Thousands of devotees thronged the Hazratbal shrine during Mehraj-u-Alam, believed to mark the ascension of Prophet Mohammed to Heaven. Many Muslims converge annually for celebrations at the shrine on the outskirts of Srinagar, India, near the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
