President Obama leaves the White House in the early morning hours of January 2, 2013. He will return to Hawaii, after coming back to Washington DC during his holiday to work on the fiscal cliff issue.
President Obama praised lawmakers and Vice President Joe Biden after the House of Representatives voted to pass a Senate measure to avert the most serious impacts of the so-called fiscal cliff.
Reuters reports — President Barack Obama departed the White House on Tuesday to resume his Hawaii vacation shortly after Congress approved legislation that raises taxes on the wealthiest Americans and avoids the fiscal cliff of across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts.
The president left the White House shortly before midnight. He had cut short his vacation to oversee negotiation of a deal before a year-end deadline.

Wow back to Hawaii on the tax payers dollars, so I guess the I care about the middle class was BS which I knew it was thanks for raising my taxes you bozo's. Happy Freaking New Year and you all should be fired. Have a nice Day.
people obama bought a 30 million dollar home in hawaii ,hawaii is his home not illinois
Go back to Hawaii, Obama. You deserve your vacation paid for by the taxpayers not to mention the pay raises the Congress gets. What a bunch of @!$%#s.
he is weary alright form flying back and forth to Hawaii spending the taxpayers money.
Thank you President Obama! Another great job!! Yes we can!! Now we must vote out the party of No!!
Happy New Years!!
Republicans can keep crying and lamenting and gnashing their teeth all they want. Obama is a winner and they are a bunch of whiny losers.
They keep trying to stymie the president and yet at every turn he thwarts their pathetic efforts. So far the score is Obama - 10- Republicans -O-. Sorry losers.
If your hearts were in the right place you wouldn't come up on the losing end every time. Your hearts are full of hatred and venom towards this man and you have absolutely no legitimate basis for your disgusting attitudes.
I hope you can look within yourselves- examine your true motives and find some peace. This country has been running up debt and deficits for over 200 years and suddenly in the midst of a financial crisis you guys suddenly see the light and want to fix it NOW.
Who tries to solve debt problems in the middle of a crisis. You solve your crisis. You stabilize your ship, and then you worry about your debt. Only a republican would try to get religion on an issue at the absolutely wrong time and try to do everything ass backwards. If McCain had won in 2008 you would not have this religious fervor or over zealous fanaticism about the debt that the republicans are in the throes of.
You all need to sit and contemplate on your true motives and stop lying to yourselves, because no one is fooled. You are very transparent to all except yourselves because you exist in this psycho collective bubble where you only allow your twisted illogical ideas to enter. The republican party is becoming more irrelevant by the day. Hopefully more of the people in that party who have some common sense will show some courage and allow their voices to be heard above the psycho babble currently coming from the party. It is sad to watch the demise of the republican party.
Wrong pal. Both go hand in hand. The budget problem only gets worse and harder to solve by waiting. Giving more money to these fools in DC is like giving drugs to a junkie, it only gets worse.
the tax payer is paying for him to go back and forth to Hawaii. why didn't he just stay and do his job in the first place. that's all he knows is how to spend the tax payers money. can't understand why people voted for him in the first place. he didn't do anything before and he hasn't done anything yet but spend the tax payers money and try to raise tax on the people who make the jobs. have to put with and listen to the same old crap yet for over three years. unbelievable. should have gotten a business man who knows what he is doing to do the job right in the first place. now its to late.
We are now stuck with four more years of this arrogant divisive lack of leadership. His next move will be to increase debt and spending. Hope the Congress will stop bending over for him this time
Obama's parade will end one day when the US is completely broke and there will no longer be enough people paying taxes to support the ones that pay nothing.
To all of the Obama bashers: Did you not do well in History in High School or College? First of all, this President was just re-elected, quite handily, and is actually trying to do for the people what he promised he'd do. He is doing his job. Second, a HUGE part of the first 4 years in office was spent cleaning up the unbelievable mess George 2 left behind. Barak Obama didn't start the fire. In fact, he was one of the few Senators to vote against the "war" to get those non-existent WPM's. But with Obama at the helm, we did get Saddam Hussein. Score: Bush 0 Obama 1. And who was in charge when Bin Lauden was taken out? Right - Obama. Score: Republicans 0 Obama 2. So before you just starting talking to hear yourself, read and learn something! Your idiocy is showing.
You say Obama bashes don't know history but you leave out one of the most MAJOR events --911 --did bush ask for that 9 months after taking office. Come on pal, stop with the we won stuff. How are we going to fix the financial mess.
If you consider Obama defeating Romney as "quite handily", the popular vote was 51 Obama, 47 Romney. If the percentage was used in Employment, with only a 4% split, that would be analogous to a nation being fully employed at 96% employment.
No wonder the dems have it wrong; you employ fuzzy math! The reelection wasn't a landslide; Nixon's was a landslide but he resigned later. Maybe history will repeat itself!
Oh, and one more piece of information. Bush-2 took more vacation days than any other President. The problem is simply that President Obama happens to be from Hawaii so he gets more attention the few times he has traveled home.
I thought he was from Chicago? Afterall, he was an IL senator!
True Stinky, unfortunately Obama has his residency in Chicago, but was raised in several states and countries including Hawaii. My guess is he likes the Hawaiian stash better.
With Biden working for Reid to reach the deal, why couldn't the bill have been signed electronically from HI (like it eventually was)? Why waste fuel, increase carbon footprint, and taxpayers money on the round trip? Grandstanding is his method, ruin of the US is his goal!
jrfgolf ,
if not for unions we would all be working for pennies, never can understand how reasonable people can shoot themselves in the foot and drink the kool aid from the people who shut down U.S. factories and move jobs to third world companies where they can safely exploit people while raking in billions.
Your lord and saviors the republicans are working on a two class system us and the masters and you seem to be blind to it all. If they spent less time sticking their noses into the bedrooms and health issues of women MAYBE they could do something productive than take a Clinton surplus and take us into a war and debt on hidden costs and then block every project that could have helped this country.
Keep drinking the Kool aid.
This Presidency is FUBAR, and like all of DC. What do you bet he flew to Hawaii because his stash was getting low, and Ray couldn't make it to the Pot House, I mean the White House.
If your taxes went up as of the 1st, that's because the tax break on social security expired. It was only suppose to be for 1 year but was extended for another year. The tax break wasn't permanent, including the Bush era tax cuts. I find that most people on blogs like this are conservative. Which means, they don't have jobs and always anger when they do. No wonder Obama won and I love it. Stay angry! A heart filled will anger and darkness has no light in it. I'm happy McCain and Mitt the liar isn't about to step foot into the White House unless they're invited guests. Let's keep it that way. I LOVE IT! Watch all the hate come my way from the conservatives. Show your colors again.
I think we should change the law where a president can serve for more than 8 years. That way OUR PRESIDENT Obama will have enough time to fix Bush mess.
A lot of that $5 million vacation hasn't been spent yet.
yea divide and conquer hes done his job well not too late to impeach
It always amazes me the vitriol that fills any dicussion regarding political process.
To me, politicians are being placed in increasingly untenable positions. We as citizens, not they, I think, have some very unrealistic expectations with regard to many issues, and those expectations fuel so much unproductive finger pointing.
There is no way that each sucessive generation of Americans gets to have more and better everything. That is the expectation that, in many ways, our society has implied to us, but to me it is simple math. There are many more of us than there used to be. There is a finite amount of resources (any resource... pick one). The tension of our voracious demand (better faster cheaper more) and the capabilities of our systems, and planet, is beginning to weigh on the ability to sustain our historical optimism and perceived "forward momentum".
In my mind, all of us, each one of us, has to realize that and back off our individual expecation a bit... try to live in a way that is more self contained. Not radically, and some have much more room to move than others, but true change won't come from legislation, it will come either from catastrophe, or free will choice on a massive scale. I am hoping (and hopeful) for free will change, but as long as all we can do is blame others, I am not sure that my optimsm is well founded.
So he and his buddies scare the hell out of the American people for a month or so. Come up with a stop gap plan that does not really solve the issue and will cause even more problems down the road. Then heads back to his vacation. Im so sorry, We The People, made you have to interupt your tropical vacation. We the lowly troggs who dwell under your reign.
Thanks again all you socialist-voting liberals and could you please tell Obama that for some reason the "no tax increase for the middle class" skipped me--maybe he can straighten this out when he gets back from Hawaii.
For some reason-I'm sure it is an error--I'm looking at state, federal and local tax increases totalling $1,500.00. I say it's an error because I'm solidly in the middle of the lower middle class. I respectfully bring this up as I genuflect to the vacationing social engineer.
