Police officers stand around a local train that derailed and crashed into a residential building in Saltsjobaden outside Stockholm on Jan. 15, 2013.
Reuters reports — A cleaning lady allegedly stole a Swedish train and drove it off the end of the tracks and smashed into a house outside Stockholm on Tuesday.
It was not clear how the woman, around 20, got access to the key needed to start the train. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but the train was carrying no other passengers as it was in the early hours and no one in the house was hurt.
A train cleaner was injured after police say she stole a train and crashed it into a house in Sweden. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.
"The cleaner drove the train at high speed, considerably higher than normal on that stretch, to where the rails end and crashed into a house," said Jesper Pettersson, spokesman at Stockholm Public Transport (SL).
The train ploughed past the end of the line and vaulted over a street separating the house from the depot, crashing through a balcony and into a downstairs room in the upscale suburb of Saltsjobaden. SL and police were investigating how she had gained access to the cabin and been able to drive the train.

Just Great. Now this cleaning lady just makes train stealing harder for the rest of us.
Well maybe she was derailed with a midlife crisis, and she wanted the fastest way out of town. It's not everyday a person gets on the fast track to such a unique start to a life of crime. Or maybe she just really wanted some of that famous Swiss chocolate, and it really was irresistible. Whatever happens, just make sure in the future she doesn't clean anymore places with things that involve transportation. Unless they are wheelchairs or roller blades.
What? She crashed into a Swiss chocolate factory in Sweden? Did I miss something?
That train of thought is just going to get you in trouble with the posters of the female persuasion.
Maybe her career was going off track and she just needed a little training.
BOZOhussen tearfully vowed to bring sweeeping Train stealing reform before the UN.. news to follow on SNL.- the only TRUTH in Journalism!!. Cleaning ladies do not wreck houses, hate-mongering trains do!!
LMFAORITF!!!!!!!!! I think they should ban all people wanting to Steal a train, and they should ban all trains JIC they forget its a crime to steal one.
This train surfaced on invisible tracks and ran it into a house! MY GOODNESS!
That is NO to treat a train.
Apparently she wasn't able to reach the 88 miles per hour necessary to energize the flux capacitor.
trains kill. ban them now....or at least high capacity carriage compartments.
Just a thought...why would you place a house and a train track in close enough proximity for something like this to occur?
Maybe it is houses that kill.....ban all houses....ban everything.
"Train" this, "train" that, can we stop talking about weddings for a minute people.
Arnold just can't seem to keep his hands off the hired help!
Damn that sounds like fun, until the cuffs go on.
House for sale. close to transportation. very airy open ambience. large entryway. traffic flows well. cleaning lady included.
Her life must have been a real train wreck. So sad.
One heck of a joy ride...
Stop it! you guys are killing me! I've got to take a breath!
So, do Sweden's cleaning people also drink too much Tequila and then try to drive?
Maybe part of her cleaning lady training?
This is why you can't trust people. One moment you hire them to clean, and the next she hijacks your train. There goes the neighborhood.
At least now the (former) cleaning lady has a big mess to clean up...
See, the problem with stealing a train is that, no matter how fast you go, you can only get to wherever the tracks lead you.
By the way, how the "F" does one steal a train anyway?
...and what do you charge them with, "grand theft choo-choo?"
"Weekend Update" on SNL will have something to say about this, no doubt!
Paraphrasing LaPew, "Only a good train with a cleaner can stop a bad train with a cleaner."
Maybe she was just playin' with the controls and accidentally got it moving down the track.
In Charlottesville there used to be a dead-end railroad spur belonging to the Southern R.R. where a crew often parked a locomotive overnight. GP 15 or 20? Across from the old Albemarle Hotel. When the weather was cold they sometimes left it running all night. I think it had locks on the cab doors. But the main antitheft device was a switch on the railroad spur, that the loco had to pass over to get out onto the system. Unless the lock on the switch was unlocked and the switch thrown, the loco would derail and end up harmless offsides of the track.
Well, David, this one derailed, also, and wound up harmlessly inside of a house.
BAN ALL ASSUALT TRAINS!!
House must have been built too close to and lined up to dead end of track!
Looks like that thing was electric. Fortunately probably not as heavy as a GP model.
"Maybe she was just playin' with the controls and accidentally got it moving down the track'
lol.. Really? A train does 2 things. It goes...and it stops.. It was stopped, so what did she think it was going to do when she "just played with the controls" ?
David, I used to work for Missouri Pacific RR as a hostler(basically a valet in the yard, we took train engines and fueled them among other things and put them on certain tracks for the engineers to pickup). We never turned them off, they just idiled all the time. To "drive" a train you need a tool called a reverser that is bascially a universal key. You didn't leave them on the trains. Somebody showed her how to operate it. There are a couple of switches to flip or you're going nowhere.
Maybe she accidentally hit the throttle with her mop handle.
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.. oh crap there's a house in my way!
You know that's going to be an interesting conversation with the insurance company;
Female drivers!
Hey now -
texting and train driving never works..
"The woman obtained the keys to the train and drove it away before it crashed into the building"
When economic conditions go on a tail spin and downwards, crazy things can happen.
Wars and high oil price manipulations are culprits here.
"Wars and high oil price manipulations are culprits here."
sweden is at war? sweden had low oil prices?
you must be a yank jonathan.
let me clue you to some news mate. there is a world outside of the u s of a, and ya may be surprised to learn that swedes see things a wee bit differently than you.
They must now see very well at all to not see that house.
Hey Knight: I think Jonathan was joking...damn, you Brits don't have very keen senses of humor, do ya...mate?
I think a great many see things differently than Jonathan. Not all yanks are like Jonathan
tricolour, i'm aussie
sorry if i missed a joke. i've met too many yanks who think that the rest of the world is their 51st state
Knight - I am a Yank - and I am of the persuasion we dont need no 52nd state (I am saving 51 for PR if they want to join). Also - I am a Yank who when she see's somone use the term Mate thinks first AUssie, than Kiwi, and than maybe Brit. But I will admit most Yanks I know cant tell the difference.
hollykb, you are all apples in my book! aces!
Hey Knight, as one who has lived in Australia, and the term Yank was derogatory, can I refer to you as POM?
call me whatever you like. i was in the navy, nco, and i've hear 'em all. used most of them myself.
my mum is a yank, and i've never thought the term derogatory.
Actually Texas is trying to seceed from the Union so it may be 49 states. And in that case you can send all the rest of the close-minded, sheltered, and ignorant down there to join them in Texas where they can all live there and go on believing that every world problem and every person's personal problems are solely based on the reasoning that the liberals caused it.
You forgot to mention Bush.
Rather than have Texas leave the union, which they should be entitled to since they joined it of their own free will, I say we just kick a few states out like New York, New Jersey, and California. I'd rather lose a few states that are completely out of touch with reality than to lose a state as wonderful and hard working as Texas. Alaska, and any other state that wants to should be allowed to bow out any time they want. Our country has gone straight into the @!$%#ter, and they have a right to move on.
Sweden operates as a socialist country. Poverty is not an option. This woman has access to an education. She is guaranteed health care. And the Swedish economy is in very good shape. Whatever she was trying to accomplish is probably of a more personal nature. Anyone want to bet her train engineer boyfriend has dumped her?
Knight- Most Americans wish that we would stay out of worlds business. Our politicians and law makers are the ones who make those decisions. Yes its true we vote for them but its usually the choice between a douchebag or turd.
Kickin NJ, NY and California out you would be really messing with the fed budget those are 3 of the largest "donor" states they pay more into the Fed tac base than they get out. Did you know red states tend to be those who get more from the FEd govt and blue states tend to be donor states.
Damn house jumped right in front of that train.
kcsven -(Female drivers!)
You do realize, statistically, most are trained by male drivers, their fathers, other male relatives, boy friends, in Drivers Ed and then must pass the tests, performed by male testers, right?
Insurance companies have known for since they started gathering information, men, especially younger, are far more prone to accidents then women.Which is why they pay higher rates, especially in the 16-26 age group, then females. In fact, in all age groups. This might also be enlightening according to just some of the fast facts I pulled by one such official site that tracts stats and research finding by scientists looking into the data.
@windancer song--Does your post have anything to do with a woman stealing a train?
and then there is DANICA
Winddancer - yeah we are better drivers but please lets leave our femanism aside and understand that this is one of those we laugh at. ANd lets face it she did run it into a house and it started on tracks....
ALso constanly taking offense at this type of things justifies the term Feminazi
Take another hit.

@windancer song--Does your post have anything to do with a woman stealing a train?
If you look at the top of my post, you will notice, I was addressing the comment made by another poster.
which follows.
kcsven -(Female drivers!)
As the implication obviously was made, female drivers are bad drivers compared to men. Hence my simple clarification to any who also may feel this way. Of which I have run across countless times in my patrolling career. Instead of my making some silly come back, I do what I have often done. Share facts to help others understand what I am passing on isn't my opinion.
Even a funny joking remark which is prejudice against a group and untrue, can be harmful to others. It can hurt others feelings, and cause arguments down the road. Better to nip it gently in the bud, then let it stand for others to assume it is correct. There is no offense taken. If we can help each other learn through facts, more misunderstandings, and assumptions that are wrong, can be avoided.
koolandy, you are a right dill donger. go shove off. windancer is pretty spiffy
Some people have no sense of humor....
@windydancer...I'll remember your overly verbose treatise on the superior attributes of the female driver the next time(s) I see one of them applying makeup using the car visor mirror while steering with their knees @ 70mph on the expressway! Disagree with your theory on competitiveness! Female drivers seemingly cannot tolerate being passed on the highway! I tried to state this in plain old USA English...Not into dialectics! They are novel, albeit ineffective! More later..have priorities to meet. Res Ipsa Loquitur!
Knight who Says Nothing that matters,
go shove your sword up your spiffy arse for all the Yanks who laugh at you!!!
What is it with some of you? I am a yank, who has no problems being called one because (surprise) that is what I am, and I would gladly take an aussie as a friend quicker than most of the people here in the states. You guys need to chill out with the name calling and quit taking quick offense to things. Jeez.
The internet is serious business.
State of A worn A$$,
Could you swallow the Knight's sword any deeper???
Hey, not my fault you have a thing against aussies lol
S of A your funny and i do like aussies.
The truth is these MSN articles are horrible, however the comments are a must read!
I cant get enough!
Windy Cancer has obviously never seen how bad women drivers are. It has everything to do with skill and competence. I've been in countless situations with ignorant women drivers. Personally I think women should have to take more difficult driving classes to earn their license to prove that they can handle a vehicle.
It's true. Most of the articles here are pretty bad in reporting the story. But yes, most comments are a must read. Especially on articles like this one.
I apologize for being off topic, but since some people won't let this die here goes.
theogbogus-(Windy Cancer has obviously never seen how bad women drivers are. It has everything to do with skill and competence)
I guess it was too much to hope for, some people could read read between the lines, when I posted the following sentence in my comment earlier:
Of which I have run across countless times in my patrolling career.
So I will just put it back out there clearly for those who have difficulty understanding. I have written thousands of tickets to men and women, for the county in which I worked full time enforcing laws. And, no, I didn't love writing tickets. I wished people would obey the laws to begin with as I hated seeing people hurt I have seen foolish women and men breaking the law, and neither sex is exempt from stupidity. Does that make it clear enough?
Just because there are proved differences in how men and women IN GENERAL behave behind the wheel, doesn't mean there won't be countless exceptions to those rules.Anyone who goes to google can check for themselves.
For those who think this is my personal opinion, go do your own checking! My ego isn't into looking smart. I just pass on what I have learned to try and help inform the public who might actually care. If you don't , then don't read and reply,it's that easy.
It's not my job to cure those who refuse to learn. Or give up their petty prejudices, bigotry or ugly derogatory beliefs hidden behind joking. That when called on about, folks suddenly self righteously claim is humor and claim others must not have a sense of humor if they don't join in.Not when it comes at another person's belittling. It is also really pathetic, that with so many other articles worthy of interesting comments, some just have nothing better to do, then insult folks instead of coming up with positive contributions which could actually enlighten and inspire folks.Instead of bringing the mood down.
I guess there will always be a few who keep their attitudes and perspectives in the ditch. My apologies to the rest who are looking for more positive input. Some trolls just don't know when to quit.
Yet another reason not to live right next to train tracks
Suddenly.....TRAIN!
Just how close is that house to the railroad tracks?
too close?
Must be practically on top of it since the caption below the bottom picture says "A derailed train hangs on the edge of the track after it crashed into the side of a residential building".
close enough. Probably went through thousands of set of good china over the years
Oh dear now Sweden will have to ban trains. They've become assault weapons.
BOZOhussen has started a UN anti-Train agenda...Bush caused the wreck with the aid or a YOUTUBE video...Over-the-Hilla'ie reaffirms with CIA reports!!
GEEZZZZ - This sure was a train wreck waiting to happen!
Congrats to the Architect. How many houses can take that kind of hit and still be standing?
And be referred to being in "an upscale neighborhood."
"It sounded just like a train!"
Looks like they need to "train" their staff better... groan!
Have you ever heard the comment, "so ugly she could make a train take a dirt road" well here's proof.
"how many more? how many more mr. speaker?"
ITS BIRD ???? ITS A PLANE ?????? OH SHI* ITS A TRAIN
Obviously she wasn't trained in the operation of the train.
She may not have been professionally trained to operate the train but she certainly got it moving easily enough. I honestly wouldn't have a clue. I've never been in the conductors section of a train so maybe it's actually easier than it looks, but I doubt it.
It looks like a commuter type train like the L train used in Chicago. Not sure if it's still there but the O'Hare airport used to have a full mockup of the conductor's compartment of one of the L trains in the Blue line area, along with basic instructions on how to drive it. It was VERY simple - a lever, push it forward to go forward, pull backwards to go backwards. The further you move it the faster the train goes.
Hey! Where's my train keys?
Well, frankly, I'm for train control. We need to keep trains out of the hands of the mentall ill. Perhaps a database of all train owners?
Well, as this one proved, she may not be mentally ill, but she is certainly mentally challenged.
OK, so where did she think she was going? It's not like you can head off down just any road.....THINK or thwim...
Always wanted to drive one of those when I was a kid.
Guess she was on too much 'speed'.
Cassandra Jones you better watch your speed...
Seriously though, it looks like a pretty low speed collision, how did it derail? Must've gone through a red light and a switch thrown the wrong way. Where did she think she was going to take it? I mean it's a train, all they have to do is follow her tracks!
She drove it past the end of the line
The police guy looks like he is saying WTF?
Only in Sweden man.
H ha ha ha ha
