School bus crashes into house after driver's 'medical emergency'

Update, Oct. 5, 2012: A school bus driver, who authorities said passed out behind the wheel and crashed into a house on Long Island, N.Y. while children were aboard, has been arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, according to police.

Original story: A school bus leaving a Catholic elementary school crashed into a house on Long Island Wednesday afternoon, NBCNewYork.com reports.

Syosset Fire Chief Peter Silver said the driver "had a medical emergency of some kind." Newsday reported that he was airlifted to a hospital in East Meadow, where he was admitted in a serious but stable condition.

The five children on the bus ranged in age from 5 to 8, but none was injured, police said. Read the full story at NBCNewYork.com.

The way that bus looks, it appears he got that bus going fast and jumped it off a ramp, a la World's Dumbest Drivers. Amazing that non of the kids were hurt. Maybe let one of them drive next time, or have all of them driving the bus as a group to learn about team work. They couldn't do much worse.

If you're referring to "none was injured" that IS the correct way to say it. It's like saying "No one was injured". Don't recall the grammar rule for that at the moment...

      #1.4 - Thu Oct 4, 2012 1:20 PM EDT

No. If you want to use the word "none," then it would have to read "None were injured." But if you are wanting to use the words "no one," then it would have to read "No one was injured."

I don't know why so many people think "no one" is one word, but it never has been nor will it ever be.

Didnt this bus driver go through a physical before starting the new school year ?

        Reply#2 - Thu Oct 4, 2012 10:35 AM EDT

A heart attack or stroke can happen to anyone at any time, regardless of how physically fit you are, if that indeed is the cause of this accident.

Sometimes there are very little warning signs. He could of had a seizure, and people would have never known that he would have them unless he went to a specialist.

if it was a " medical emergency of some kind," then why has it not been "Determined" yet; and how does anyone know it was a "medical emergency of some kind?" sounds kinda , well--- fishy to me.

cowtowntrucker, I guess you aren't familiar with HIPPA. By law they can not release to medical emergency to the public with out consent of the patient.

Yet strangely enough, officials feel seat belts aren't neccessary for the safety of our children on school busses.

In this case, unfortunately so. But unexplained medical emergencies do occur. I passed out once while driving and hit a utility pole. I have no known medical conditions, and was not under the influence of any substance. Thankfully, no one else was inured.

Driver needs to be tested for drugs or alcohol. If one or the other is involved in this accident he should be charged one count each of Reckleesly endangering the welfare of a child plus whatever other charges the district attorney can come up with.

As long as the medical emergency wasnt alcohol poisoning or an overdose, its just good everyone was ok. If he was messed up on something, he'll be away for a long time. We tend not to mess around when it comes to kids.

I have a really hard time believing that no kids were injured. The bus went into the air...the kids had to have been thrown forward into the seats in front of them. Faces and heads have to have been hit, necks and backs are probably gonna be really sore tomorrow. I think what they should be saying, is that no visible injuries seemed to have been present.

According to Newsday: "Frederick Flowers, 66, of 478 Eastlake Ave. in Massapequa Park, faces five counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra's Law, which makes it illegal to drive drunk with children under age 16 in the vehicle." Isn't it illegal to drive drunk even if you are alone in the vehicle???

Ya know, I was gonna feel sorry for this guy if it was a legitimate medical emergency like a stroke or heart attack or something.

Now that I know it was a DWI... he should be sent to jail for a long time. And have his liver ripped out without anesthesia. That way, if he drinks again, he'll die. And good riddance. Serves him right for putting those kids in danger.

It was not a medical emergency at all, he was in fact drunk. This story was posted after Newsday had updated the original story. He is being charged for 5 counts under Leandra's Law as well as other DWI related charges. This house is across the street from the school and luckily for everyone involved he only made it that far because it could have been much worse.
