Mitt Romney's English roots surprise long-lost cousins

Mid morning sun shines on Dalton-in-Furness, northwestern England on September 26, 2012. Relatives of U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney were born and bred here in the 18th and 19th centuries.

A sign for Romney Road is seen on a street in Dalton-in-Furness. Not many people would associate Romney with Britain but it was in these rain-soaked plains of northern England that his ancestors lived for generations, converted to Mormonism and left for the U.S. in 1841 in search of the promised land.

Reuters reports from Barrow-in-Furness, England — Mitt Romney's fight to become America's next president has the backing of one enthusiastic group of supporters, although they don't actually have a vote: his relatives in England.

Few associate the Republican candidate with Britain but it was in England's industrial northwest that his ancestors lived for generations and converted to Mormonism before leaving for the United States in 1841 in search of the promised land.

Jennie Iveson, aged 69, poses with family photographs inside her terraced home in Barrow-in-Furness. Jennie is Mitt Romney's fourth cousin.

Records show that Jennie Iveson is Mitt Romney's fourth cousin - they share a great-great-great grandfather, George Romney, who died in 1859. And now she can't help but notice that her distant American relative does bear a striking family resemblance.

"I saw him on the telly twice the other day, last week I think. He looks a bit like my brother," said Iveson, a retired factory worker, most of whose children have no jobs.

Asked if she would like to meet Romney in the White House, Maria said "I think it would be very surreal. I would like to go there for a brew (cup of tea) if he ever got in there."

Too bad for us they didn't stay there. He'd be trying to destroy the U.K. now instead of the U.S.

You are the first person to even hint that Romney might be ashamed of distant relatives. Projection, I'd say.

Does it really matter where Mr Romney has relatives? America is the melting pot of the world. It was once a crucible for good. Now I don't recognize it as such. It has been usurped by the greedy who pray to Avarice and turned into the great whore dressed in scarlet robes.

I don't feel that the choices for this presidental cycle will matter much. It's not the president who runs things because he is limited by the house and senate in what he can do.

The Bamacrats want you to lean forward. The Republicans just want you to bend over.

With all of this leaning left and right, the row boat is going to flip and we'll all drown.

So, the real question is, HOW LONG CAN YOU TREAD WATER?

I will try a different tack this year and vote Libertarian straight down the line and see what happens.

@ George Hayduke Sr, well if the President's Father was a "Rolling Stone" in Kenya, how is that the President's fault? The President had his mother and grandmother, and the Sperm Donor played no part in his life. I have a half brother and he and I have no relationship, he is just another one of my Fathers kids. The fact of the matter is this, many men, black, white, etc., father children by different women, and not all the half-siblings have a relationship, period!!

Ain't this something? The media is already digging harder in CANDIDATE Mitt Romneys past / family heritage than they have do for Barack Obama's after 2 years of campaigning, and nearly 4 years of being our President.

It's no wonder Obama is such a mystery to most of us. The press never vetted Obama like they do all of the white male Republicans.

Michael, that is an astonishing bit of speculation even applied to Mittsy. Romney and Romany are not connected.

Let's stick to something plausible, such as considering whether Mittsy is even wholly human and not an outer space alien--which he intends and expects to become, anyway.

why not talk to the prez bro in kenya? they should talk to him if msnbc really wants to know the candidates siblings. this article is such a garbage. they will go in any length to find dirt and they always find nothing but stupidity. msnbc go to kenya and talk to the prez bro.

What does resemblance matter? The English people are usually good looking people. Romney is a nice looking person -- but we don't go by looks when we're voting for President of the USA.

What a wonderful warm fuzzy story, almost makes you forget what mitt really believes in, not the stuff he's spinning now since the 47%(his real belief) story came out. Anywho, ol mitt can go to his uk ancestral home, take some neo con supporters with him to meet and greet, and let their vitriol about 'socialists scum' and the other hatred they have toward any one who lives with free health care and retirement. ol mitt will give those socialist euro bums the good ol american what for about socialists.Other than that, the story was a waste of digital space. BTW, when can we expect a nice story about the romney families ties to mexico? Now, that would be interesting to see brought out.

Isn't it a Mormon policy to learn who their ancestors were? based on this, isn't it likely the Romney's knew who family was?

My family also came from Lancashire in the 19th century and the information is easily available. Records show this branch of the family date back to the 1500's and they were poor, much more than carpenters were

I mention this only to show even poor families were available.

      HIS MISTRESS GREEN*

“Now think, ye rich men all, I pray
Of Goody Blake and Harry Gill!”
—Wordsworth (mostly), from Goody Blake and Harry Gill

You see that man, that billionaire who
Insists he knows the low-class woes?
      That man, a more-than-millionaire who
Claims to know how hardship goes?
Do you believe that gold-fed man
—Who goes and poops a golden log,
Who claims that all are in his plan—
Is so empathic? Ask his dog.

This Mitt-head (as of now a Mormon),
      Who owns, I bet, a sub/car/plane:
I wonder when he greets his doorman
Does he feel that doorman’s pain?
Oh, yes! I bet he tips him great!:
He puts two tickets in his hand
And says, “My boy, here, bring a date
To see me speak. It will be grand!”

(Remember, he was asked about how
Best his boys had served their home,
And shameless, spineless did he tout how
      “They campaigned!… Hey… where’s my comb?”
But don’t you doubt he’d send your son,
Your daughter off to distant lands,
With too few bullets in their gun,
      To die in Middle-Eastern sands.)

I say a Mormon now because he
Might disown it like his plan
For social health-care. My God! does he
Own one thought? this sketchy man!
And though this flopper didn’t flip
      His message at the ACP,**
Don’t think that he had drunk a sip
Of Kool-Aid made with Limbaugh pee.

He has no master but the dollar,
      His one true love, his mistress green;
      This dominatrix has his collar:
This biggest sub you’ve ever seen!
So vote for him you mammoth red,***
But don’t complain to me if you
      Were led astray by what he said;
He might turn out the reddest blue!

If they do, don't forget -if they get a Pell grant or get any "government" help that I helped them get there. They didn't get the grades themselves, so remember to send me my share of yourchild's supposedly success that they earned.

Well it might be nice if the author of this one told the whole story; the Romneys were firmly established in the New World by the 1830's when his ancestors converted to the Mormon faith. Mitt's great-great grandfather Parley P. Pratt was a "beloved Apostle" in the early church, an intelligent and skilled orator, no doubt, but he escaped from a Missouri jail after being charged with murder in the shooting death of a state militia member. Pratt was later murdered himself by the estranged husband of a woman he'd taken as his own 12th wife. This followed on the heels of a botched kidnapping of her children who had been sequestered in New Orleans (Pratt was traveling under an alias).

As for the Romney family history in this country, author Judith Freeman offers this bit of mediation. She is the author of the novel Red Water, with uses the backdrop of the Mountain Meadows Massacre to weave its story of one of the participants' "plural wives." Many credible historians believe the massacre occurred in part as an act of vengeance in retaliation for Pratt's killing.

The point is an attempt, and a poor one at that, to tie Mitt to the prim and proper English and those who are better off that most Americans. That's whay I got out of the article with this haphazardly thrown in there "Iveson, a retired factory worker, most of whose children have no jobs." With a few weeks to go it is only going to get worse as they realize their fabricated polling statistics are vanishing before their eyes.

If you had as much money as Romney, would you invest all of it in this country -- since this country is in such bad shape? My grandmother (after losing a lot during the depression) did not trust the banks at all. She hid her dollars in the house she lived in. Her sons (my uncles) objected to this method, but she informed them she did not trust banks. Had she lived during this time, she probably would have invested her money in tax-free foreign bank accounts. Wake up, America -- and realize our monetary situation is serious, as is the job situation in this country. I'm not leaving because I love this country -- just wish we didn't have these problems.

Bwahaahaahahhahaha! Is this intended to disparage Romney for having lost contact with the British branch of his family tree, with his direct line having left their homeland almost 200 years ago - having been Americans almost as long as we've been America?? And now, turns out the UK branch are not all wealthy and successful - shocking!!! Let's show a little grace here - Mr. Romney, of course, does not know, has never known, nor had any contact with these distant folks who share his heritage in UK.

ALSO, I will jump on board with the president's protectors on this subject too (and I am not a politcal supporter, for oh-so-many reasons) - it is in no way the responsibility of Pres. Obama to support his impoverished brother or close relatives who can't support themselves! It is not the place of another to judge the bonds of another's family. If they're close and one has greater success and chooses to assist another, great; if not, fine. We do not know the private reasons for the president's disassociation with these people - I believe that he just never knew his brother and this group in FL to begin; just like Mr. Romney has never known the folks to whom he has some distant relation over in the UK. Let's show a little grace here (I tried reeaally hard myself, so hope none of this came off catty).

The distant family members you have in the US are definitely different than distant family members you have in the UK. I have a family member that is German over here, and I've never been to Germany. But, I do claim her and try to stay in contact. I do not know who else I may have as a relative in Germany or England. But I do know there are relatives of mine in these two countries -- very distant relatives -- just like Romney's in the UK.

By way of information, the Miles and Elizabeth identified in the baptismal record of this article converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon) and immigrated to the United States. They originally settled in Nauvoo, Illinois but later immigrated with the Mormon pioneers to Salt Lake City and then onto St. George, Utah. They became established there helping to build the St. George Tabernacle and Temple. Miles is known for his craftmanship in furniture building and is credited with building the spiral stair case in the St. George Tabernacle. It is indeed beautiful. His pioneer home, which still stands, was said to have had one of his spiral staircases in it connecting the upper and lower floors but was removed when the house was plumbed for a bathroom in the first half of the 20th century. Miles and Elizabeth remained faithful to the religion that brought them to America and are buried in the St. George cemetery. Mitt Romney's pioneer heritage is inspiring. He has a lot to live up to.

That line - "one of the wealthiest people ever to run for the Presidency" is a load of carp! The country was set-up so that the wealthy WERE the ones that run things. They were the land owners! They were the ones that had the most to lose! They also had the "obligation" to take care of the rest as it was their "station" to do so. Ever taken a look at the wealth of Washington, Jefferson, Lee, Carol, etc? Take their worth in money and land and convert that to today's numbers. Romney wouldn't even be able to get in the same room as most of them. The founding fathers owned the majority of the land and wealth in the colonies. They certainly owned a larger share than the guys in there do now. The difference is they EARNED it BEFORE they went in - not from taking kickbacks after they got the government job. They went into public "service" as a duty, not a way to line their pockets. Want to talk about money running for the presidency? Obama is not broke folks! And Kerry was one of the wealthiest people in the country - oh, that was his WIFE'S money wasn't it? Give me a break.

If you are not very rich before you start to run for the office, you are so bought and paid for by the time you get in, you cant get to your car keys because of all of the hands in your pockets. This country needs someone who will run this country like a business, cut the pork projects, and make the lazy get up off their butts and work for their phones!
