Staff photographer Matt McClain waits to turn in his photo equipment in the Rocky Mountain News photo studio on February 27 in Denver, Colo. Friday's edition was the last for the nearly 150-year-old daily, Colorado's oldest newspaper. The owner E.W. Scripps Co. announced Thursday that the paper was closing after efforts to sell the money-losing newspaper failed. McClain was one of about 200 staffers to lose their jobs.

Seeing as how those of you reading this post must consume at least some of your news online, how do you feel about so many of our nation's newspapers being in financial trouble with some even closing up shop?

Job seekers wait in the rain to enter a job fair in Hangzhou, China, Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009. Millions of college graduates face dim prospects for finding jobs this year amid the global economic downturn.

This does not look like a fun scene. Let's hope the job markets and economies around the world see a ray of light soon.

Gold miners form a human chain while digging an open pit at the Chudja mine in the Kilomoto concession near the village of Kobu, 100 km (62 miles) from Bunia in north-eastern Congo, February 23, 2009.

Seeing this, I'm reminded of the film, "Powaqqatsi". Another gold mine, another chain of human beings seemingly becoming part of the earth around them.

Members of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band listen through a door as musician Stevie Wonder performs during a ceremony honoring him for the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize at the White House in Washington, February 25, 2009.

I get the feeling that these two want to get in there and play with Stevie.

Tiger Woods plays his tee shot during practice prior to the start of the Accenture Match Play Championships at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Marana, Arizona.

Professional golf has been in a kind of a funk without its premier player. The Tiger show resumes this week.

Actor Ben Stiller (L) and Natalie Portman present an award on stageduring the 81st Annual Academy Awards held at Kodak Theatre on February 22, 2009 in Los Angeles, California.

I thought this bit was funny at the Academy Awards but - was it appropriate? How many people actually got it?

New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez, left, signs autographs during a spring training baseball workout in Tampa, Fla., Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009.

I find it sad that so many young fans still want Alex Rodriguez's autograph after he admitted to cheating by using steroids.

Soldiers with the U.S Army 1-6 Field Artillery division head towards a village to investigate Taliban activity in the area February 21, 2009 in Nuristan Province, Afghanistan. As the security situation continues to challenge coalition forces, President Obama is sending an additional 17,000 American troops to Afghanistan this spring and summer, adding to the 36,000 Americans currently in Afghanistan.

This picture does a good job of conveying what a rugged region our troops have to cover and how difficult it might be to seek out the enemy among so many cave-riddled peaks and valleys.

Young women stand in a field February 21, 2009 in Mangow, Afghanistan. As the security situation continues to challenge coalition forces, President Obama has announced that he is sending an additional 17,000 American troops to Afghanistan this spring and summer, adding to the 36,000 Americans currently in Afghanistan.

This image struck me becuase of its color. It seems as though most of the images that come out of Afghanistan are shot in areas that are brown, dusty, treeless and relatively uninviting. It's nice to see that there is at least one little corner of the country that looks to be green and peaceful.

An Indian man jumps through a ring of fire as he exhibits his skills during the 74th Kila Raipur rural sports meet, popularly known as Rural Olympics, held in village Kila Raipur, near the northern Indian city of Ludhiana, 13 February 2009.

My favorite parts of this picture are the two men holding the ring, something about their posture - I wonder how many people they held the hoop for that day.

Onlookers stand beside the wreckage of a derailed train near the remote Jajpur Road station, about 120 km (75 miles) east of the eastern Indian city of Bhubaneswar, February 14, 2009. Authorities have ordered a probe into an express train derailment in Orissa that killed 12 people and injured about 150, a senior railway official said on Saturday.

The number of people walking through this disaster scene differs from big emergency scenes I see photographed in Western countries, which are usually roped off and tightly controlled. It lends the scene a kind of everyday quality.

A model looks at herself in a mirror during casting in the design studio of French designer Catherine Malandrino at Fashion Week in New York February 12, 2009.

I'd expect that models (and probably a lot of other people) spend a lot of time living in the illusory world of one's reflection, and what I like about this image is the feeling of trying to connect with that mirror image. Then again, do you think she's posing consciously for this picture?

An apprentice of a bullfighter puts on an Andalusian hat during the opening day of the World Bull Fair in Seville February 19, 2009. The show pays homage to the bulls used in traditional bullfights and the fair will run from February 19 to 22.

Somewhere out in a field, a young bull is sharpening his horns.

A sea gypsy boy paddles his boat through his neighborhood in the Sulawesi Sea in Malaysia's state of Sabah on Borneo February 17, 2009. A community of 30 families of the indigenous ethnic group of sea gypsies are still maintaining a nomadic and sea-based life without fresh water supply, TV nor electricity, and only go to land to bury the dead.

I liked the perspective of this shot. This could have been a scene from "Waterworld". I can't imagine how this little community survives storms.

Snow falls over the Wumen Gate of the Forbidden City at night in Beijing February 17, 2009. China took credit on Tuesday for the first snowfall of the winter in Beijing, saying it fired sticks of chemicals into the sky to seed clouds in a bid to end a persistent drought.

I championed this picture for The Week in Pictures because I liked it's old postcard feel. But other editors didn't like the light, and they thought it was too similar to the long-exposure barn image that we included. Check out our final edit here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3842331

A man walks past a shack in Kibera, one of the world's largest slums, on which photographs by French photographer JR are seen on the rooftops of shacks, on February 16, 2009, near Nairobi. The photographs on the rooftops are of the eyes and faces of the women of Kibera, and most of the women have their own photos on their own rooftop. In Kibera, the material on which the photo is for the first time made of a water resistant material in an effort to protect the fragile houses in the heavy rain season as well as decorate them.

This is probably the most useful art installation I've ever seen. Can you think of other ones that fit this category?

Local villagers holding wooden stools and lanterns perform a dragon dance in Huayuan village of Dongyang, Zhejiang province February 12, 2009. Around 5,000 villagers carrying more than 3,600 wooden stools and lanterns stood in the shape of a dragon more than 5.5 kilometres (3.4 miles) long in hope of rainfall, local media reported. Picture taken February 12, 2009.

We considered this image for The Week in Pictures. But while pretty, its composition didn't direct our eye well enough to include it.

Gary Lockerbie of England walks past kangaroos on the 3rd hole at the 2009 Johnnie Walker classic held at The Vines Resort and Country Club February 19, 2009 in Perth, Australia.

Kangaroo Golf? I've seen birds and alligators on the golf course, but this would be pretty distracting if you're playing in a tournament. They dont seem bothered by the people at all.

People in Victorian costume sit in rowboats as they watch a special Sky screening of the film "Titanic" at Golden Lane swimming pool, Barbican, in London.

Now that is a very cool way to watch "Titanic." I wonder if the rowboats sink at the end of the film.

Members of the Baltimore Orioles head out of a dugout for morning practice during spring training baseball on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Every February I get a little depressed. Winter just wears me down, but then spring training comes around and reminds me that life can be good again. PLAY BALL!

A worker loads bricks onto his head on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bengladesh. About 45 workers are employed at the factory and most work 12 hours a day. The daily wage is 120 taka ($1.70) for men and 100 taka ($1.40) for women.

My neck hurts just looking at this picture. It's hard for me to understand how they can carry these kinds of loads on their heads without injury. And for 14 cents an hour . . .

A computer-generated artist's impression released by the European Space Agency (ESA) depicts an approximation of 12,000 objects in orbit around the Earth. A communications satellite belonging to US company Iridium collided with a defunct Russian military satellite on February 12, 2009.

This photo illustration of 12,000 space objects is a stunner. I keep looking for Waldo. To see this image in HD View, go here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29161671

The morning sun slices throught the columns at the Lincoln Memorial early on Feb. 12 in Washington, DC. The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission hosted ceremonies in honor of the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth.

Happy birthday President Lincoln. Nice picture Karen Bleier.

Hail pours out from a home down-spout during a server storm which later produced a tornado which knocked down power lines, damaged homes and businesses Tuesday afternoon, Feb.10, 2009, in Edmond, Okla.

I've never seen hail larger than a pea before. This is crazy! Looks like there's an ice maker hooked up to his house. Any photobloggers out there who've experienced this before?
