At least 18 people were killed in a stampede in the Indian city of Allahabad on Sunday as Hindus returned from a river dip at the world's largest religious festival.
An overcrowded railway station footbridge buckled and a railing collapsed, sending some people slipping down the stairs and triggering the stampede, a top state government official told Reuters, not wishing to be quoted by name.

On Feb 10 , 2013 , 22 people died on Allahabad Railway Station platform # 6 , where some 200,000 persons were jostling with each other to get into a train
As usual , there were no preventive-type of precautions nor any , on-the-spot , post-mishap medical help
And equally usually , expect some Minister to announce a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each, to the next of kin
If the Minister is imaginative ( and conscious of the forthcoming 2014 National Elections ) , he may even visit the bereaved families and console them by saying,
“ Do not grieve ! Having washed away their sins by taking a holy dip at the Mahakumbh Mela , your beloveds are entitled to a direct entry to heaven – where we have arranged a special quota for Kumbh-pilgrims
What’s more , we have made similar arrangements for all pilgrims visiting any holy place , anywhere in our Motherland ! “
