islam. They all use the few good ideas that they have as the basis to legitimize their positions, then proceed to claim that since their basic premise is valid, their radical ideas are as well. Christianity grew out of this phase in the 17th century with the 30 years war, the Spanish Inquisition, and the English Civil War. At least most of Christendom did. The Irish were still violently fighting Catholics versus Protestants until the late 90s. There are still some radical Christians, <cough> Westboro Baptist <cough> but the bulk of the Christendom considers them to be nutcases and as long as they don't resort to violence they are allowed to spew their stupidity. Until the governments of the Islamic countries crack down on the radical imams, the fate of the world is in question. The only option that the US has is to stop ALL visas for people from Islamic countries and imprison ANY imam promoting violence.

They destroy their own city's and infrastructure every day in the middle east. Then Obama sends them hundreds of millions to fix it all.

                        They don't care.

PDubb - History? Our foreign policy? Obama is the commander in chief - the prez - the guy who works on foreign policy along with Congress in the best interest of all of the American People. Noninterventionism is also American foreign policy. Historically. It's kind of a pick and choose thing. Obama has chosen to give taxpayer money away to nations undeserving of it. He has chosen to continue to war. Do you think he'll take actions to stop these things - to put American's first? Watch and see. It's more History in the making.

Look when there was regime changes, there were winners and losers. Do you think all the losers just conceded and are happily living with those they disagree with? The loyalists didn't go anywhere. The US threw Mubarak under the bus. Some are happy with that and some are not. Qaddafi was taken out by NATO. Do you think everybody was happy with that decision?

Look at Iraq. The Sunni were in charge and now they are not. Do you think they are happy with the Shiite in control? Who do you think they blame?

@KIKI : You forget that you also sent them plenty of bombs and plenty of support for the dictators that took their freedom away for decades. No wonder they hate America.

You'll notice that in Lybia, immediately after the embassy attack, thousands and thousands of Lybians marched to ask for forgiveness and claiming that the mob didn't represent lybians. Why ? Because the US didn't actually support Ghaddaffi and helped overthrow him.

No such thing in Egypt, Tunisia, etc... where the US supported the dictator in place for decades, so obviously people over there hate the US.

Iraq was the only country in the region that kept Iran at bay and then, in our infinite wisdom, we destroyed Iraq. It seems the USA and the west are doing everything in their power to make sure there is an end to the world due to our foreign policy. This is my conspiracy theory.

You are an idiot......this has nothing to do with Obama. An Egyptian made that film using a false American name.

No you're the idiot. Evil Religion thugs are taking American lives and threatening American interests. What may have pushed them over the edge to do this is inconsequential. It is the President's OBLIGATION to put a stop to it.

None of them are towelheads and I am 100% sure most of them are not the hardline radicals as are being shown on media. Showing that on media makes for good news and viewership. These are thugs and hoodlums ...they wear the latest jeans and use facebook more than most people posting here on this forum. They want trouble...I wouldn't even be surprised if they are being paid to do this. They have pent up anger, they want freebies ( like many others ) and this gives them an opportunity to cause destruction w/o a fear of being arrested.

Hey you camel jockeys those are franchises! Now some Lebaneese are out of work because of your 5th century thinking. How about coming on up to the 20th century and yes I know it's the 21st century......

Dilbert, their thinking may be different from yours, I wouldn't believe its 5th century. They prop up that 5th century scroll paper as a good excuse, one that is indeed often not subjected to scrutiny. They are angry, thugs, they want a lot of goodies and they want it yesterday. The only language they listen to and understand is FEAR. All this high and mighty speeches given by leaders are just a hogwash for them. The best way to deal with them is to keep them busy. The issue is , we have kept them busy in the wrong ways for decades..outsourcing dirty wars , unrest etc. They have been used as foot soldiers. Now they are genetically and culturally programmed to shoot and create mayhem.

Give them the fear of a rule of law , not the way their dictator tyrants did but genuine fear of genuine law. They will scuttle back to their caves in seconds. They are basically cowards.

I say, use them in a way that they have zero time for Friday prayers and thuggish behavior.

Well what have they gained? There is no reasoning with a gang of malcontents. I worked with a man who came from Eygpt and He told me why he left his home land. There is no reasoning once they become upset.

KFC in Lebanon has decided to change their name from Kentucky Fried Chicken to Koran Fried Chicken in honor of their prophet. Oh wait, that would be an image of their prophet and backfire. Never mind.
