"They're not walking around telling kids, 'Hurry up and get to class' with a gun around their neck," Fontana school police Chief Billy Green said. "Parents need to know that if there was a shooter on their child's campus that was equipped with body armor or a rifle, we would be limited in our ability to stop that threat to their children."
"If the wrong person gets ahold of the gun, then we have another shooter going around with a gun. What happens then?" said James Henriquez, a 16-year-old sophomore who just enrolled at Fontana High School this week after moving from Texas. Full story

Santa Ana school police Sgt. Kevin Philips checks out a rifle from the police armory in Santa Ana, Calif., Jan. 24. The officers split their time between 44 schools in the district and keep the rifles in a safe at their assigned school or secured in their patrol car each day before checking the weapon back in to the school police headquarters each night.

The most stupid thing I have heard in years.
What exactly is stupid? LAPD has had long guns in their cars FOR YEARS NOW! LAPD, has a job that might put them up against criminals with far greater weapons than an AR15. Unregistered automatic weapons with extended magazines, and possibly a half dozen "home boys" with matching bandanas and various long guns and pistols. Police, and civilians, have a right to protect them selves from these criminals, and frankly, insinuating that rifles in school police offices is stupid, is just ignorant. Pick one. Ok. Then sit back down. Either you have police who are armed and capable of addressing an active shooter scenario, or they are hamstrung by your lack of firearm education and media-misinformation.
Asking "What if a child gets a hold of them" is ridiculous. First off, the guns are locked in squad cars, or inside a gun safe inside the school police office. You would have to A) time entry into their vehicle or office, B) walk into an empty office or unattended squad car, C) have a way of opening the lock or forcing it open. After all that is said and done, the juvenile would A) Need to know how to operate said long gun (yes I know it's not hard, but apparently mass shooters, or children in this case, have trouble with reloading, immediate and remedial actions). B) Approach the target rich environment (Lunch hall, yard, quad) C) Select targets and begin opening fire. Police are trained in these scenarios known as "Active Shooter Scenarios." Each one of these steps would require vast amounts of time, energy, and probability. It would be more likely to say a child or external threat would bring a gun to school and open fire than to even suggest that a child in a school would some how get hold of these weapons. This is like saying "What if cops have guns, and someone steals it out of their holster?" This again is not impossible, but it is a risk that not only we as citizens should be accepting of, but one that police are confident they can prevent. I wont go into retention on holster, but lets just say they are NO WHERE NEAR as secure as these rifles. Thats not to say that it's entirely impossible because, anything is possible, but if a student where to even consider doing such a thing, the greatest part about this plan is that the student would be met with EQUAL OR GREATER RESISTANCE. Preventing a mass shooting or unnecessary harm to fellow students. The idea here, which you seem to think is stupid, is actually quite sound. Your argument against this is clearly based on lack of experience and basic firearm knowledge. I suggest you take a trip to a shooting range and possibly a long gun safety course. So you can familiarize yourself with the topic at hand. Guns are not scary, out of control people with guns are. I would rather my child have a line of defense that is on even or higher ground than would be school shooters. Seeing how they are defenseless in these so called "gun free zones" - Their only defense is a well armed police officer or security guard. I make no assumptions regarding their training, and would hope that all officers are trained in the proper, safe, and sane use of firearms.
Cant be the stupidest thing you heard in years because Obama spoke the other day.
Makes perfect sense. I just can't believe I saw in on NBC. If a monster comes in your kids school would you rather have a cop with a rifle or a teacher with a chalk board that says "gun free zone"? You can deny reality all you want, but it's the "new normal".
No, bandjammer, the stupidest thing you've heard in years is putting signs out in front of a school saying "come on in, murderers, we're defenseless".
The only stupid thing about this is that sheet metal locker they keep the guns "locked" up in.
Agreed. I noticed that as well. Increasing the storage device integrity would be a better idea. Asid from that, the amount of things that would have to go wrong, simultaneously, is beyond some 14yr olds comprehension. Smoking pot behind the handball courts was hard enough, I can't imagine how INSANE and determined a child would have to be to even remotely consider A) approaching an officers vehicle, B) stealing something out of it C) using it to harm other children. The probability of being caught, or meeting armed resistance (stopped by police) is so high it would be suicide by cop.
Lock downs and having trained, armed school police is a good thing. My children need defended and protected when I'm not around. As a parent I would gladly pay extra taxes to have as much protection for my children as I can get. My home is well defended my kids' school should be too.
Taking guns away from the American people is a mistake. Please don't let emotion cloud good judgement.
Great post
I think I speak for the silent majority when saying all of us just want to be left alone by this government and it's leftist fanatics that wish to push their lifestyles, belief systems, ideals and agenda's on everyone around them and in their path.
They aren't happy with just keeping things to themselves. No, your not allowed to believe in God. Your not allowed to have a different thought from theirs. Your not allowed to disagree with them. No, they have to change everyone's life to match theirs. They have to save you from yourself and their idea of justice is by profit.
While at the same time exerting their control over our lives, they then wag their firearms about and tell us we have no need of such firearms or any other means to resist their oppression and subversion of our liberties.
guns in schools is the NRA talking. Stupid people bringing security guards with guns into a school atmosphere. The schools need to be designed in a manner in which the school is ring around the outside ball fields, track. the only way in is through the front doors. Security camera's showing who enters and who leaves. while school is in session, the front doors are locked and the visiting person must be let in through a call bell system. Busing the students can be accomplished by a circular bus zone out front of the school.
Excuse me but did they say this came from California wow people we need to sit up and listen. Our schools need gaurding more than anybody. With the media making such a big production out of these stories people are going to be out for there 15 minutes anyway they can. Funny thing is I went thru a well known shooting school and one of our task was clearing a school of bad guys.
If we get to the point where every school has armed gaurds with ski masks, body scanners and cameras I think I will consider moving to Canada. This is NOT the united states i grew up in and this is NOT the type of environment i would want my kids growing up in.
