President Barack Obama shoots clay targets on the range at Camp David, Md., on Aug. 4, 2012, in this official White House photo released on Feb. 1, 2013.

White House releases photo of Obama firing gun

In an apparent effort to back up President Obama's claims in a recent interview that he enjoys skeet shooting at Camp David, the White House released this photo of Obama using a gun at the presidential retreat in August.

So, its alright for him to use fire arms but the average law-abiding american's would be turned into criminals for assault style weapons and guns with more then 7 rounds each?

How many rounds does he use in that, I wonder...

The slant in your post makes it appear as though you're a staunch gun supporter...however, your lack of knowledge with what is plainly an over/under shotgun (not a rifle like the uninformed NBC caption writer listed it), reveals you know little about firearms. An over/under shotgun holds 2 rounds.

Midwesterner .....an over and under does not necessarily hold two shotgun rounds, it can be a shotgun on the top and a rifle on the bottom, so you "aint" so smart either are you ....

it looks like an over under two shell shotgun, many pump and semi-automatic shotguns can hold 5 shells.

in our state you are limited to three shells when hunting. As a gun owner and former hunter and a US Army vet you proudly carried an M16 , I can see no good reason that people need to have assault rifles capable of killing everyone in their neighborhood, movie theater, university, school etc. I ask, do you love your children or your assault rifle more ?

Great article in Rolling Stone about the NRA, leading off with descriptions of LaPierre's complete incompetence with a gun when someone thought it would be good PR to show him at the range. Apparently that idea was rethought after he turned around and pointed his loaded weapon right at a cameraman when he was distracted.

I've never been part of the Tea Party, nor do I know anyone who has. But I don't share your paranoia of them or your ignorance of what they stand for. Sounds like your knowledge of the news only comes from MSNBC. You know, those guys that edit there news stories to slant them to mean something that has nothing to do with the facts. I've often thought our President had never held a gun in his hand based on his upbringing. Or is he just trying the Putin thing where he's made to look like a manly man? How about giving us a shot of him with his shirt off and skinning a deer or an elk MSNBC?

So he likes the Rich folks sport of shooting? Nice over/under. Probably from the looks it's at least three times more expensive than most AR 15 type assault rifles. That shotgun is definitely not a commoners firearm. Maybe that's his approach. Only the very wealthy should be allowed to use firearms for sporting purposes.

I have to laugh. The compensator on that over/under must really take the kick out of the recoil. He needs to shoot old school and get the full understanding of the techniques required to become competent at the sport of skeet or trap shooting. Still a very nice shotgun. Wonder what his final score was?

Looks like a photo op shooting blanks. Although the compensator will limit muzzle rise (and you see the muzzle has not risen at all) it will not stop the push-back. So you should see some evidence of the kick in his stance and particularly in his upper body and shoulder. I don't see any push-back. So, it was a staged photo op, shooting on a level, not at targets, using blanks. I'm not impressed. Let's see a video clip showing him and the target at the same time. If he actually did do some real shooting he might develop a better appreciation for the hired guns that surround him.

Good one, Mr President. I have read all the @!$%# above and had a laugh. He gets my vote on this one.

When he goes into battle with the Anti Anti Aunties at least he has been there done that.

Yes he is using an under&over 12 gauge. If he is shooting clays, he is 100% in the right stance when he calls PULL, and follows the bird up till it is well above ground.

OK he is not holding it 100%, but he will learn as he goes along.

You wakos who have weapons such as AR-15 (M-16) are complete lunatics who go out in the desert or country side and pull off around 200 rounds in the air and go home feeling done, are not really normal in the head. Rather than have then taken off you, just turn them in so they can be destroyed as they have no place in a real NRA sporting shooters cupboard. By doing this you will not be fighting the 5th Amendment, or lose your right to bear arms. Give the President a break and get him off the hook on this one. He is being hammered by you guys and hammered by his mob in congress. A lot of nuts from both sides holding a gun to the President head is nothing short of STUPID.

Your right to bare arms is a sacred thing that needs protection, but not to own bazookas, missiles, high powered military weapons that are only used at close range to kill people. WAKE UP AMERICA.

Just some minor flaws in your reasoning.

1.) if he is following the clay up why is he firing parallel to the ground? Photo-op, and he is very uncomfortable.

2.) It is illegal for a private citizen to own or have in their possession an M-16 or any other military assault firearm without a permit from the Treasury Dept. (now the ATF), has been since the 1930s. Nor is it possible at all to own bazookas, missiles, high OR low powered military weapons under any circumstances...... so your fears are baseless and reflect poorly on your credibility.

3.) What bearing would the 5th amendment have in your argument?

4.) Why would you bring up NRA match shooting? I doubt that 5% of citizens possessing any firearm is a member of any firearms related organization. I have been around rifles and pistols all my life in rural, suburban and inner city environments all my life, had members of mt family in the U.S. shooting team and club in St. Louis but never ran into an average firearm owner that was interested in competition or felt the desire myself.

5.) Kind of presumptuous on your part to assert what another citizen considers recreation is "crazy dont you think? I enjoy hang-gliding, ultra-lights and sky-diving among other activities and to those who fear heights that is "crazy". Personally I do not see the attraction of cow pasture pool (golf) or jogging on the side of a road for miles, but to each his own.

6.) This clown in office has never held a real job in his life, his academic and political career is one of mediocrity and by way of affirmative action quota system alone. His party has a few legitimate points but taken as a whole is an agenda that is destroying the economy and creating slaves to the welfare state .... of COURSE responsible citizens are required to hold fast and prevent as much of the lunatic parts of that agenda, its their job as representatives of the American citizen to prevent long-term damage to the Republic. Kind of late though, the welfare state agenda has created a situation where it is a debt limit crisis every time the interest payment on yesterdays loan has to be paid. If every penny of the so-called tax victory is used exclusively to pay down the deficit in a little over 500 years it will be paid off!!! Think that is likely? Your great grandchildren will be still be paying for the welfare costs of today, how do you think they will feel about that?

I haventowned a firearm in years, my decision...... but seeing as how the founding fathers thought it was important enough that it ranks second only to freedom of speech and separation of church and state I do not support grandstanding gestures of politicians that accomplish nothing constructive but appease the unwashed mob mentality. The assault weapon law of 1930s, common sense. possession of explosives laws, common sense. Local registration of firearms, debatable but for the most part harmless. New laws that accomplish nothing? Existing laws dont address the problem, why do you think more that only effect citizens that are not any part of the real problem will do anything constructive.

I could play the "progressive" game of buzzwords, insults and misdirection and parroting indoctrination rhetoric.... but that is childish, displays ignorance and lack of thinking for ones-self.

This photograph is just more propaganda from the Ministry of Truth. President Obama does not, and has never supported the 2nd amendment. The shotgun is level, not held properly, probably has a blank in it (too much smoke), and one tries never to shoot skeet that far down on the horizon, but on the fly, away and up from the shooter. It is nothing more than a posed shot to suggest the president is friendly to guns and gun owners, he is not, and never has been. He is also against civilian carry. Only military, police and his security detail of secret service are able to bear powerful semi-automatic and automatic firearms. Oh yes, and the 6-8 armed personnel that circumnavigate his two daughters' schools. I guess the D.C. schools are just too dangerous. Maybe they should hire more armed guards, as suggested by the NRA. I forgot, the NRA is the enemy of the state, and anything they suggest could not possibly be smart, effective or a valid choice for the other 2/3 of the public schools who do not have armed guards on campus. This staged photo is nothing more than feeble attempts to convince low information voters that he too uses guns, and the low information voters then assume he supports the 2nd amendment. He clear does not, and never has.

When his Secretary to the aide of the vice-president of public relations suggested the "skeet" photo-op shoot he explained it was a sport where you "shoot" the "bird" after it was released from the "trap". Of course being an intelligent progressive member of the left agenda he refused to participate in anything that causes harm to the poor "pigeon". As a compromise he would only agree to use blanks and only if he did not have to aim at the "bird".

If he is shooting trap he has let the bird get too far from the trap house. If he is shooting skeet at the 3rd position he is just about right and if he is shooting 5 stand or sporting clays at the jack-rabbit throw he looks a little high.

I think it was a photo op to capture the smoke and shot stream from the gun. I promise...this was the best of several attempts to compose the photo.

From a shot gunner and amateur photographer.
