Catalans eye independence from Spain ahead of elections

Reuters -- Spain's wealthy but financially troubled region of Catalonia chooses a new government on Sunday in an election that could trigger a constitutional crisis over a resurgent Catalan breakaway movement.

Opinion polls show most Catalans will vote for pro-independence parties, either from the left or right, handing their leader a mandate to hold a referendum on succession, despite strong resistance from the Spanish government.

The secessionist threat is a major problem for Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy who is trying to show stability and fiscal responsibility in his fight to keep Spain in the euro currency zone and avoid an international bailout, despite a savage recession. Read the full story.

As Catalonia is comprised of four regions, and within those, one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe, there also already being recognized as a nationality, there are strong leanings towards independence currently in Catalonia.The President is going to have a tough battle on his hands to say the least.Since that wealthy region isn't inclined to be burdened with the financial crisis going on in the rest of Spain much longer. Barcelona is its capitol and second largest city after Madrid in Spain.

new york city would do the same to become part of Israel except it gets too much of our federal tax dollars!

Most people see Spain a one country with one people, but don't realize that is comprised of many autonomous regions, languages and cultures. This does not come as a surprise.
