Displaced boys inflate their shalwar kamis pants to float with them in a canal at the Chota Lahore refugee camp, at Swabi, in northwest Pakistan, Saturday, May 30, 2009.

I think every little kiddo manages to find some way to inflate his or her garments when swimming is involved.

Eating champion Takeru Kobayashi wins the P'Zone Chow-lenge against Joey Chestnut on May 30, 2009 in Culver City, California.

I think that Joey Chestnut and a Kodiak bear are the only two that have beaten this guy in the past, which seems like quite a feat, but, really, I wonder how many competitive eaters are out there on the circuit?

Hungarian Air Force Grippen fighter jet flies in formation with a Russian-made Lisunov Li-2 aircraft (top) during an airshow in Szolnok 89km ( 55 miles) east from Budapest May 30, 2009.

This definitely made me do a double take.

A US soldier, left, watches Iraqi soldiers preparing to fire a 60mm mortar during a live fire military exercise with the participation of the US Army in the outskirts of Baghdad in May.

Three years ago, the U.S. thinned out its presence in Baghdad and Iraqi forces could not prevent sectarian fighting. By the end of June, Iraq's forces will again be in control and many Iraqis wonder if they are up to the task. Will the U.S. find itself doing another surge in a year or two?

A general view of a permanent lava lake in the crater of Mount Nyiragongo, a volcano 16 miles from Goma on April 29. The Rwanda Red Cross on May 26, 2009 updated the risk-reduction plan for the communities that lie in the shadow of the volcano amid signs that it is showing increased activity again. Nyiragongo erupted in 2002, sending a river of lava through the city, destroying thousands of homes and killing dozens of people.

People in the Eastern Congo have suffered terribly from war in the last decade, and they also have this active volcano to worry about.

French actress and president of the jury Isabelle Huppert arrives for the Closing Ceremony at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival on May 24, 2009 in Cannes, southern France.

This is such a well-handled photograph. I love that the photographer saw something different and went for it. I like the perfect symmetry and balance and the rich, saturated red.

Spanish bullfighter Javier Valverde is gored by his second bull during his bullfight at Las Ventas bullring as part of San Isidro's Fair, in Madrid, central Spain, 24 May 2009.

I'm not a fan of bullfighting, but I'm fascinated by it. What's interesting to me about this shot is that it's the second bull the bullfighter faught that day. Do you think the bull watched the first "fight"? I wonder what happened after this.

Helio Castroneves, driver of the #3 Team Penske Dallara Honda, jumps onto the hood of the pace car after winning the Indianapolis 500 on May 24, 2009 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Indiana.

At first glance, this looks like someone getting hit by a car. I wonder how Chevrolet feels about Castroneves getting so up-close and personal with their car in front of such a large audience.

In this Oct. 4, 2005 file photo, a boat tries to make its way through a section of the Amazon River suffering from low water levels in northern Brazil. In 2005, the Amazon dropped by several feet because of drought, halting travel and harming the important fishing industry. In 2009, communities along the river are adding new floors to their stilt houses, trying to stay above rising floodwaters that have killed 44 people and left 376,000 homeless.

I thought of two things when I saw this picture: nice texture, and it's amazing how much things can change.

Pedestrians walk on a closed sections of Broadway and 7th Avenue in New York City on May 24, 2009. Starting today, a five block section of Broadway in Times Square and a smaller section in Herald Square will be closed to vehicular traffic for use as a pedestrian promenades.

I think this picture does a good job of capturing the chaos of Manhattan. Funny that the promenades are meant to create a less chaotic situation though.

Cody Olesen hula hoops during the 2009 Northwest Folklife Festival on Friday, May 22, 2009 in Seattle. The festival began on Friday and runs through the Memorial Day weekend ending on Monday.

U.S. Navy sailors walk past the USS Iwo Jima docked on the Hudson River during Fleet Week on May 22 in New York City. Fleet Week, which annually brings an array of warships to New York City's harbors on Memorial Day weekend, is being celebrated this year with the smallest flotilla of ships since the event began 22 years ago.

I really enjoy Mario Tama's use of scale in this picture.

Unionized workers Thursday went on a general strike.

Auto workers everywhere in the world are taking to the streets. These South Korean workers are "mad as hell" and they're not going to take it anymore. The color and the telephoto perspective really make this photo work.

A windsurfer sails at Witsand, Cape Town, South Africa May 22, 2009. The onset of winter in the southern hemisphere brings regular cold fronts past the Cape providing good conditions for the sport.

Nic Bothma is always amazing me with his images of surfing and water sports. He does it again with a remote camera combined with a slow shutter speed.

The arm of the Statue of Liberty and part of her crown are seen through a window inside the crown, Wednesday, May 20, 2009 in New York. The Statue of Liberty's crown, with its exhilarating view of New York's skyscrapers, bridges and seaport, is reopening on Independence Day for the first time since terrorists leveled the World Trade Center just across the harbor.

When I saw this image, I remembered that Rich Shulman had just blogged a photo showing the inside of the Statue of Liberty - so here's a view looking out the window.
