The Associated Press reports from Vassar, Mich. — Army Staff Sgt. Travis Mills had been a lot of places since losing his four limbs in Afghanistan. The one place he hadn't been was where people knew him best.
He finally returned to his Michigan hometown this week — six months after the explosion that cost him his arms and legs — to serve as the grand marshal of his old high school's homecoming parade.
"This is my new normal, and it's all about how I adjust to it," he said moments after using his prosthetic legs to walk from the living room to the sun room at his childhood home. "There's no good that's gonna come from me sitting there and wondering, 'Why'd this happen? Why me? Now what do I do?' The answer's right in front of you: It happened because it happened." I understand the outpouring of love and praise for this man, but what else was he going to do. He is just surviving. He is just doing what he has to to keep living. That bomb blast could have just as easily killed him, or even disfigured him. A hero is not determined by whether or not a person lives or dies. A child born with birth defects has the same problems and the same struggles but IS NOT considered to be a hero, rather they are just nothing? I tend to believe the opposite. Wars do not have to happen, especially these last two.
As his children grow they will be told that their father is what he is because of WAR, and that we should praise him because he was defending our freedom and liberty? I am a Vietnam veteran and I didn't believe then! The last war in which we truly defended our freedom and liberty (not somebody else's)n was WWII. The 9/11 attacks was an attack on our security. Freedom has never guaranteed security and security has never guaranteed freedom! The protection of the welfare of people and freedom by war has always been the alibi and excuse of foolish leaders and dictators!
This soldier was ordered into combat. If he felt that being there was defending his country, I will not debate his thinking. The day will come when reality bites and like for us Vietnam vets it will bite hard! As for being a hero I don't know. In my mind a hero is not trained, paid, or supported to do dangerous things. Nowadays the term is so overused and diluted it seems to apply to anyone who wears a uniform. I never considered anyone when I was in the Marine Corps to be a hero. In Vietnam our world was small and survival was paramount. We thought nothing about what people thought of us at home unless we had time to. Sending these young people off as "Heroes", I feel we put an extra burden on them. One they have to try to live up to. One that makes many feel invincible and therefore more likely to make mistakes. Survival no longer becomes an issue for the present, but rather a goal for when they leave!
All people in combat are basically scared people who would rather be someplace else. Nobody comes back unwounded. There may not be physical scars but there are mental ones. These people in this soldier's hometown have no clue what this man has to deal with at night or when is is alone in his mind. All their praise is not going to give him back what he lost. Reality after trauma is a slow but relentless process. With God's help I hope he has the courage to keep surviving.
Thank you Sir for your words, and for your service.
BTW - If no one told you before, welcome home!
There is NOTHING in Afghanistan that is worth the mutilation and deaths of our Brave Soldiers. Nothing. Obama has changed the direction and policies of the War in Afghanistan. He has turned a WIN into a Grave Loss.
All our Brave Soldiers are in Afghanistan are TARGETS for the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Let the Afghans step on their own IED's and let the Afghans die for their own Country.
Don't let another American loose their limbs or life in this Obama tragedy.
Please take your political rants, and stick them...
jimmyfox:: Who do you think started the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? What do you mean by "this Obama tragedy"? He didn't start them!
Get a clue! The ground War was started by GW Bush. Obama escalated it at the advice of the generals and has set an end date to the Afghan conflict. The Iraq and Afghanistan ground wars were never necessary and were at the direct orders of king George. Please do not re-write history for the GOP agenda.
I wanted to thank Travis and all his fellow service men for all the freedom we have that they fight to protect. We mostly all take for granted what we have and should greatly appreciate all the service these men and women provide for us and our great country. Again thank you for all that you give for us and I hope happiness always finds a place in your heart
What a waste. Read what Marine General Smedley Butler thought about his service to American corporations in the 30's and how the corporations asked him to lead a coup against the US. The era of having to fight wars for your independence was over for the US when it developed the atomic bomb. Wars since then are ONLY about defending corporate interests. I am a retired veteran but anybody who joins the US military is a sap, defender of billionaire corporatists and an imperialist.
If this isn't living proof of it being time to bring our troops home, then I don't know what is. God bless this young man, his family, and all others who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
What an excellent example of a brave man. Sometimes life changing things happen to change our way of thinking in life, bring us back to reality so to speak. And its how we deal with them that counts. Why did he lose all of his limbs, why did I get stage 4 cancer a few yrs back, why do some children go hungry in africa while our children throw away half eaten cheeseburgers from Mcdonalds? Its just life and we are delt what we are delt, noone to blame, no way around it, we just deal the best we can and are thankful to have the chance to keep on living. Keep your chin up even on the rough days. Thank you Travis for your service and for risking your life to keep us all safe everyday, your amazing!
Welcome Home & Thank You for Your Service Travis!
As a fomer soldier, I can tell you Travis is and will always be a HERO, not because he survived his wounds, but because he did his duty for the rest of us. He has and will continue to receive therapy for his wounds, both mental and physical. Those of you who feel the need to be critical or hurtful, our military and their families sacrafice for you as well. God Bless you and your family Travis and all of our brave military reresenitives. Kep on Keppin On!
As a vet stories like this leave me so ambivalent. While he served his country and became so disabled we celebrate him as a hero as we should but we should never forget the insanity that allowed him to be placed in harms way to suffer like this. Let your government know that to get involved in other countries issues with no declared war and no clear mission has got to be stopped forever. If everyone let their congressional representatives know how we feel maybe something would change or do they not represent us anymore?
Army Staff Sgt. Travis Mills, you are an inspiration to never giving up and always moving forward. I wish all the best to you and your family and I thank you for your service and the sacrifices you have made for your country and all of your fellow Americans past, present and future!
God bless him. What did obama do, other then catch and kill the worst terroist of all times. Tell the the truth. U people do not want a black man. Where was all ur personal comment about these issues when Bush was screwing us in the ground. Not one word about Bush .
You must be black sharlene? Only black people keep pulling the race card where it has no business on this page. It would be like me coming on this page and saying dont vote obama unless you want all of the black people to have more foodstamps, free cell phones, govt asst daycare and housing, and have 10 more kids so they can get more foodstamps! Is that what you wanted to hear? All people hate "the black people". When the reality of it is Sharlene that everyone nowadays seems to be needing a little help. We dont hate germans because they once upon a time killed jewish people, so exactly why do you knock down white people for once upon a time killing your enslaved forefathers? I believe the race card has expired and its time to move on. Find something new to blame your personal down falls on would you, because everyones tired of hearing the same old crap.
sharlene take your racist hatred somewhere else animal. Another who bites the hand that feed them. You make me sick.
U still have not told us why we did not hear these comments when Bush was in office. It not about Obama, isn't about how people didn't dare speak this why about Bush. My hate ? What all the people on this page hating Obama. All I am saying give him the same respect u gave other presidents. U comments are useless talking about me. I do not care. Give him respect. O by the way I hope u have enough saved for long term care if ur health should ever fail.
Sharlene 3583683 You should have ended with the statement "God bless him."
I dont dislike Obama, I dont like him either, I dont dislike Bush, dont care for him either..same goes for Romney. They all lie and its usually all about the money. In fact every single president tells us what they will do for this country, and every president lets us down. Its a shame really. It wasnt about him being black, its about him being like all of the rest. You said "Tell the truth, u people do not want a black man." Whos "U" people? Whos racist Sharlene? Its funny how usually the person who cheats in a relationship is the one who cries out that the other one is cheating. hmm should give you something to think about there.
U people are the people that say hateful things no matter what he does. Black people did not elect him along. There are people that will not except him or any person fo color, no matter what they do good or bad.
This story has so much beauty that most people cannot even see. People want to look at the politics instead of this soldier who gave his four limbs. When you sit there and wish for something better, think of this man. He lost all four limbs yet he is completely content. why? Because God allowed him to LIVE, to tell us a story, a lesson, to appreciate what we have and let go of what we do not have. A story of how this man is content and the blessings he is bringing and going to bring to other people and this country. A lesson, to show that while he lost four limbs, he is glad that he is alive where so many people if this were to happen to them, would want something else. This brought tears to my eyes...don't get politics involved with this story people. Look and appreciate this soldier, show him and his family support.
This War Hero is amazing. What an exemplary man. I know what it like to 'almost' have to lose a limb and the thoughts are terrible. This soldier served our country knowing what may happen in battle and did it solely for American freedom. Truly inspiring!!
U are so right. People are not as passionate u. If more people were we would need to say this.
This is about a couragaous soldier who did a service to his country. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart. It is not about the president or the person who built his ramp. If it gets him into the place hes going, great. Lets quit putting the negative in such a positive story. May god bewith you and your family.
If we had gotten out of that wasteland in two years, as we should have, this young man would be whole. We need to get out of there since we keep getting more young men wounded and killed
Hi Travis, welcome home from an old Navy Nam vet, I thank you for your service and your sacrifice, bless you for your attitude, I believe it is what makes you a true hero and warrior, I was a Mi. resident and often get up that way, I hope our paths cross at some point so I can shake the hand of another vet who gets it. My concern for you is that all the people of this country see to it that you get what you need from the VA. They are short staffed and short funded, if people are really concerned about our vets they should put their wallets where their mouth is and stop letting politicians cut VA budgets and funding. God bless you and your family, love you ,man
You look great SSG Mills...you have a beautiful daughter and wife...may God's many blessings continue to come upon you and your family....I love your upbeat and strong attitude towards the life you live...thank you for your service as well as being an inspiration to this Army mom and the many other military families throughout our country and world!
Travis and family, because of YOU, I am free. I pray for you and your family every day and thank you for the sacrifice that you made for me and all of us who hold freedom dear. I just know you will overcome as you are here to remind us how horrible war is and why we must have peace. What a beautiful family you have and you are here for your daughter. God Bless you. I am moved to tears in gratitude to you.
I salute you SSG Mills. Welcome home and THANK YOU for your service. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten. The one percent who have been there and done that sincerely appreciate DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY.
This story makes me want to cry, but I will not feel sorry for this hero because if he were sitting here with me he would tell me, "Do not feel sorry for me!" Being a veteran myself, I have nothing but the utmost gratitude and respect for this young man and our military. I hope this man never has to work or provide for himself again. And if he receives from this government a free home, and a lifelong salary, and entitlements to take care of his family for the rest of his days....well that is small in comparison to what he has sacrificed for this country and all of us. It is the absolute least we can do for this man. This man deserves to be taken care of by us for the rest of his life. We could all learn from his dedication and selflessness that he has shown to this country. Like the war or not, this is a true hero. I myself do not support the war, and I happen to be staunchly conservative, but we are sending our sons and daughters to slaughter for countries that despise and hate us and will never adapt our ways of democracy. I do not feel like our soldiers have served for nothing as some have said, I also know that there are some in these countries that appreciate our help but I do feel it is time to bring our men and women home and no longer subject them to this brutality by a people who hate us and do not want our help. We just cannot solve all of the worlds problems and keep letting this happen to this nations young men and women. God Bless You Travis!!! You are an inspiration to us all and you make me proud to be an American. As to all you other posters, men like Travis can really use our help by donating to Wounded Warrior or similar organizations. If you hate the war, so be it, but do not take your frustrations out on the brave men and women who have served over there.
Welcome home Travis, there never be enough thanks for your losses for us.You are one brave soldier whom I truly respect and wish and pray for the best in happiness. Thank You
You served proudly and as an American, I thank you for protecting us to keep us safe and to show the world that when there is trouble the United States we respond...that is why the US is considered the top world power. World Bullies like Russia, Iraq, Syria, Libiya, etc. don't mess with the US thanks to soldier's like yourself.
God Bless -
Very touching... Can the USA ever be completely in peace?
