Filipino Ruel Emir cries as he is being given free a circumcision during a military medical mission as part of community service at a slum in Tondo, Manila on March 31. The military has been criticized for deploying troops in urban poor communities in Manila allegedly to harrass left-wing activists.

Its difficult to know what their intentions are, but theyve absolutely succeeded in terrifying a child, and theyve probably made an enemy of him for the rest of his life.

Women observe an ambiguous drawing by Seattle, WA artist Dominic Rouse in which a woman's lower body or a wine glass stemming into a torso can be seen.

This image became very controversial while editing a slide show from our coverage of the 2007 Seattle Erotic Art Festival. Many editors felt that this work belonged in an appropriate representation of the festival, where some works are explicit while others, such as this, are more subtle and are more than what you might see at first glance. Blatant at first, upon closer inspection the torso is stemming out of a wine or martini glass - which adds an interesting element. But for some, there's no seeing past the idea that it's just a reproduction of a woman's nethers. What do you think? Should it have been included in the slideshow? Staff members at Safaripark Beekse Bergen attempt to artificially inseminate a white rhinoceros on March 29. If it works it might mean the saving of the threatened northern white rhino, the world's most endamgered large mammal.

Help Wanted: Rhinoceros Inseminator must provide your own helmet and a big plastic suit.

Queen Elizabeth II takes shelter from the rain at the official opening of the Lawn Tennis Association's new state of the art training facility in Roehampton, England on Thursday, March 29.

Details, Details, Details... I like how put together the Queen is in this picture. It reminds me of how my grandmother and ladies of her generation presented themselves in public. They always looked so buttoned down and classy. It gave them a sense of quiet authority that I NEVER questioned.

Four members of the Guatemala's Police Investigation Unit, accused of the murder of three Salvadorean representatives from the Central American Parliament, are seen while being registered at a court in Guatemala City, Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007. The bodies of the three congressmen were found Feb. 20 on the side of a rural road in Guatemala.

Even though its subjects' faces are largely obscured, this is a remarkably expressive picture. The "por favor" sign's arc and placement over the curved helmet suggest a plea for help in the phone call (real or not), and the idyllic blue sky and palm trees on the laptop contrast with the miserable situation these men face.

epa00966186 Gerhard Knapp from Pforzheim presents his beard at the International German Beard Growing Championships in Schoemberg, Germany, Saturday, 24 March 2007. 200 men took part in different categories.

What a great assignment to go shoot a crazy beard festival. Wish I could have been this photographer.

An entertainer on stilts performs for Israel fans before their Euro 2008 Group E qualifying soccer match against England at Ramat Gan Stadium near Tel Aviv March 24, 2007.

There were several different versiosn of this photo from other photographers at the event and I paused to look at them but passed on them because they were shot with wider angle lenses. But this photographer shot with a long lens and brought me right into the subject. It goes to show you that lens choice can often make or break your images.

A single building stands untouched in the middle of a construction site after the owner rejected the developer's offer, who continued with the scheduled construction around it, in China's southwestern city of Chongqing, Tuesday 13 March 2007. China's parliament overwhelmingly approved a landmark property law Friday 16 March 2007, which stipulates that 'the property of the state, the collective, the individual and other obliges is protected by law, and no units or individuals may infringe upon it.'

An extreme example of "standing your ground." Would you go this far to protect your property?

Afghan women walk in front of the shrine of Hazrat-i-Ali in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, north of Kabul, 02 March 2007. Since the fall of the Taliban in late 2001, many would agree that the political and cultural position of Afghan women has improved substantially but despite all these changes many challenges still remain.

Sometimes a scan through our photo database feels like a quick journey around the world. This picture conjured up that feeling, giving me a chance to marvel at the artistry of this shrine half a world away. For you folks with big monitors, maximize your photoblog window so you can see the picture big enough to check out the details in the tile.

A family prepare their meal 07 March 2007 inside their shack in a shanty town in Nouakchott's El-Mina quarter, which is mainly inhabited by the descendants of ancient slaves. Messaoud Ould Boulkheir will be the first 'Haratin' or descendant of slaves to run for president in Mauritania in the upcoming elections which start on March 11.

I'm attracted to the layers of patterns in this glimpse of home life in Mauritania.

Legendary escape artist Harry Houdini is shown in chains in this photo circa 1899.

Eighty one years after Houdini died his great-nephew wants to exhume his body to determine how he really died. Do you think he'll be in there?

Naomi Campbell leaves the NYC Sanitation Dept. Depot on March 22, after the fourth day of her week-long court-ordered community service. Campbell pleaded guilty in Jan. to hitting her housekeeper with a cell phone after Campbell couldn't find a pair of her jeans.

At some point this morning Naomi Campbell was getting ready for her day, and something like this idea must have run through her head Hmm, Ive got that community service thing at the sanitation department again today, what should I wear? Wait a minute THIS fur coat is fabulous!

A Palestinian boy eats ice cream next to a masked Islamic Jihad militant standing guard next to the house used by Hamas during recent clashes between Fatah and Hamas, in Beit Lahiya northern Gaza Strip, Thursday, March 22, 2007.

This photo really struck a nerve. This boy stands next to a heavily armed masked militant and eats his ice cream cone like it's nothing. Children shouldn't be subjected to war.

Demonstrators from the opposition Conservative party wear masks of Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown to protest against "stealth taxes" outside of the Houses of Parliament in London on March 21.

Covering protest usually gets me down. You get the feeling that everything is done just for the camera and that is boring. However, sometimes a group of protesters can get creative, and thats when it becomes a visual treat.

Skulls are positioned at a village cemetery in Kuban, Indonesia on March 21. The people of this region lay their dead out in bamboo cages to decompose. It is one of the original Balinese customs that the "Bali Aga" or original Balinese have maintained.

I like what Dimas Ardian did with lens choice, camera angle and exposure in this picture. It is a stark, but also respectful representation of another cultures burial custom. It informs and engages the viewer without being judgmental or sensational.

Iraqi Kurds light torches on March 21 in celebration of the Kurdish new year in the town of Akri, 500 km north of Baghdad.

Safin Hameds beautiful picture of the Kurdish new year celebration is all about color and mood. Im glad he left the strobe in his camera bag. Artificial light would have ruined all that is right about this picture.

The eye of a hippo is seen at the season opening of the ZOOM Erlebniswelt adventure park in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on March 21.

Isolating elements of a subject can be a good photographic tactic. Hippos have always looked like creatures from another time to me. Photojournalist Martin Meissners close study of this hippos eye illustrates that idea very well.

A farmer waits for rain on his drought hit paddy field in Morigoan, India. The country's flood-prone northeast state is suffering an unusual dry spell that has hit farmers who depend on seasonal monsoon rains to sow rice and other crops.

Talk about a tough row to hoe Some of my in-laws are farmers, and they are very connected to their local weather patterns. It directly impacts their livelihood. I cant imagine what this farmer is going through.

Coach Joachim Loew looks on during the German National Football team press conference at DFB headquarters on March 21 in Frankfurt, Germany. The German team will face Czech Republic in the European Championship qualifying match in Prague.

Making news pictures at press conferences can be a horrible thing. Access is controlled. Movement is limited. You have very little control over the lighting. That is why Im always impressed when a photographer comes back with an interesting picture.

US soldiers scan rooftops looking for a sniper in Baghdad's Haifa street on March 19. Congress is expected this week to consider budget legislation for the Iraq war that includes a provision requiring a US withdrawal by September 2008.

The United States has been at war for four years. Just about everyone agrees that strategic mistakes were made, and nobody is blaming the troops. I get frustrated as I listen to most of the arguments about the war. So many times it boils down to name calling and over-simplification. Meanwhile, the world becomes a more dangerous place. Lets talk about what America should do now. Please limit comments to your position rather than attacking other views.

An elephant paints a picture at Mae Sa elephant camp in Chiang Mai province, 700 km (435 miles) north of Bangkok, March 13, 2007 to mark Thailand's National Elephant Day. About 70 elephants were given a buffet of fruit and vegetables at the event.

I came across this picture while working on the edit for our weekly Animal Tracks slideshow. I can't say that I have ever seen an elephant paint a picture before and just found this very interesting. While I did not include it in Animal Tracks for this week because there was a better picture of an elephant that I wanted to use, I thought I would share it with everyone.

Lisa Molitor works as a web reporter at the booth of Deutsche Telekom at the CeBIT tech fair in Hanover, Germany on Friday, March 16. She can control the images on small screen and transfer the photos immediately to the company's website.

The day that Im handed one of these and told to go work on a story is the day I make good on the idea of opening a little custom furniture woodshop. I just dont need this level of technological pervasiveness. Am I the only one who finds consumer electronics to be mostly disappointing?

Megan Jump, left, and Jenna Haring, on spring break from Ball State University, use a funnel to drink beer in Miami Beach, Florida on March 14.

Today MSNBC has a story about binge drinking on college campuses getting more intense. The overly protective dad in me keeps saying that I should be worried, but honestly it just makes me miss college. Are you concerned?

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales answers questions during a news conference at the Justice Department on March 13 in Washington, DC. He was responding to criticism over the firings of eight federal prosecutors.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says whether or not he stays in the administration is up to President Bush, but MSNBC.com is interested in your opinion. Do you think he should stay, or is it time for him to go?

Three male moor frogs are seen swimming in a pond in the suburbs of the eastern town of Leipzig, Germany on March 13. The male moor frog turns blue in the spawning season.

Turning blue during mating season... There is a really funny joke in there somewhere.
