Homeless couple calls Colombian sewer home

Albeiro Lopera, Reuters — Former drug addict Miguel Restrepo, 62, has been living in an abandoned sewer with his wife and dog Blackie for 22 years. Their home, fitted with a kitchen, fan, television, chair and bed, is a 64.5-square-feet tunnel that leaks when it rains and requires a manhole cover.

In a video on the BBC website, Restrepo says that he lives better than the president of Colombia.

Bless their hearts for that dog! I am happy that my living circumstances are better than this but one cannot be proud of where one was born. There is no drive-up window in the sky where one chooses one's parents while they are having, and possibly enjoying, unprotected sex. Anyone you know choose to be a Somalian?

If more people would be happy with what they have, rather than what they don't have, everyone would much happier. But we now see what our neighbor has and decide if I don't have it then nobody should have it.

Or better yet if my neighbor has it and I can't afford it the government should take it from them and give it to me.......

Nice pup! And what strong souls these two are. There is proof that it's the small things in life that make us happy, no matter your ethnic background. I know quite a few people myself who drive the latest Lexus and live in gorgeous neighborhoods in southern CA, but also happen to be extremely miserable and awash in anti depressants... such is life.

          Exactly what I was wondering.

I'm wondering where the assumption came that they live in a sewer because of where they where born and to what parents. It does state that he was a drug addict, that may have something to do with it.

In third world countries they often run appliances off rechargable batteries. I think car batteries even work. Or they steal power by running it from nearby lines (dangerous to say the least).

But if you break it all down and if they love eachother AND together choose this life? ... Well, good for them. I hope they live healthy happy lives and die in their sleep at a ripe old age.

It just goes to show you that it's not what you have or how what life hands you, it's what you make of it. These people have chosen to be happy with what they have, and we could all learn a thing or two from that.

OhJoy focused on it because he's thinking about the "liberated" women in the U.S. and how they wouldn't tolerate 'servering' their man with unconditional love. OhJoy probably can't even dream that some women might not have wanted to be "liberated" and that a life at home with children would have been just fine for many. But now in America most women are forced to work... as it is almost impossible now to raise a family on a single income thanks to their predecessors.

Always someone having to make a truly non-political story political. If you want to go there...I live in Michigan. And let me tell you, after surviving 8 years with a Canadian Democrat Governer who literally drove our state into the ground, Governor Snyder has been a breath of hope for all of us here. Did you see any pictures at all of the east side of the state the way Granholm left it? It was post-apocalypse type stuff. Now Michigan is growing again and you want to call for Snyder's head just because he passed one bill you dont like? Seems pretty selfish if you ask me.

jwill1 - how does Granholm get blame for the mass exodus of manufacturing to overseas and down south that has been occuring for the last 30-40 years?

I live in Michigan too - take your ignorant blinders off and wake up to reality.

Snyder isnt doing squat, other than padding his buddies pockets and promoting his best friends so they can make money off the govt, ala taking over Benton Harbor.

Snyder is 2 years in...how come detroit isnt fixed yet? I mean, you guys thought Obama was going to fix an entire nation in 4 years, surely Snyder could fix little ol michigan in 2.

so sick of stupid crap like this, and blind ugly partisanship that does nothing to talk about the actual issues, the real problems.

and im as liberal as they come and willing to acknowledge all that is wrong with unions - and there is plenty. but elmininating them isnt the solution to the problem - nor is turning every state in the nation into the poor south, via right to work for less legislation.

It's funny that Michigan lost so much manufacturing to the south, before the rest of the work went mexico and china...of course, you have to go back to the 50's to realize that happened first.

and so how come the right to work for less and not in a union south isnt doing so well? how come those red states down there are forever poor and mirred in poverty, despite not having unions?

because unions arent the problem...greed is, and greed is killing both the companies and the unions...and therefore, killing the entire united states...

so let me get this straight. Michigan has a one-state recession every year until the rest of the nation joins us in 2008...in fact, Michigan leads the jobless rate and misery polls EVERY SINGLE year Granholm is in office and you want to completely shift the blame off of her and say it was because our manufacturing jobs went south...and I'M the one that needs to take the blinders off? Do you realize how ridiculous you sound? Of course you don't, you are a liberal.

Michigan's private sector saw, on average, 10% of their pay drop during her reign, while government workers actually saw a 4% INCREASE in pay while our economy was in the crap hole, but I suppose you have an excuse for that too...And I'm sure the jobless rate which on average was 33 percent higher than the national average during her reign had nothing to do with the 1.8 billion dollar tax increase on the private sector...the same tax rate that Snyder cut which resulted in 90,000 new jobs in the first two months of Snyder taking over.. that of course is just a coincidence. Yes, I am a conservative, but if I EVER become so caught up in my beliefs that I can't even acknowledge when someone of a different opinion is somewhat right on something....God help me. Wow...

I live in the south. I can say this: There are just alot of dumb hillbillies here who are not educated and choose to live off welfare. Thats why there is poverty. Its not the unions doing anything. Anyone that wants a job has one. My husband works in a place that has unions. He opted not to be in the union. Its his right. He is not treated any differently and makes the same pay. The only difference is that the union will not back him if he gets fired. He is a good worker so he is not worried about it. 8 years on the job and no bad consequences from it. He cannot vote, but so what. He doesn't have to pay either.

There are labor laws, OSHA laws and company policies that keep him safe and good working working conditions. The company is almost bankrupt too from too high of wages for menial work....and my husband will be the first to admit it. His job is only worth maybe $10/hour. He makes $28. That's the reason unions are losing. He said a trained monkey could do his job. Is that really worth $28/hour?????

And yes, a company can fire you for ANY and NO reason at all. In the 20 years that I have lived here, I have NEVER heard of it happening. If you get fired, its for a reason. There are still laws that companies have to comply with and company policies, rules that protect workers. I can understand why you think its so bad....but its really not. You will see. You will be ok.

@OhTenn So you advocate you and your husband live off the $10 an hour. Go for it. But don't apply for any food stamps or other type of aid while you're dying of starvation. Your states, southern states, receive more government aid than any other part of the country. Those laws you talk about were won by unions and when there are no more unions to fight for them, those laws will go away. Corporations are not benevolent. You can't see beyond the end of your nose.

@jwill1 Michigan has been loosing jobs at a steady pace for over 30 years. You lost them mostly because you made crappy cars that no one wanted to buy so they didn't. Not because of your governor or some tax increase. You've been loosing population for years because you didn't invest anything in your infrastructure. Detroit is a complete @!$%# hole. It's been a @!$%# hole for a lot longer than 8 years.

but if I EVER become so caught up in my beliefs that I can't even acknowledge when someone of a different opinion is somewhat right on something....God help me.

I really hope he does, but you're so thick I'll bet you never notice. Pot and Kettle there Mr Hypocrite.

As for how they got stuff "down" there - probably a storm drain near by - they're quite large.

As for power - many sewer lines have power running through them for when they're serviced. Not hard to tap those. I would question the quality of their TV reception though....

Probably everything was poked through while disassembled. They probably each have a piece of string in their pocket with length the diameter of the hole so's when they are out shopping they don't buy something too large. For example, my big dog would not fit the hole.

And I would lose the gnome. They are creepy enough in a garden.

I think in columbia they only have like 2 or 3 tv stations and broadcast over the same waves as radio, which explains the reception down in there, you have to remember they only see and hear what the goverment wants them to see and hear. Kind of like how our country is headed. They are happy so be it, I wish them the best of luck and a merry xmas.
