Spider Pig, a character from the Simpsons Movie, floats above the Battersea Power Station in London on Dec.11 to promote the Simpsons Movie DVD, and echoing Pink Floyds 1976 Animal album cover.

An inflatable pig, an iconic building, and the Simpsons, what more could you want? I love the composition of this photo with the street mural in the foreground, it almost has the illusion of a Photoshop composite.

Anne-Sophie Barthet of France crashes and injures her right leg during the Women's FIS Alpine World Cup Downhill on Ruthie's Run on December 8, 2007 in Aspen, Colorado.

She is definitely having a bad day at the office. It reminds me of those great "agony of defeat" clips from the old Wide World of Sports.

Animal rights activists imprison themselves in cages during a rally two days ahead of International Animal Rights Day in downtown Madrid December 8, 2007.

We see animal rights photos all the time, the blood soaked fur coats, the naked models with leaves covering private parts...but this photo really stood out for me. I love the overall composition of this photo, especially the hand gripping the cage. I have to wonder though, if all this will really bring about animal liberation.

Lois Deininger of San Francisco watches her father, Pearl Harbor survivor Edward Gaulrapp of Freeport Illinois, salute during the commemoration marking the 66th anniversary of Pearl Harbor attack December 7, 2007 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Photographers shoot a lot of commemoration ceremonies. This one really works because all the little details are just right: the salute, the oxygen tube, the lei and the daughter's emotion.

Children play in a mustard field at Mohini village, about 190 km (118 miles) south of the northeastern Indian city of Siliguri, December 6, 2007.

Tis good to be a kid! While I can't run through a field, I'll be running to my local pub now. I guess it's good to be a big kid too.

Rolf, a 48-years old computer specialist, presents 126 face piercings during his visit to the 17th International Tattoo Convention in Berlin December 7, 2007.

I know I cringed when I got my ears pierced, imagine getting 126 facial piercings? I wonder if it hurt?

A villager ploughs a field as the launch pad housing China's first lunar orbiter, the Chang'e I, is seen at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Xichang, in southwest China's Sichuan province Sunday, Oct. 21 2007. The probe entered lunar orbit on Nov. 5.

Here are old and new technologies side by side.

A handout photograph from the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) made available on 21 November 2007 shows female Israeli combat soldiers as they put mud on each other's faces during a training exercise.

Do you think this image is glamourous? (glamour defined by m-w.com: an exciting and often illusory and romantic attractiveness)

Patients have lunch in the Kunming Mental Hospital on December 1, 2007, Yunnan Province, southwest China. According to Chinese government statistics, more than five percent of the population are suffering from varying degrees of psychiatric disturbance.

It's not a surprise that people in this mental hospital are living in their own little worlds. I'm struck by their body language and the complete lack of interaction. I guess they are better off than many of the mentally ill homeless folks living on the streets.

Pregnant women cast their ballot papers in a maternity hospital in the western Siberian city of Kemerovo, December 2, 2007. Parliamentary elections began Sunday in Russia with 107 million people called to elect 450 members to the Duma.

Today I saw pictures of election workers bringing ballot boxes to homes in remote villages and maternity hospitals in Russia. Certainly makes one wonder if this is about making sure everyone has a chance to vote. In any case, this is a pretty funny picture. I wonder if they are voting for two.

Russian President Vladimir Putin visits a Moscow restaurant after voting December 2, 2007. Russian people today vote to elect the fifth Russian State Duma, the lower house of parliament.

Reality check: does the President of Russia really serve himself at the salad bar of a Moscow restaurant? Could you imagine President Bush being photographed doing this?
