I agree. Every rapist -- and that includes scumbag Catholic 'priests' who raped thousands of children in the US -- should incur a mandatory death penalty. Mandatory. No appeals, no life sentences. Death, immediately after the trial, and no worries about 'cruel and unusual' since rape is cruel and unusual for the victim.

How would it help if every rapist incurs a mandatory death penalty? They may end up targeting less people, but they will murder their victims. The end result would no doubt be the same so they have no incentive for sparing them.
And as for catholic priests I'm not surprised by the higher than normal percentage of pedophiles. Heterosexuals are less likely to find the idea of celibacy appealing.

Forget about the laws, weren't there any non-rapist men on that bus? Whatever happened to the idea that you just man up and protect a woman in distress? I don't care who she is; if I was on a bus and a bunch of men started trying to rape her, I would protect any woman. Guess nobody in India ever heard of such a thing. Or maybe they all are rapists?

Agree completely. Even in the case of too many people to defend against, you can at least get off the bus and run for the authorities to help. It's better than letting this go on for hours and doing something to help!
This story doesn't have all details. This bus only had the rapists, victim and her friend. They beat up the friend and carried out their heinous act. Bus driver and his friends were out on joyride in the bus and these unfortunate people got on that bus.
Chipper - if that is true then it's even worse because they were LOOKING for a victim - which is premeditation. I don't know what the penalty for rape is in India, but they need to set an example by arresting and convicting ALL of them. If they don't know who they all are, I'm sure that someone else knows who they are - either the driver or his friends. Give them the maximum penalty, which I believe is Life. Death penalty is good too, but at least life in prison for ALL of them.

If, in your national capital, a woman can not ride a bus safely, then your nation is a disgrace.

@Philosopher8: The woman's boyfriend tried to intervene. The rapists assaulted him and subsequently through him off the bus, just like they did to her.
This was not a bus picking up passengers, on a regular route. The bus driver had taken the bus home with him after work, and lured the victim on the bus. If any woman gets "unwanted" attention, other passengers will speak up. I know from experience. Most men do respect women and women's rights.

Each culture has to come to its own. Clearly, some are taking longer than others. Rage and anger is the first step in initiating change, and that's a good thing for the women in India.
Come to think of it, India has been independent for only about 60 years, free from the tyrannical hands of the British. They're learning independence as we are, one step forward, two back. The caste system in their culture is slowly slipping away, thanks to their realization that education is the answer to poverty. In the U.S., women are still fighting for equality, got to get rid of those dirty ol men that keep popping up with their idiotic science. They think sexuality is a "phase;" they prefer the mysticism - in the dark.
Women in the U.S. have not 'fought' for equality since the 1970's. Once wealthy women started landing positions that they desired in the corporate and the academic worlds, that 'fight' ended.
In India, men are just barely a step above the Paki's. As long as they are not the victim, they didn't see anything. If they are muslims, then the woman was begging for it by not completely covering their in a Burka. If they were Hindu, women are just above sheep and goats and are supposed to make themselves available to a man when he wants some.

ppl, please read the article completely before commenting. This was a private school bus and not public transportation. The bus driver was allowed to take the bus home after his shift. He parked the bus outside his home, when a few of his friends visited and came up with this idea to lure a woman. The incident happened in the night after 10:00PM, on a private bus with tinted glasses and curtains for privacy. I guess the curtains were to protect the school children from the sun during the daytime. There were no other passengers on the bus other than the girl and her boyfriend who boarded the bus thinking it was public transportation. They were allegedly ticketed for the commute to their destination. I hope Indian men/women are not so bone dead to allow something like this to happen during broad daylight. Human life is losing its value due to the number of ppl reproduced in that country. Hope they come to their senses before it is too late.
Rapes, even gang rapes, occur everywhere--there was one in Richmond CA in the past few years, at the high school. It's what the society does about the rapists that makes the difference. Look at the comparison of this with Muslim rape: in Pakistan or Afghanistan, the woman would be shamed/killed/jailed for "fornication" if none of the men came forward to testify. For sure the men get off with a slap on the wrist.

Use both of those brain cells at the same time. If it was Republicans there would be arrests made, a fair trial, and then a fast death penalty. It is more likely it must be Democrats and the rapists are just poor misunderstood vicitms of society who just need understanding and tolerence for the culture they were raised in. An arrest may or may not be made, a mock trial where experts will be paid to explain how the criminal is the real victim and either a conditional release or hand-slap sentence to teach them a lesson, followed by life-long welfare assistence to help them adjust to society.
If "Fair" trial and "fast death penalty" are synonymous with Republican, then Republican must also be synonymous with Chinese Communist and Taliban extremist as they also support show trials.

The picture of that woman pointing her fingers speaks volumes. I hope all the woman of India have her back and the modern men of India stand right behind them and don't back down until this sort of mentality is crushed by the government. It is an outrage in any country.
One would suspect that one person might not naturally understand that raping a woman was wrong, what one in a thousand? But to have a gang of men willing to participate in this disgustingly imoral, unsanitary, inhuman act and then beat their victum seems so impossible that one has to wonder if these people should be considered as part of a common race. The torture of woman is no less different in this country and maybe even more sinister because here it is lavishly advertised. Women in American are primarily seen and treated as sexual objects barely capable of engaging in a meaningful conversation. The media, including this network, demoralize, humiliate, subordinate, classify and suppress the female form until it is a plaything for men. Internet, Television, Movies, Video Games, corporations, retailers, sports and food networks portray women as the ideal slave breed for a man’s entertainment. What this constant source of social education achieves is exactly what the women in this country get. If you think that women are even remotely treated equally in this country you are in serious denial. The fact that you can point to a handful of woman in the media, politics and history, as representing equality is hysterical.
Women in this country have a small window of opportunity to reach success in this country. Unlike men, women are required to be beautiful, skinny, obedient and submissive in order to reach any position of power. A women being talented, strong, forceful and even resourceful enough to compete with men are automatically labeled with a list of adjectives that most animals would be offended by. Whereas, the same behavior and ambition represented by a male is seen as; empowered, regal and valiant. This ideal is not only encouraged by our society but is gloriously portrayed by almost every second of entertainment and media coverage given on almost every subject.
The strange paradox is that the majority of women have also been indoctrinated into this male fantasy of superiority. Women have been educated to tolerate and emulate being compliant and subordinate to men. Women make up almost 80% of the buying power in American and almost 51% of the population, and yet you will be hard pressed to see the corporate world and more significantly the political world equally represented by women. America is still a nation of slaves and it is primarily in the property of women and people below the threshold of poverty. There would be an unimaginable polar shift in consciousness and capsizing display of awe if the woman of the world ever woke up and took control of the power they already possess.
I often see moral grandstanding by men criticizing patriarchal societies elsewhere in the world. However I rarely see any interest in curving the sensational disempowerment of women here in America. In fact most men and even women in this country are quite happy to recognize that women are the sole property in a man’s world. Women here are quite regularly raped, abused, humiliated and molested and the situation is so vile that victims rarely talk out for fear of additional ridicule. And we wonder if the education our media provides us with is doing anything to our society? It defies the computational powers of the mind that this is even a question. If you don’t know that the media is your primary source of education, you might want to reconsider getting educated.

At this point, Costaire1 is only speaking of part of the women, because some women in America have no problem at all being viewed as a sex object. But along the same lines, what really needs to be done first is to start banning shows like the tot's pagent shows, or the whole issue will never be reconciled.

India's attitude on violence against women puts them in the typical third world country status along with Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Iran, Syria, etc. Of course, that means that muslim and islamic cults are synonymous to the violence.

You know I hate to say it since I dislike a lot of the Taliban actions, but if this rape happened in a Taliban controlled area they would round up the men involved in the rape and hang all of them in a public group execution.

India is severly overpopulated and its government is struggling to handle it. That means that resources to monitor streets and protect its citizens is limited. These people want justice for the brutal rape of the student. I can understand their anger and this young woman should be given justice for this horrible crime. However, if the Indian people want to prevent these kinds of crimes then they must work together and volunteer their services for action groups to monitor streets etc, train women in self defense and if necessary arm women. If they really want to change the attitudes of men then they need to start educating them when they are young in school with curriculum that teaches respect of a women's right to self determination.

I haven't followed this story as closely as maybe I should have, but could someone tell me what started all this? I had never thought of India as a place where these types of crimes were so prevalent or at least until now! I had always mistakenly believed that the punishment for these types of crimes in India have been so severe as to serve as a good deterrent! What have I missed that obviously was the starting point for these rapes to begin?? With as many goats as there are in India, I would have thought that any decent man in that country would have satisfied himself with one of those goats rather than risk death!!
