East Timor's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, center, directs motorists as he tries to clear a traffic jam outside the presidential office in Dili on Jan. 7, 2013.

The prime minister of East Timor turned traffic cop on Monday after his car got stuck in a traffic jam outside the presidential office in the capital Dili.

Xanana Gusmao, who led the armed resistance that resulted in East Timor's independence from Indonesian rule in 2002, immediately got out of his car and began directing drivers after finding that there was no police officer on the street, the European PressPhoto Agency reports.

In the US all the streets and buildings would have been cleared out within a mile radius, manholes welded shut and 400 cops all with guns.

      MNJL,

Isn’t it interesting, in their democracy, PM Gusmao is able to meet people face to face in traffic in the middle of an intersection, unaided. In our democracy, President Obama needs an army of support staff, police, secret agents, make-up artists and up to their necks armed SWAT squads to shake a hand of one or two supporters hungry for a photo opportunity.

      Where did we go wrong??

Obama would not even stop using Air Force One at Taxpayer's Expense. So if he REALLY wants "Fair" Taxes, where are Obama's Taxes for the refund to the taxpayer's for use of Air Force One. You say it can not be done? The current Governor of FL, Rick Scott, sold the State Plane and uses his OWN Corporate Jet at his OWN expense AND does NOT take a Salary, if only Obama would do the same.

Scott, the tea party nazi who thinks he's above the law you mean?

The guy slashed FL education by over 10%?

The dummy who decided to cut taxes for his rich pals despite FLs $3.6 billion budget gap?

The same Scott who hates immigrants?

That clown is a menace to society.

Whoa whoa whoa. Hold your horses there, Kurt. I'm not a particularly big Obama fan myself, but holding Rick Scott (perpetrator of one of the largest Medicare fraud schemes to date) up as someone to be idolized is going a little too far.

Toast, Yes, Rick Scott, the first FL Governor, in many decades, BOTH Rep and Dem, that actually reign in state spending that has been out of Control, Surely a lot better than the once Rep Gov Crist now with the Taxaholic Obama Wing.

Scott did keep promises that were entirely within his executive power: He didn't take a salary and he sold the state plane. A Taxaholic Obama would NEVER do this.

With the help of the Republican-controlled Legislature, he ended tenure for new teachers and signed off on a formula to pay them based on how their students perform. Wow, actual pay for performance, yes, I know, a Union Thug's Nightmare.

He also required state workers to contribute 3 percent of their wages to the state pension fund, though that proposal is being challenged in court. Wow, workers actaully funding their a SMALL portion of their OWN retirement instead of the old Taxaholic way of stiffing 100% of Pensions on the hard working taxpayers.

Toast, you obviously have not known Scott while in Immokalee, he is a great supporter of LEGAL immigrates and trade with Latin America. Just because he has shown VALID concerns with ILLEGAL immigration, you have to resort to the "Hate Card".

The "Clown" as a menace to society were the previous FL Governors, BOTH Rep and Dem. We finally have a Governor with Common Sense and a buddy to the Fl Taxpayer which Taxaholics hate.

As for FL' budget Deficit, Scott had the ability to halt Florida’s twenty-year history of billion-dollar state deficits, which by 2011 became almost $500 million in debt reduction. The previous FL Govs, BOTH Rep and Dem, were such Spendalholics to achieve want Rick Scott achieved.

Kurt, if he is using his own plane than Tax payers are paying for it in Tax returns. Just another ploy of Florida not wanting to foot there own expenses and letting everybody else pay for them. They expect Truck Drivers to hall their freight out of state for free. Do you now know what those "Say no to Cheap Freight" stickers mean.

            #3.7 - Mon Jan 7, 2013 2:06 PM EST

Nope, 6dogs, using his own Corporate Jet (American made) that he ALREADY owned. He had state jet sold that went to reduce the state deficit. Obama has OVER $1 Billion Campaign Chest, one would think he would use his OWN Corporate Jet instead fleecing the Taxpayers, especially considering his "pay fair share in taxes" rhetoric. BTW, the State of FL should NOT be subsidizing Truck Drivers or any other corporations. It is NOT the Taxpayers job to pay for Truck Drivers, it is the Employer, Self-Employed and the Consumer's job, Economics 101.

Obama would not even stop using Air Force One at Taxpayer's Expense.

I would prefer that the most powerful man in the world fly in the most secure plane in the world, regardless of what the reason is he has to fly. This is a perfect use of my tax dollars. To whine about it is really showing desperation.

Actually, no problem Obama using Air Force One. Just shows the hypocrisy of "paying one's fair share in taxes". Obama claims that everyone needs to pay their "fair share", so to be fair, Obama should pay taxes on ALL the benefits that he gets as President. Yet another Obama hypocrisy on the "fair share" applies to the other person only.

You got to be kidding, with Obama directly traffic, it is Union Thugs first, then Welfare Gov Career Individuals while the hard working productive Citizens may not proceed in the traffic for they have not paid their "fair" share in taxes yet. The must pay their "fair" share first at a much greater % rate of a Obama Supporter to be allowed to proceed.

When our traffic lights go out you will not see a cop except to tell an exmilitary cop directing traffic to move on or be arrested. Good for him.

Seems like a productive leader. Instead of sitting in the car demanding something be done he actually used the authority granted to him to be helpful to the public rather than his own interests. Of course this is one isolated event so I can't say he is that great, but he certainly set a nice example here.

I wonder if there was supposed to be an officer in the street and where were they?

Funny story! I was in New York City years ago and there was a bad traffic jam on E. 132 Street, I believe, near a Catholic church. A Franciscan friar - in full habit - came out and directed traffic. Did a good job too.
