Reuters -- Gunmen shot five health workers on an anti-polio drive in a string of attacks in Pakistan on Tuesday, officials said, raising fears for the safety of workers immunizing children against the crippling disease.

It was not clear who was behind the shootings, but Taliban insurgents have repeatedly denounced the anti-polio campaign as a Western plot.

Health officials suspended the immunization campaign in Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city of 18 million people. Continue reading.

A Pakistani mother mourns over her daughter, who was killed while on the job as a polio vaccination worker, at a hospital morgue following an attack by gunmen in Karachi on Dec. 18. Gunmen on motorbikes shot dead five female Pakistani polio vaccination workers on Tuesday, police said, highlighting resistance to the country's immunization campaign. Four were killed in three different incidents in the sprawling port city and the fifth in the northwestern city of Peshawar, on the second day of a nationwide three-day drive against the disease, which is endemic in Pakistan.

Gunmen killed several people working on a government polio vaccination campaign in two different Pakistani cities on Tuesday, officials said. The attacks were likely an attempt by the Taliban to counter an initiative the militant group has long opposed.

If these people cannot stand up and rid themselves of who they know are the dangerously retarded amongst them, why should we even bother. I mean, these are usually village folk where everyone knows everyone else. Or does their religion cripple their ability to act? Like, well, maybe it did say that in the Koran.

I understand where everyone is coming from and I personally can't stand the Pakistani government. I hate that we give them so much money, but I think cutting all ties with them could be detrimental to our stronger allies in the region and us at home. Keep in mind that a large portion of the Pakistani government has ties to terrorist groups, and its entire intelligence community works closely with the those groups to plan terrorist attacks. For years analysts believe that it is a very volatile situation between purely politicians and other politicians linked with terrorists groups each waiting for an opportune moment to overthrow the other. Now keep in mind that this fragile government who could fall under control of terrorist organizations has disclosed the existence of 110 nukes to the U.N. and may have even more hidden. It is in the U.S.'s best interest to stay involved for now.

Ah, you see, it is the United States and the West that is the enemy! Providing vaccines. How Dare We?!

Yeah, that's sarcasm. Welcome to Pakistan, where if you get blown up by a terrorist, it is okay, as long as he was of the same faith.

Plotinus, did you even read the article, the city has 8 million people. These aren't country folks and no they don't know everyone in a city that big. Can't anyone of you see the pain in these peoples faces. Do you insult people you don't know just to insult them? Is there no compassion for people who are terrorized day in and day out? Do you see the faces on the children full of fear? You get your rocks off by seeing other people suffer? What the hell is wrong with some of you people?

Taliban insurgents have repeatedly denounced the anti-polio campaign as a Western plot.

They are 100% correct. This absolutely IS a Western plot. No doubt about it. Americans believe in saving lives and improving quality of life. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Taliban believes in death, destruction and dashed dreams.

First I'm going to say that I don't think we should have anything to with Pakistan. They are an ally of convience only. As long we keep giving them money they will smile and say that they are our friends. Unless it is inconvent for them.

I can understand why they would attack these aid workers though, after the doctor who gave shots to try and get DNA samples of the Bin Ladin family. They are afraid that this is just another attempt to root our enemies that they are harboring.

I understand Kent, it sucks that we give them so much money. But we were giving them money before the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, so the idea of them being an ally of convenience is out the window. The reality is that the Pakistani government is at risk of falling under terrorist control and they have disclosed the existence of 110 nukes to the U.N. The U.S. stays involved to keep those nukes out of terrorist hands.

And yes, good point Kent. I was thinking about the doctor that obtained Osama's DNA when I read this article.

These Islamists are the scum of the gutter that flows out of their Madarsas in the name of religion. That will stop only when Muslims in Pakistan will rise up, round up these ruffians and hang them. Only then ordinary people can live their lives in peace.

My first response - if they really don't want to be vaccinated, then let them opt out. After all, natural selection will eventually weed out the truly idiotic. On the other hand, they clearly don't want anyone else to get vaccinated, whether they wanted it or not. And furthermore, vaccination only works well when everyone is getting it. By these acts, the shooters are clearly attacking everyone else in their country and the region.

The Paki's are an ignorant people and do not deserve any help. They are lazy and stupid. They prefer barbarity over being civilized people. Stop giving them medicine, money, food, weapons or anything other than the back of our hands. They will screw everything around. I cannot wait until they declare the vacine is against Allah and therefore the murders of the innocent volunteers were performing their religious obligation in killing them.

Barbarians who kill in the name of their God have been doing this since the beginning of time...they will never learn how to be civilized until they start by teaching their ignorant children that it is NOT OK to kill...as long as the adults continue to foster their hatred for all that does not fit their religion, we will never rid this world of the killing of the innocent. Those workers who were killed are truly the heroes and ANY people who stand up to the tyranny of these barbarians should be honored by all in this world.

Everything you just said can easily fit the average American:

              1. Barbarians who kill in the name of their God (pretty much every American conflict since Columbus)

              2. Will never learn how to be civilized until they start by (sic) teaching their ignorant children that it is NOT OK to kill (i.e. who takes a mentally deranged kid to a shooting range in the first place, Mrs. Lanza?)

              3. As long as the adults continue to foster their hatred for all that does not fit their religion (the Tea Party on any given day)

              4. We will never rid this world of the killing of the innocent (maybe if we didn't launch so many drone strikes against innocent people IN PAKISTAN we could claim to be morally superior)

              5. Any people who stand up to the tyranny of these barbarians should be honored by all in this world (see Chalmers Johnson's "Blowback" as to whose tyranny should be stood down, ours or theirs)

Pakistan is rapidly sliding down the Somolia road to becoming a failed nation/state. It's people have become polarized due to the backward and stagnating religious intolence of a minority of their poplulation.

It's really time for the clear thinking people of this country to rise up and take their freedom back from those cowards (hiding under the cloak of religious purity) who try to make them toe the line through murder, hatred, fear and intimidation.

If they (the people of Pakistan) fail to do this at this critical point in their history, they have let these cowards and murderers win and they'll have nothing to look forward to but more of the same.

They really can't count on their government to do this. It really must start with each individual standing up and saying I've had enough, I won't take anymore and I want a better life for my children. A life without want, poverty, hatred, death and fear.

I think Zawahiri may live near the Grand Trunk road and in Wah or Attock. I find it fun when al-Qaida is in the news. I wonder if it was a FBI trick to get blood or not. Karachi is probably not where Zawahiri lives and I would think he lives further away from Afghanistan then Osama did but not that far from Osama’s hideout. Also what if Zawahiri has a big tree in his yard, that sounds fun. Man I hate those people and can’t wait for Zawahiri to be found and killed or just taken in. I want to see him in jail with bars again.
