A photo released on Jan. 20, 2013 by the Armed Forces of the Philippines Western Command (AFP-WESCOM) shows the US Navy ship USS Guardian remaining stuck in the vicinity of the Tubbataha Reef, western Philippines, on Jan. 19.
The U.S. Navy ship USS Guardian remains stuck on a reef off the Philippines four days after the minesweeper ran aground.
In a statement, the U.S. Navy said preliminary findings of a review by the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency found that digital navigation chart data was inaccurate and had "misplaced the location of Tubbataha Reef." This "may have been a factor in the Guardian grounding."
"While the erroneous navigation chart data is important information, no one should jump to conclusions," U.S. Pacific Fleet spokesman Capt. Darryn James was quoted as saying in the statement. "It is critical that the U.S. Navy conduct a comprehensive investigation that assesses all the facts surrounding the Guardian grounding."

The USS Guardian remains trapped on the Tubbataha Reef in a photo taken on Ja. 19, 2013 and released on Jan. 20.
Photographs showed the ship had moved on the reef. Initially it was pointed bow first into the reef, but it has now turned 90 degrees.
The Navy Times reported that areas of the ship were flooded, and cited the Navy as saying there had been a "slight increase to a port list" Saturday.

Don't worry, the ocean is rising from all the corrupt Republican OIL & FINANCIAL corporate MONARCHY'S 3x's too high-priced HIGHLY POLLUTANT GASOLINE! Give it a few more days, the oceans rising faster than they expected!
We should have been on "OUR VERY OWN" Natural Gas for home & automobile a long, long time ago but you know how corruption is, MONEY FIRST & the American People SECOND!
I'll bet the Engineering Officer has a few more gray hairs today, Too bad my Old Salvage ship the USS Coucal (ASR-8) wasn't in the area, we had high pressure tunneling pumps onboard the divers could tunnel with, create a channel and refloat during high tide. They decommissioned her and towed it as a target in the early 1990's, she's now with Davy Jones locker!
No one is perfect and people make mistakes and the taxpayer always pays. Look what the voters did to this country in 2008 and we are still paying
We were paying even before then, but now we kind of enjoy it and open wide...
Bingo one step closer to insolvency LOVE IT
Those who can, serve. Those who can't make snide asinine remarks.
Iran did it.
Paine McCain and Graham Crackers Navy.
Capture me . i wanna be a POW Hero like McCain. I do want all the fellow prisioners to have to wipe my butt.
That is not a homosexual act according to my Hero Senator Paine McCain and his little southern boy Graham Cracker.
Helium, thats the future, helium I say. No belay that make it baloons, lots of friggen baloons. It is quite possible we may never hear from that navigational watch team ever again. LC-20 bound.
No worries, Gilligan and the professor will save the day.
Not as funny as this urban legend:
This is the transcript of a radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10-10-95.
Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

And of course, you already knew that what you posted isn't a US Navy transcript and it wasn't released by the CNO. It's actually a variation on a running joke that goes back at least seventy years, seen in its first form as a conversation between the British navy and a lighthouse on the Irish coast. See "obstinate lighthouse" on snopes.com, wikipedia, etc.
@triumph;huh,must really be something new for any radar to pickup oil slicks.just curios about there 0d01 dept. guess its not in the bm 3/2 or semanship books about 'sounding' anymore.what that was used for in real early sailing was for depth as relevent to lowest point of the keel.had other uses as well including debre areas.was taught how to by few of older bm's when i was active in 80's.useful knowledge as if the maps are outdated and you see the bottom you might not run aground.
Under the right conditions, radar MAY see an oil slick as a difference in sea return. The patch of oil can be smoother than the surrounding sea. It's possible that computerized radars might do this better than a radar operator using a classic radar with operator preference adjustments for sea return.
I think that Captain is peeling potatoes now & if he isn't he should be because that's a bonehead mistake to make. Running your ship agound ON a reef is a real career killer.
looks like the wackiest ship in the navy. this guy will get promoted.
Anyone need a job? Heard through the grapevine that some ship will be needing a new skipper ..... at least after it starts floating again.
This is so embarrassing! Someone in charge of that ship better be getting ready for an early retirement or worst a letter of reprimand which is as good as a career ender. You have the most advanced tech on your ship, if you're not using it then you better explain what you were doing while on duty.
Meg Corello, there are two words for you Butt Hole
let's not forget that reefs and sea mounts continue to grow over the years. Minesweeper are the least capable platforms and the area has not been charted for many many many years.
YOU CAN BET THEY KNOW WHERE ATLEAST ONE REEF IS NOW,... YA THINK??
It's easy to make fun of the navy, but remember this is your best line of defense. It's you your laughing at
Break the damned thing up and sell it for kindling - OBAMA said we don't need no mo ships. Obama says we can now use drones ... so close the NAVY, sell-off the ships, lay-off the sailors and give the monetary savings to the poor fo mo welfare ...
It is not fair ... the CO will be cashiered out of the USN for sinking his command ... probably short of retirement.
OBAMA sunk a country and he kept his job.
Maybe the CO can get a job on the re-floated Costa Concordia ...
The word Navy obviously is not derived from the word navigation.
Human error is unpredictable but night navigation verses nearing the coast line during daytime navigation hours is predictable. Only making assumptions and the cat is still not out of the bag on exactly what went wrong but, by looking at the overhead aerial photo of the ship and position on the reef, it looks like the ship was moving at a fast enough clip (in the middle of the night close to the shore line) that it left a very well indentation left of center of the fuselage at the ships mid-way point. The reef looks accumulated from the hull ramming into it with enough speed to render the ship a ground. Night navigation is routine but was their passage close to the coastline a routine coarse and therefore objects, like the reef and other shallow obstructions well known or other human errors involved? Waiting..over...
Tom Brady is the Captain of the sinking Patriots ship ... Too bad ... pretty boy Tommy loses the BIG ONE AGAIN ...
Maybe Giselle can give us some words of wisdom again this year.
I couldn't care less about the career of the person at fault. What's sad is that the reef is being destroyed! A living organism that takes so much time to grow and flourish. I am a diver and any time I hear of an oil spill or something like this incident, I of course think "What the heck?" to the person who made the mistake, but it is the consequences that the ocean/environment suffer that is the real tragedy that upsets me. SMH
I agree Breazy! This reef is incredibly damaged now. We can only hope that once the ship has been removed that it will start to regrow. Of course, this will take many many years. But with all the pollution and warming of the seas its going to be even harder.
in my job in the navy navigation was inportant dont correction to sea maps so things like this wouldnt happen to our multi million dollar ships and i must say there was a big mistake by both the people looking out the window and the people who are suppose to make sure it didnt run aground well say good by to the captain the executive officer and the navigator they sure will never be on a ship again it makes me wonder how they couldnt clearly sea what was happing with all the resources they have its a shame for this to happen maybe lack of sleep had to do with this all who live that life know about that lol but i think the shame enough of knowing what happen is enough that they need no more salt in there scars the to sum it up mistakes happen and yes they cost alot but if you where driving tired would honestly pull over no most people think there superman and think nothing will happen until it happens accidents happen they dont need people saying more but to hope that no one got hirt people to all my sailors on that ship im sure it was routine and and something went wrong maybe an engine failed you and i hopoe you are all good peace out dynamis ex cardias translation will to fight keep fighting
Huh?
