Sarey Amadou, 14, poses in her bedroom in the remote village of Hawkantaki, Niger, July 20. Even though the boy she had a crush on offered a dowry for her, her father insisted that she marry her first cousin, who lives several hours away in the larger village of Guidan Roumdji. Even during the best of times, one out of every three girls in Niger marries before her 15th birthday, a rate of child marriage among the highest in the world, according to a UNICEF survey. Now this custom is being layered on top of a crisis. At times of severe drought, parents pushed to the wall by poverty and hunger are marrying their daughters at even younger ages. A girl married off is one less mouth to feed, and the dowry money she brings in goes to feed others.
This drought-prone country of 16 million is so short on food that it is ranked dead last by international aid organization Save the Children in the percentage of children receiving a "minimum acceptable diet."

Although her mother denies that poverty played a role in precipitating the marriage, Rama says her family would normally have waited at least one more year. "It's because the rainy season was not good that I was married off, and because we are very poor."

She was taken to his village, Kintee, where she now lives with him. "My father has three wives and 23 kids. There are lots of problems at home. I think it was for this reason that they married me."Last year, before the start of the harvest, there were 10 girls in Hawkantaki between the ages of 11 and 15. By spring 2012, seven were married, and another two are engaged.

So, is it because they're poor or is it because the men are perverts who will take a bride while she's still technically a child? I'm a little grossed out.
Oddly, it's a combination... the families need to get rid of the child to afford to eat... By getting the dowry they get what they need... if it means trading them to perverts... so be it
Hunger is a nasty taskmaster
How can these people be this poor while their country has the Largest Uranium Deposits In The World?
They must be mining some of it.
Not to take sides, I know to us in today's America this is considered perverted. To them it is a normal way of life and has been for ages.
But let's not forget that is was the same in the early days of America and still occurs today even though it is illegal.
Child brides are not a new thing and have/do occur in cultures all over the world.
Africa is the Rape Capital of the World and that includes child-rape - this story only confirms that
....where else on earth do you have people that make up a superstition that having sex with an infant cures the Aids virus to satisfy their perverted desires?
Robbopaloobop, your response is far from the truth. There is a large number of Christians in Africa and they stand against rape. Christians in Africa do not allow child marriage.
You think I'm making that up? There are more children raped in Africa than anywhere on the planet, Christians notwithstanding.
Ruled by ignorant beliefs and superstition, Africans are easy prey for voodoo "priests", witch doctors, sorcerers and other fakes. The same continent where Albino people are killed and eaten for their so-called magical powers
....don't be so quick to pat yourself on the back, my friend
I agree with Mike. We here in the West tend to judge others in terms of our cultural values when they literally do not apply.
The same mistake is made when Westerners try to place our ideas onto Muslims. Their belief system is 180 degrees out from ours.
In other regions of the world the cultures should be judged in the context of their belief system and as long as a person is not being tortured or killed as in Islam, then what difference does it make to us?
Their are many cultures and customs that seem strange to us. With all of the cultural conflicts going on around the world, I recently began to study Eunucks. Wow, that is a big WOW, in how my perception of the subject was wrong. It is curently practiced today and has been going on since the beginning of civilizations. They wre not just slaves in the practical text, but were raised to high levels of government. It is interesting stuff. Google it.
The practice of teenaged brides is not at all uncommon. Especially in terms of political marriage arrangements of the past where very young children were married to grown men. As perverted as it sounds, the practice to them was sound and accepted. Selling daughters (or sons) was spoken of in the Old Testament as slavery was a very respectable social system. This practice was also recognized in Europe as late as the 19th century. And as we see here, is still paracticed today. Why is it so bad if the result is a safe home for the girl?
I am not arguing for the practice, but why must we feel a need to impose our will onto others when physical harm is not being done? The hypocracy of this argument, to me, comes into play when we, Barry, is trying to go to bed with the Muslims who gladly murder their women and children in the name of God every day?
Murdered for God, is not an excuse to subjugate all the women in a totalitarian, male dominated society. But they shout and scream when someone openly critisizes them. I read today where the bounty was raised on the man how wrote the book on Islam.
When I read articles like this and as the one yesterday about the Amish here in America, I get the impression we are being fed news that is an ofhanded comparison of Apples to Oranges scenero that is intended to show the Muslims are not all that bad. What do you think?
Lazarus
Oh so I guess we are going to go over there and make those people act civilized too. Thats their culture. They don't know any better. I'm sure they are happy in their own little way. They've lived that way for 1000's of years, except for the cell phone parts. Cell phone=no food. OK
I want to know if they are so poor why is there a picture of the men charging their cell phones? I would think the money they use to pay that bill could be used for food...
Since you are so worried about it, why don't you go there and feed them. You seem pretty judgemental, behind your nicely fed belly.
Islam - enemy of the world
...and we think we are at war now...we all better get our heads out of the sand and stand united against this world scourge. I feel badly for the many Muslims who are genuinely people of peace. But I have no problem transcending the "western world view" to state that this religion is one of bondage, not freedom or peace. They bring God to their level, to man's perspective. Many wonderful Muslims are kept from truly knowing the true and living God, who would never advocate keeping women as property or sexual slavery as this article states.
CAN we all say --MO-HAM....MO-HAM....IF you noticed these are MUSLIMS---and MO was a PEDO---Guess all a YOUNG girl is worth AND can be bought for is $100---NIGER---wonder how MANY ARABS are BUYING there these days!
OF course the MUSLIMES will say THIS is ALLOWED !! Some GREAT RELIGION---allowing PEDOS free pick!
The don't have cell phone "bills". They put money credit towards the phones and use it until it runs out. It's a pay as you go system. And the phones you can get for dirt cheap since they're made in China. They're not walking around with iPhones paying $150 a month. (We could have this system here if the phone companies did not rely on unnecessarily locking us in to their specific service with our phones.) The use of cell phones actually save them money since they can connect cheaply with other people instead of driving or paying for a regular phone service.
Larry,
You are talking absolute nonsense.
"In other regions of the world the cultures should be judged in the context of their belief system and as long as a person is not being tortured or killed ... then what difference does it make to us?"
You don't see systematic rape, violence and forced servitude as torture? Then I just don't know what is torture!
"Selling daughters (or sons) was spoken of in the Old Testament as slavery was a very respectable social system ... Why is it so bad if the result is a safe home for the girl?"
You're saying, it was in the OT so it's fine. JUST LIKE SLAVERY!! What??!! I want you to think of slavery in a more personal way. Imagine you don't have any family, and you suddenly lose your job. You go to the government and ask for some help to live and they immediately arrest you, keep you in chains and then sell you into unpaid labour until the day you die. This is YOU, not a black person in another country who wears funny clothes; YOU. And there's nothing you can do to stop it. How would you feel? Safe? These girls only have their parents to rely on, and their parents are selling them into slavery before they even start their periods. How can you say that that is safe??
I am not arguing for the practice, but why must we feel a need to impose our will onto others when physical harm is not being done?
I think I've covered this now. Rape, violence, lack of education, lack of ANY job opportunity and many other abuses are happening in these "marriages". That IS physical harm.
>90% of the population is Muslim. That 'splains it, Lucy.
are u stupid or what.
I R right, idiotic Muslim.
Zidri
Are you a child rapist or what?
I'm thinking that because of their age, they are not necessarily the "first" wives of said husbands. Not to even have had a period, yet, and being married? That's just wrong.
I'm also wondering if AIDS is a problem here. Many young men are taking young wives, as they think they will not get it since their new wives are virgins.
No matter the reason...it's a shame that so many beautiful young girls live this way. Babies having babies.
you get tyour period before 15
When you get your period can also depend on the qaulity, and quantity, of your diet, over years.
dna-
They're not taking young wives because they think it will cure them of AIDS, it's because of poverty. The same thing happens in India with child brides.
When a child is malnourished menarche can be delayed. This was the response to a question posed to a SA physician when I asked why an 18 year had not had her first period.
That's where Obama is trying to take the U.S.
And look how many people are just dying to get there....vote for Romney
I wondered why birth control and having unwanted children wasn't more visible on the Demo platform. Oh yes I remember it's the Republicans that want to eliminate family planning, sorry about the mistake. Seriously these are beautiful people and should be given a better education to help themselves deal with their situation.
KA, birth control etc. can be worked out in the House but once you're dead from Barry's Muslim violence, you won't be worrying about family planning.
These beautiful people are only allowed education in Islam, which means submission. The girls are told to protest or refuse is un-Islamic and are killed by their FAMILIES. Their loving FAMILIES. That's the nightmare you should be focused on for now, you selfish @!$%#.
trouble and Mila - you are both damned fools! It always takes the biggest geniuses in any forum to be the first to politicize and hence polarize a discussion. We all know that everything is Pres Obama's fault, that's a given among your kind. And, in those very rare moments where he is not to blame, it's all Romney's fault, right??!!
You use a country that has vast natural resources controlled by the elite and the worlds poorest and underfed masses to bash Obama. Your logic is flawed. Elect Romney and see the same here.
Truly a stupid statement!
Girls married young in this country not that long ago. At least her husband is in his mid twenties and not some old man.
Stupid comment. This is 2012. We can't change the past but we can the present.
You can't judge people in a 3rd world country by our standards.
Hope we don't go charging over there to try and change them because they are uncivilized! Like we try to do everywhere else. It's not of our business.
West Virginia still does it. I don't even think being in the same family has anyrhing to do with it either.
Charging their cell phones? hmmm....priorities I guess.
The men were charging their cell phones? wow, priorities.
They don't have land lines, it's their only form of communication. And they use their phone bills kind of like credit cards - they can do business and pay people on their phones. Often times one phone will serve multiple families - sometimes only the town's leader/mayor has a phone and everyone goes to him for transactions. So yeah, charging their phones is a pretty important part of life
Our President is not taking America to this level. This is utter stupidity of men who want money so they have daughters so they can sell them off to any thing that comes along. Women in those countries need to rise up and start a war with the men. Selling little girls to idiots, how mean and cruel can the world get. Hang the fathers who do this, castrate their butts, send them to a remote island with other men who would do this. Has nothing to do with being Muslim, it is a money, hunger problem. God help and be with the little girls, their days of childhood gone forever. I cry when I think of it. Trading your children like cattle.
That's a little simplistic isn't it? It is tragic on many levels, but the father who has 23 mouths to feed should let half of them starve because of the drought and nothing else he can do about it? It is so judgemental of you to talk about birth control when you don't have to work the land with hand-held implements, not machinery. It is judgemental of you to talk about perversion (and yes it angers me too, but as someone else mentioned-at least several of the men don't seem to be old), when obviously they would rather not have to marry their daughters off, but have to because of weather conditions. Until you have lived their reality, maybe your perch is just a little too comfortable?
They don't know any other way. It is their culture. True it sickens me to think that this is going on. Lets just hope we don't choose another broke-ass country to try and control and to make modern. We can't afford more handouts to people that can't pay it back.
And the breeding goes on and on because of stupidity. Why doesn't their government step in and help feed them and help them to get jobs? Oh I know, they are following America because we shipped out jobs overseas and we have a high rate of poverty too.
Lol you really think our poverty rate compares? You really think the government of a mostly barter economy has the funds to intervene?
Thank you moomoo2...most people don't get the economic differences. Or the political ones, not just at national level, but even at their local levels.
Hunger isn't NEW, so don't go There!
These people don't get the aid that other countries send, it goes into the pocket of the government and local authorities...
It's too late to play the hunger card... or the race card... Try putting the problem back in the hands of those who are TRULY at fault... ISLAM, the Government, ISLAM, the LAZY MEN, ISLAM, and the people who keep supporting and FEEDING the problem.
You Know.... I could post a slew of pictures of POOR and Sad Looking AMERICANS too.
But they probably wouldn't be starving... hungry maybe, but not starving.
compared to third world countries, if you've lived there or travelled in them, most Americans have no idea what poor really is.
some of us complain we're poor while we sit there watching our LCD HD TVs, doodling on our laptops and smart phones, with access to the best healthcare system in the world if we get sick or injured, with bathrooms and clean water, vaccinations for childhood illnesses, fire departments to put out fires, law enforcement to protect us from the bad guys, air conditioning, and all sorts of public assistance for those who don't want to or can't work.....yeah, we are so poor. that's why every third world citizen dreams of coming to the US! we have no idea how lucky we are.
That was the one thing that stuck out to me, how sad all of the young brides looked. Most wouldn't even look into the camera.
Beautiful girls, being treated like merchandise, married too soon, to men they don't love, and sometimes don't even know. The parents couldn't even let Sarey marry the boy she chose, despite the fact that he also wanted to marry her. My heart goes out to these girls. God bless them, and give them strength and happiness. I hope their daughters will have more freedom, and be able to decide when and if they want to get married.
This has little to do with religion, it is the way it was everywhere in the world 500 years ago. Subsistence farmers are dependent on good weather, when it doesn't happen, they suffer. Life expectancy in Niger is in the low fifties, most people grow and raise almost all their own food. It is so outside what most modern Americans have experienced, yet we are very quick to judge. The parents who marry off their daughters are also looking to feed their daughters.
That's bull@!$%#, your apologising for theocratic approved child molestation, it' vulgar and sick.
This article is from Egypt and there is NO FAMINE tere!!!!
http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2012/04/23/why_do_they_hate_us
From page four
Ok, another article about child marriage in africa, where someone attempting to stop it has caused attacks by angry mobs. Only this country is 95% Christian, and less than 2% Muslim.
Again, what is going on in Niger has little to do with religion. It is the way most of humanity lived until recently. I was making my own family tree, and found my own great grandmother was married at 13 to a guy in his 20s because her father had passed away and her mother couldn't feed her. This wasn't a muslim country. It was rural, christian US territory.
Niger is not Egypt. It is a different issue entirely.
Why can't we take the two billion dollars a year we give Egypt and build a aquaduct from the chad river or the niger river to help these people learn to feed them selves. If we can build one here in our country that runs from Colorado to California why not.
Then there would be no need to sell their children into slavery. And that's what this is. Sexual slavery at the whim of men. The women in this region have no say in anything. They have less value than an oxen.
Perhaps if there was a mandatory vasectomy for every male after two children, that would take care of the hunger problem too.
And someone needs to take a stick to the men under a tree charging their damn cellphones when they can't even feed their families!
Helping them increase their food supply is a noble cause. The one problem with just giving people more food and not educating them is the population will just go up to balance the amount of food produced. Nothing will be gained other then more under fed people. It is necessary to educate people to understand quality of life, not just how to provide resources for quantity of life. It has been shown the more education people have, the lower the population increase and the better quality of life a group has.
KABlack, then how do you explain the Duggars and their umpteen children? A good ol'fashioned Western education didn't teach that crew a thing about quality vs. quantity of life. Seems that right-wing Christians and dirt-dumb Muslims have a lot more in common than they might like to admit.
@Linda-4245242: You can't fix stupid.
they can support them-selves. Not these 3rd world people. Plus the Druggers are probably catolick (lol), therefore they must not believe in birth control. They could be mormons too. Don't believe they ever mentioned it on their reality show, which I'm sure they make bank to be on. So for you to compare the two is very weak.
Maybe if the west would stop trying to interfere with natural selection, this kind of suffering would die off, instead of going on for generations.
Hm, well said.
Right because natural selection doesn't take thousands - nay millions - of years. And social darwinism is proven fact...
What type of sick, perverted men desire to marry children 15 years old and younger. Disgusting. This is a practice very few people in the U.S. may comprehend, and I'm not one of them. I can't understand their dismal position in life and/or their hardships, but selling their daughters at 13 years old to the highest bidder seems so sadistic it's ridiculous.
Unfortunately, some of the young men's families are also pressuring them into the marriage. And for some it may not be the first marriage. And for some it is a matter of family alliances and friendship ties, and obligations as well.
uncles in west virginia
Who could afford to feed twenty three children and three wives anywhere in the world? Send them birth control
or mandate vasectomy.
This idea of multiple wives is not a good idea either. It encourages
the selling of young girls - if you don't get yours early before the old man next door adds his
third or fourth you're out of luck. As we can see around the world dominated by this culture, a lot
of young men with no hope of marriage can play havoc and produce violence.
You spend your money and send them birth control. The USA has no business interfering with anymore of these muslims (mostly) Countries. They can burn in hell, according to the Christians. They will be fine, God will save their souls even of they don't believe in him, right? WTF KMA
Got no money to eat but have cell phones? Go figure.
Why are those young men congregated under the shade, charging their cell phones, instead of out working or looking for work?
The cell phones help them work! For example, farmers use cell phones to check on the price of seeds, instead of making hours long trips to the market they can barely afford. And the cell phones are dirt cheap and rudimentary. As I said in my earlier comment:
" They don't have cell phone "bills". They put money credit towards the phones and use it until it runs out. It's a pay as you go system. And the phones you can get for dirt cheap since they're made in China. They're not walking around with iPhones paying $150 a month. (We could have this system here if the phone companies did not rely on unnecessarily locking us in to their specific service with our phones.) The use of cell phones actually save them money since they can connect cheaply with other people instead of driving or paying for a regular phone service."
People, take some time to educate yourself about conditions in other countries, instead of making assumptions. Seriously, it's 2012, you have Google now. It's not that hard.
23 kids in one family!!!!!!!!!! Maybe if these people would not be breeding like dogs they wouldn't be living in squaler and could afford to feed thier kids. Personally I have no sympathy for stupidity. And we want to feel sorry for them? Lets take care of our own who are poor before we plaster this stuff all over the internet so orginizations can get donations from bleeding hearts.
I was going to post something very similiar. You live in a desert and have a major food shortage and one man has 23 kids... I think the problem is pretty clear although a solution is still far away. The have nothing else to do but work on making more children.
Thats a gross thought, so busy worrying about getting a piece of a$$ instead of looking for sources of food. How could you be horney if your stomach is growling all the time. Thats like getting a quickee before a funeral- just sick, typical man. Thats all they think about. The ones here aren't much different.
Here is what everyone on this thread is missing: culture!! This is their culture, as sick and perverted as it is, most of these people have no clue what goes on in other well developed nations. These people live in the dark ages of civilization. Their government does nothing to help promote growth and prosperity for their people. Look at the way they still live. No running water, no indoor plumbing, tarps instead of mattresses to sleep on and so forth. Their food is only what can be found scarcely across the lands. It is time to bring these under developed countries into modern reality. Even countries like India and Pakistan still lay behind the times of modernization. The USA cannot afford to bring everyone out of poverty when we cannot even solve our own 100%. The job creation problem is right at the government's fingure tips but it goes unhears because we deal with corporatations' and politicians' greed. Corporations lobby the government and they get what they want while the rest of us suffer. This is not the fault of one party, it lies in the hands of all parties. Corporations do not create jobs. The government can encourage job growth and put restrictions on those who try to block it. WE THE PEOPLE need to stand up to our government. These government hand-outs, tax credits and other incentives do nothing to promote job creation. We have bridges, roads and tunnels that need repair and building all across the country in every state. So why has Congress sat on their ass about this? When the government hands out these contracts to private business owners, they hire people who then start spending money in their communities buying food, homes, education, vacations and so much more! That is the trickle-down effect we should be seeing. Corporations have been making record profits before, during and after the recession...still we have no jobs.
They don't live in the "dark ages" of civilization. They live in a different civilization.
I am not opposed to “Helping those who are willing to help themselves.”
One would think that with be billions in aid being sent to countries like this one that some headway would have been made so they could take care of themselves.
The sad truth is most are no better off than they were before they started getting aid.
So why does America continue to send aid to these countries where it is siphoned off by corrupt governments.
well, we can all take comfort in the fact that the men have cell phones now
....probably used to sell cattle and girls amongst themselves
sounds like they need to sterilize the women, then they wont have all the kids to feed
Women are slaves in Islam.
What they need to do is neuter the men. No more child marriages and children. No more violence.
Not necessarily. Some men use Islam to enslave women but honestly that is not what Islam is about at all. Most of these people in Niger have not eduation, not even a Qu'ranic education. They are just doing what they have done for centuries and out of necessity.
Because we have laws of consent here in the US does not mean they are obeyed. There is is horrible incest and child sex abuse going on in this country for all sorts of reasons. Go on Megan's law and see the list of perverts in your own neighbourhood.
It's easier and more cost effective to sterilize the men.
The men are the ones to blame. Cut their junk off, not the women. They are the sick perverted ba$tards. Not the women. I thought these people were muslims not cathlicks (lol).
I just want to say a prayer for the poor young girls. Things that are going on in these countries are illegal here. I prayer for the lives of all the girls in those countries that are going through these horrible trades for money. God you are the Father of us all if it is in your will please rap your arms around these girl and save them from harm. God as you did for me block their minds of all the things that are going on in their lives that they may not understand and release it at your will. The goverment God please jerk the power from them that they may not allow such thing to go on. God our heavenly Father I leave it in your hands knowing that you are a loving God of all people. I know for everything you allow to happen there is a reason, and in this may your will be done. AMEN
Not in West Virginia. You can even marry your uncle. Now these are sick pervert weirdos
FYI: Legal age of consent in the VATICAN is 13yrs! Would you consider this perverted?
Age of consent in Niger is 15 yrs for a civil wedding. These are traditional weddings done partly out of necessity and partly due to lack of education because for centuries girls have been getting married around the age of puberty.
fulam, he who uses anything that the Vatican states is lawful or ethical is he who is ignorant beyond all known standards of ignorance! I cannot think of any single entity on Earth that should never be invoked in moral discussions as that of our good friends in the Holy See. I mean, Holy S- - -!!
I'm aghast at the bold portrayal of bold ignorance by most of the commentators. Poverty, child-marriage, and other things have nothing to do with Islam, Christianity, Judaism or any other religion. It has been clarified by many social workers all over the world. Go and ask any minors working in any country of the world--they will tell you. Even Hitler was clear about it--he has explained it well in his Mein Kamph. US and other governments' aid to different countries is precisely meant for shutting up the mouths of the educated people to bribe them--otherwise they might speak up things as they are and envisage any revolution--and Western government like only slaves; they abhor any reference to any revolution that might change the things. Ironically, US governments, CIA, etc., have slain (or character-assassinated) uncountable would-be George Washingtons, Abraham Lincolns, and other heroes and heroines of US revolution, in other countries. And that is the root cause every damn thing in the world. The world now is manifest hell and it will grow worse.
Z'sheen, you really need to learn how to edit your "dark and stormy night" purple prose. Your submission makes no sense. Get to the point, if you have one to make.
Oh yeah if Hitler said it was okay then theres no argument there. Please
