Even during the best of times, one out of every three girls in Niger marries before her 15th birthday, a rate of child marriage among the highest in the world, according to a UNICEF survey. Now this custom is being layered on top of a crisis. At times of severe drought, parents pushed to the wall by poverty and hunger are marrying their daughters at even younger ages. A girl married off is one less mouth to feed, and the dowry money she brings in goes to feed others.
This drought-prone country of 16 million is so short on food that it is ranked dead last by international aid organization Save the Children in the percentage of children receiving a "minimum acceptable diet."

I agree with Mike. We here in the West tend to judge others in terms of our cultural values when they literally do not apply.
The same mistake is made when Westerners try to place our ideas onto Muslims. Their belief system is 180 degrees out from ours.
In other regions of the world the cultures should be judged in the context of their belief system and as long as a person is not being tortured or killed as in Islam, then what difference does it make to us?
Their are many cultures and customs that seem strange to us. With all of the cultural conflicts going on around the world, I recently began to study Eunucks. Wow, that is a big WOW, in how my perception of the subject was wrong. It is curently practiced today and has been going on since the beginning of civilizations. They wre not just slaves in the practical text, but were raised to high levels of government. It is interesting stuff. Google it.
The practice of teenaged brides is not at all uncommon. Especially in terms of political marriage arrangements of the past where very young children were married to grown men. As perverted as it sounds, the practice to them was sound and accepted. Selling daughters (or sons) was spoken of in the Old Testament as slavery was a very respectable social system. This practice was also recognized in Europe as late as the 19th century. And as we see here, is still paracticed today. Why is it so bad if the result is a safe home for the girl?
I am not arguing for the practice, but why must we feel a need to impose our will onto others when physical harm is not being done? The hypocracy of this argument, to me, comes into play when we, Barry, is trying to go to bed with the Muslims who gladly murder their women and children in the name of God every day?

But I have no problem transcending the "western world view" to state that this religion is one of bondage, not freedom or peace. They bring God to their level, to man's perspective. The don't have cell phone "bills". They put money credit towards the phones and use it until it runs out. It's a pay as you go system. And the phones you can get for dirt cheap since they're made in China. They're not walking around with iPhones paying $150 a month. (We could have this system here if the phone companies did not rely on unnecessarily locking us in to their specific service with our phones.) The use of cell phones actually save them money since they can connect cheaply with other people instead of driving or paying for a regular phone service.

compared to third world countries, if you've lived there or travelled in them, most Americans have no idea what poor really is.
some of us complain we're poor while we sit there watching our LCD HD TVs, doodling on our laptops and smart phones, with access to the best healthcare system in the world if we get sick or injured, with bathrooms and clean water, vaccinations for childhood illnesses, fire departments to put out fires, law enforcement to protect us from the bad guys, air conditioning, and all sorts of public assistance for those who don't want to or can't work.....yeah, we are so poor. that's why every third world citizen dreams of coming to the US! we have no idea how lucky we are.
That was the one thing that stuck out to me, how sad all of the young brides looked. Most wouldn't even look into the camera.
Beautiful girls, being treated like merchandise, married too soon, to men they don't love, and sometimes don't even know. The parents couldn't even let Sarey marry the boy she chose, despite the fact that he also wanted to marry her. My heart goes out to these girls. God bless them, and give them strength and happiness. I hope their daughters will have more freedom, and be able to decide when and if they want to get married.
This has little to do with religion, it is the way it was everywhere in the world 500 years ago. Subsistence farmers are dependent on good weather, when it doesn't happen, they suffer. Life expectancy in Niger is in the low fifties, most people grow and raise almost all their own food. It is so outside what most modern Americans have experienced, yet we are very quick to judge. The parents who marry off their daughters are also looking to feed their daughters.

Ok, another article about child marriage in africa, where someone attempting to stop it has caused attacks by angry mobs. Only this country is 95% Christian, and less than 2% Muslim.
Again, what is going on in Niger has little to do with religion. It is the way most of humanity lived until recently. I was making my own family tree, and found my own great grandmother was married at 13 to a guy in his 20s because her father had passed away and her mother couldn't feed her. This wasn't a muslim country. It was rural, christian US territory.
Niger is not Egypt. It is a different issue entirely.
Why can't we take the two billion dollars a year we give Egypt and build a aquaduct from the chad river or the niger river to help these people learn to feed them selves. If we can build one here in our country that runs from Colorado to California why not.

Helping them increase their food supply is a noble cause. The one problem with just giving people more food and not educating them is the population will just go up to balance the amount of food produced. Nothing will be gained other then more under fed people. It is necessary to educate people to understand quality of life, not just how to provide resources for quantity of life. It has been shown the more education people have, the lower the population increase and the better quality of life a group has.

What type of sick, perverted men desire to marry children 15 years old and younger. Disgusting. This is a practice very few people in the U.S. may comprehend, and I'm not one of them. I can't understand their dismal position in life and/or their hardships, but selling their daughters at 13 years old to the highest bidder seems so sadistic it's ridiculous.
Unfortunately, some of the young men's families are also pressuring them into the marriage. And for some it may not be the first marriage. And for some it is a matter of family alliances and friendship ties, and obligations as well.

I was going to post something very similiar. You live in a desert and have a major food shortage and one man has 23 kids... I think the problem is pretty clear although a solution is still far away. The have nothing else to do but work on making more children.

Here is what everyone on this thread is missing: culture!! This is their culture, as sick and perverted as it is, most of these people have no clue what goes on in other well developed nations. These people live in the dark ages of civilization. Their government does nothing to help promote growth and prosperity for their people. Look at the way they still live. No running water, no indoor plumbing, tarps instead of mattresses to sleep on and so forth. Their food is only what can be found scarcely across the lands. It is time to bring these under developed countries into modern reality. Even countries like India and Pakistan still lay behind the times of modernization. The USA cannot afford to bring everyone out of poverty when we cannot even solve our own 100%. The job creation problem is right at the government's fingure tips but it goes unhears because we deal with corporatations' and politicians' greed. Corporations lobby the government and they get what they want while the rest of us suffer. This is not the fault of one party, it lies in the hands of all parties. Corporations do not create jobs. The government can encourage job growth and put restrictions on those who try to block it. WE THE PEOPLE need to stand up to our government. These government hand-outs, tax credits and other incentives do nothing to promote job creation. We have bridges, roads and tunnels that need repair and building all across the country in every state. So why has Congress sat on their ass about this? When the government hands out these contracts to private business owners, they hire people who then start spending money in their communities buying food, homes, education, vacations and so much more! That is the trickle-down effect we should be seeing. Corporations have been making record profits before, during and after the recession...still we have no jobs.

Age of consent in Niger is 15 yrs for a civil wedding. These are traditional weddings done partly out of necessity and partly due to lack of education because for centuries girls have been getting married around the age of puberty.

It has been clarified by many social workers all over the world. Go and ask any minors working in any country of the world--they will tell you.
