Vice President Dick Cheney speaks during a rallly at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., Friday, Oct. 27, 2006.

I was really surprised when I saw this picture. The GOP is usually very good about creating political visuals. I wonder what they were thinking when they thought, "Let's have Cheney stand in front of a big WHITEMAN sign."

A Somali woman rolls her water can as she goes to fetch water at Dadaab refugee camp in Northern Kenya Monday, Aug. 7 2006. For the Somali refugees who have been in Dadaab longest, the recent takeover of much of southern Somalia by an Islamic militia has sapped any lingering hope they had of going home.

So many elements in this image by Karel Prinsloo convey a feeling of desolation. But while some viewers may see that, was she feeling it? So often with photojournalism, how the viewer reacts to the image may not reflect the real mood of the situation.

Left: Members of carnival brass band "Bellalp Hexe" play music instruments while paragliding, during a world record attempt in Fiesch, southwestern Switzerland, Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006. The aim was to get as many musicians as possible in the air simultanously, piloted by experienced tandem paragliding pilots. Right: A member of carnival brass band "Bellalp Hexe" plays the trombone while paragliding.

While this was an interesting event, the images are a little disappointing, perhaps because of its difficult-to-reach location. All of the images I saw were either from too long a distance to see the individual instruments, or too close which makes you lose the loftiness of the event.

A Tibetan woman is seen outside the Lamaozhou temple to attend the annual lection debate ceremony in Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, northwestern China's Qinghai province September 13, 2006.

This woman's face draws me into this photo. Her expression and face pierces something in me and makes me want to know more about this woman.

A visitor touches 'Purple Haze 2' at the revolutionary art exhibition Sense & Sensuality 2006 in the Bankside Gallery in London, England. The exhibition encourages visitors to get hands-on with all the works of art on display. The artists are exploring not only the visual but all of the senses.

Sometimes the art world intrigues and even mystifies me, but other times I have to say that I just don't get it. Aren't there other things we could be spending creative energy on? For example, why are all hybrid cars ugly? Couldn't we solve that before we touch purple things at art exhibits?

The Tribute in Light near the World Trade Center site is seen from the Empire State Building September 11, 2006 in New York City. Monday was the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Beginning is hard. I've been reluctant to begin blogging, but then I saw Mario's picture and my reluctance just fell away. I've looked at a lot of 9/11 anniversary pics. Many of them are good, but this is one of the few that hints at the scale. It suggests what this might mean in the long run.

Dry and cracked mud is seen near a site where foul-smelling mud has been flowing from an oil and gas exploration well operated by local company PT Lapindo Brantas in Sidoarjo, East Java Sept. 12, 2006. The Village chief is hoping to save the Indonesian hamlet of Kedungbendo from a torrent of mud flowing unchecked from an exploratory oil well.

I never thought that dirt could make for such an interesting photo but this photo changed my mind. It has a great visual appeal and the cracks draw the eye through the photo to the village in the background.

In this handout photo provided by NASA, Astronaut Joseph R. Tanner works along the International Space Station's hardware September 12.

Space, the final frontier... This photo of an astronaut fixing the space station looks so serene. There will soon be sub-orbital flights taking the general public to (the edge of) space, it's just a matter of time before we can take a trip to the Moon.

A model displays a creation by Japanese designer Kazuo Takashima during the 2007 Spring & Summer Tokyo Collection in Tokyo Thursday, Sept. 7. The show was held as part of the Japan Fashion Week events.

Israeli gunners cover their ears as an artillery piece fires into southern Lebanon from a position in northern Israel, Friday, July 14, 2006. Hezbollah guerrillas have rockets that can reach over 43 miles, Israel's army chief said Friday, a dire warning that more Israeli cities could be subject to attacks.

Beautiful image, but Im compelled because while Israelis are pictured, this doesnt say good, evil, pro, con. This was the beginning of an interesting time as an editor where it was difficult to choose an image without being seen as biased by supporters of either side. While people looked at our edit and said thats "for" or "against," all I could see was "war".

A man holds his kite, which is painted in the colours of Iran's national flag, during a kite festival in Tehran September 7, 2006.

I was drawn to this image at first because of the lighting in the image. After taking a closer look I liked the fact that there was this image that had a peaceful feel to it despite the fact that the nation is surrounded in controversy right now.

Eerily lit clouds hover over Scoular Elevator Co. east of Salina, Kan., on a blustery May 16, 2002, as a storm front whipped up funnel clouds in the area.

I have loved this picture ever since I laid eyes on it. The graphic quality of the image is what drew me in, but on a personal level, it reminded me of nights spent watching wicked lightning and listening to deafening thunder in my grandmothers Kansas home after a day of visiting with her over some homemade goodie in her always welcoming kitchen.

As volcanic gases billow from the bottom, scavengers wait to catch money offering made by a Hindu worshipper inside the crater of Mount Bromo in Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia, Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006.

I'm drawn to this image and the woman's offering to the volcano. I find myself rooting for the gift to make it past the scavengers and into the fumes. I imagine it's how I would feel if there were someone waiting at the bottom of a wishing well, ready to steal my penny before my wish could come true.

Michael Jackson performs with children at the World Music Awards, in London, England on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

Michael just doesn't get it, and I guess a few of his fans don't either. I count myself among his older fans. I still have his 'Off the Wall' and 'Thriller' albums, but at some point he just drove the Michael Jackson bus into the ditch. I can't imagine him ever getting it back on the road. It's starting to feel like the last days of Elvis.

Heroin addicts smoke heroin in Kabul in this November 15, 2006 picture. French NGO Medecins du Monde is taking part in a care and prevention program for drug addicts in Afghanistan.

MSNBC picture editors talk a lot about what makes a great news picture. We obviously have very diverse opinions, but there are some things that seem to ring true for most of us. Good composition helps. Interesting light is always a huge plus. Good access to the subject is paramount, but for me most of all there needs to be a good moment. That is the essence of an engaging still photograph.

A child paints a flower on the world longest painting ever made by children, a Guinness Book record, in Bucharest, Romania on November 18, 2006.

Some pictures give me hope. There are a lot worse things a kid could be doing than adding to the world's largest painting done by children.

White Belugas whales wear Christmas hats during a show at Hakkeijima Sea Paradise Aquarium on November 18, 2006 in Yokohama, Japan. The Christmas event has started at the aquarium and will run until December 25.

There are moments when I'm pretty sure that if there really is a right and wrong, if there really is some cosmic power that keeps track of everything then I'm pretty sure we're all going to hell. First we hunt the whales to near extinction, and then we take the remaining few, put them on display and make them wear Santa hats. Shame on us.

Fans observe a moment of silence in honor of the lives lost on September 11th, 2001, before the NFL game between the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers at McAfee Coliseum on September 11th, 2006 in Oakland, California.

The deadpan mask is absurd in the context of a somber moment of silence.

US soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, cajole an Afghan donkey to carry supplies to their mountaintop post in south Afghanistan,Thursday, June 22, 2006. U.S. troops had to carry food and water, dropped by plane from the valley floor to the ridge top as part of operations in support of Operation Mountain Thrust. (AP Photo/Rodrigo Abd)

If it were a savage kick, it would destroy the humor that underscores the irony of a modern military using a donkey. The distant bucket brigade reinforces the idea.

A worker preparing for Fashion Week in New York balances a board as he walks down the runway in one of the tents where designers will show their new spring/summer lines in New York's Byant Park the day before the shows kick off, Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006. Fashion Week runs from Sept. 8-15.

I love how all the lines in this picture lead to the doorway with the light pouring through. It looks as though the man carrying the plywood is going to cover the doorway.

What a bummer. After editing pictures all week for our Fashion Week slideshows, I got used to seeing the models as superhuman with their perfect posture, perfect looks, and grace. This picture really humanizes them. I wonder how damaging this can be to a models career.

Chinese security guards from the Anhui Huaibei Mining Corp. compete in a skills competition held in Huaibei, eastern China's Anhui province Tuesday Sept. 12, 2006. Around 100 security guards from a team of 1,200 guards at the company took part in the competition.

It looks to me like theyre freefalling during a skydive, but they're only a couple feet above the ground. I'm curious what they're doing that got them in this position in the air for a brief moment.

A Harvard MK IV piloted by Jim Booth rounds a pylon during the Reno National Championship Air Races at Reno Stead Airport just north of Reno, Nev., Friday, Sept. 15, 2006.

I love this picture, by Scott Sady of the Reno Gazette-Journal. It looks fake, like a plastic model hanging against a poster of the sky. That plane is beautiful.

Tai, an Indian female elephant stands in the middle of a couple's home in a performance art piece by English artist Banksy, Sept. 15, 2006, in a downtown Los Angeles warehouse. The Banksy exhibition, called Barely Legal, is billed as a "three day vandalized warehouse extravaganza" on Hunter St. in Los Angeles. It features a live elephant which has been painted in a floral wallpaper pattern.

This is the elephant in the livingroom. When I first saw this image, I thought the elephant was a sculpture. It's not. I wish we could show you this picture really, really big. It gets better with size.

    U. S. Congresswoman Katherine Harris, R-Florida, holds up a possum she purchased at the Wausau Possum Festival, Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, in Wausau, Fla. Harris is a candidate for the U. S. Senate.

Ms. Harris won the GOP nomination for the Senate election in Florida, so I was searching for a photo that documented her victory when I came upon this one. I wonder what became of the possum.
